On the other hand, I have a feeling that author's depression might make the ultimate Annie v. Kat showdown more likely, so there is a sort of silver lining in that dark cloud too... I hope not, otherwise it will end in disaster and the comic will end abruptly. I want an uplifting ending, dammit! The comic's too positive (most of the time) for a downer, nihilistic ending! (Though more mechaKat would be appreciated, if you take requests, Tom! ) You know, when it all ends, there will be a sad-happy wistful moment when Kat dies in Annie's arms and realizes what has happened, getting back in touch with her humanity and that can be seen as a sort of uplifting ending, canitnot?

I'm assuming Miltiary Police as well, nothing else specifically stands out. Metropolitan Police may be the official name of the merged London police nowadays, but back then they were individual police forces for each region of the city rather than one large Metropolitan force I think. Also wow at the mini-lifetime contained in the comment! She lived to see the birth of her first grandson though (I wonder if it was That Guy), so had a reasonable life. Although this is a chapter about death... is every comment going to contain how the character from ww2 died? Maybe not That Guy™, but Nigel looks kinda like Jack Hyland. Hmm. I thought that at first, but I think it's just that he wears the same style of jacket

Ehhh let's hope for something even better - like perhaps reconciliation without final death of any protagonists, perhaps displacing Coyote and Mr. Llelawynn as new leaders in a couple of in-comic years. That's my hope, maybe? But no one knows but Tom...and good luck getting him to tell you!

Although this is a chapter about death... is every comment going to contain how the character from ww2 died? Seen that way, that's actually quite a happy story. Many people die from cancer. It's just.... way he chooses to say it and what he says about the lives, which is mostly just the deaths of everybody. Everyone dies, but this just is told rather laconically as a story of people dying, more than about how they live, even if they lived long and happy lives. Or this is how I reflect it now, why it seems sad to me. okay, have fun, and those artistically gifted, remember to see opportunities! 'zims out.

I dunno, it has that kind of smirk to it. Also for some reason the hair reminded me of him at first, though looking back through the search he's had longer hair the entire time :?

Nigel's smirk also reminds me of spiderJack.
If Betty were Annie's grandmother then her grandfather would be the fire elemental. The 'death by heart attack' would fit this.
Putting these two hypotheses together also gives us the possibility that Jack is Annie's half cousin. (you'd think people would know this, though!?)
Like a lot of people I'm not sure if Tom's comment is coloured by his recent issues or whether it's my reaction, having heard of them. Hopefully he gets a smooth patch. He's overdue one.

Geeze, Tom.
Thanks for that cheery information.
Kind of reminds me of the Book Thief in a way.

I hope she's not related to Annie at all. Everyone being related to someone else always makes the world feel smaller.

Didn't know Tom has been depressed lately.
Anyways, I wonder if she is supposed to be related to one of the modern day characters? Also, who's to say that her husband didn't die until her daughter was grown up.

Also: Notice how the boys greeted each other? GREETINGS, HUMAN PERSON! WE WISH TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOU! I've noticed with from watching a lot of British tv that this is a common way for boys to greet each other in the UK. I'm not sure how common it actually is though.

Not sure why y'all are speculating about Tom's mood. I thought the comment was kinda funny, and consistent with the tone of the comic. I mean, this is a chapter about Mort dying. What do you expect? Strawberry flavored kittens and sparkles?

Random thought - Betty:Hetty? Guessing it's just a coincidence. At first I thought this too, but Betty's too much of a cutie to fuck with people as an undying porcelain doll... right? "Betty had a crush on her brother's friend, Morty. Will they get married? (Nope he dies and she marries someone else, has a daughter, loses her husband to cancer and dies herself shortly after the birth of her first grandson)"For once Tom has expounded too much... So, the British forum personnel, pray enlighten us: What does 'the mp' stand for? So, the British forum personnel, pray enlighten us: What does 'the mp' stand for? Wild guess: Military Police? Probably not "Member of Parliament". Yep. MP is short for military police, and in this place it probably refers to a checkpoint or office. (AND THEY GOT TO RIDE BSA TRIUMPHS THOSE LUCKY DOGS)

Did anyone remember Jones know Mortimer's full name? Because I sure didn't. An' short bios tend to focus on what happens leading up to someone's death, not on all the deaths themselves, which is what makes it depressing (including the fact that her husband dies of cancer -- that's a downer even if you already know he's gotta die, and that he died before seeing his first grandson born, and that the daughter loses her parents at a pretty young age)

Uuuuuuuuuuuhh.......
Now I'm sad.
I leave the comic alone for a few months and come back to binge. And I catch up to this.
Jones referring to Mort as a "boy", him having a rather childish personality as well as being somewhat awkward in how to deal with romantic concepts, his hijinks with his ghost powers, all of it were indications that yes, Mort is in fact the ghost of a child. I knew that he was a kid. I understood that he was.
But to actually see him as he was. It's a bit too much really.
That first panel.
That nickname.
....
That last panel. He's younger than Annie and Kat was at the start of the comic, isn't he....
That last panel. That is likely the last time they saw each other, isn't it?
Is this him retelling his final records?
Why do I make myself sadder

My first thought on this: was Mort a fan of Popeye? This look... D: That stuff about Betty. That's cold, Tom. Flashbacks tend to be like this. Just not always explicitly, that's all.

I got to wondering about the slang term 'jerry' (which I had correctly guessed referred to Germans), checked on wikipedia and while it origionates in WWI, it didn't really come into common usage until WWII. So, I'm guessing it links more strongly to WWII.
Can anybody place a date on the car? Looks like it could be from the 1930s.

Betty is going to die. What is the use of it all? (MP = mushroom paddies, emergency food cultivation in a network of long caves beneath London which in the years following the war was refitted for a kind of public transportation system.) If Betty were Annie's grandmother then her grandfather would be the fire elemental. Isn't the fire elemental line strictly female? Or did I just make that up?

Why else would Tom give us her life story?

D'awww, lookit those eyes in panel 4. So flipping adorable. Why, I bet she-
...I hate you, Tom.
Also, you really should warn us about spoilers like that. I mean, this is usually a pretty lighthearted comic; I totally wasn't expecting a major character like Mort to just kick the bucket out of nowhere.

I'm pretty sure that MP to the British stands for Member of Parliment. All of the British culture Ive been exposed to tells me thats what it usually stands for. Also it would be weird for Mort's Mom to be in the Military Police. Cause 1930's.

Looks like this chapter will hit like a... bombshell Though seriously, I am not particularly surprised that based on the end of the last chapter that this one is shaping up to be a sad one. I'm not the only one who had thought Mort died as a soldier in a war, was I?
