How likely is it that the book is actually what they're looking for?

Ooookay. So, confirmations of : - Kat is an afterlife guide (because she ran first to the door and didn't get restricted) - This is the same guy, otherwise he would have said "Can I help you ?" (no?) I just can't wait to know what that book is about ! Seems like a great book, there is a sun on it. And it's blue. I want to open it and read it. Edit : Oh and I want to see Mort and Annie's faces when they will understand that Kat IS an afterlife guide. Or try to understand why the restriction didn't work with her, but refuse to accept the truth... MOUAHAHAHAHAHA. (Sorry, pregnancy hormones do a lot of bad things to me.)

Kat is a member of Anny's party, therefore permission is extended by assosiation. But yah, that's totally the same guy.

... Holyyyyyy crap.
Remember all the worshiping of Kat by the robots? How they think that she's an Angel with power over life and death?
Remember how Gods are made in this setting? How Coyote came to be? The figure that Zimmy saw when she looked at Kat?
The Robots are slowly turning Kat into a Goddess through their worship.

I just realized that after being limited to making friends with afterlife guides for most of her life, Annie finally had a normal friend. Then those pesky robots came and made her an afterlife guide.
Aw, dammit.

I don't get why everyone is assuming Kat is an afterlife guide? She is being made into an angel/god by the robots, but that's no the same thing at all.
Just because kat is becoming a weird machine god doesn't mean she suddenly gains all characteristics f all other supernatural things.

Her first recognized, proper act as a goddess was to bring Wing-bot to the other side via liberal doses of explodium. Actually, in tongue-in-cheek technical parlance, she -literally- released its "magic blue smoke". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_smokeSeems just natural? (Edit: Congrats, Gulby! *goes to think Gunnerkrigg-themed baby names*)

I've enjoyed this chapter very much.

I think Kat is not so much a psychopomp as a cyberpomp.

Humans hold a lot of more or less serious believes about electronics, so in the Gunnerverse robots would have a magical "component" My scientific method of kicking or hitting computers that don't do what I want might actually work there..Jeanne for a french girl would be nice Would Antimony sound very silly in French?

Thank you all very much for your congrats, I'm happy ! xD I'm pregnant for six months now, only three left and I am scared... The name is already chosen, but I won't tell neither the name nor the gender, until the delivery. Antimony would be awsome, Jeanne is a little too "old" in France (but it's too bad, because I like this name ! ). All I can say is, if it's a male, he will have the same name than one of the GKC's character, but if it's a female, she won't have an avatar in this wonderful universe (so far). Sorry for the flood. Now, I didn't call it first, I know that, but it seems like this is a great confirmation that Kat is indeed a psychopomp (or cyberpomp xD). A psychopomp isn't a god by nature, but a god can be whatever he or she likes, so, Kat could totally be a goddess AND a psychopomp ! :3 And I so love Mort's face(s) in this chapter.

Killing something (even by acts of godly power) and bringing it properly to the ether are totally not the same thing. Except robots don't naturally enter the ether, but this is an assumption. It could be that the greater forces behind the scenes have designated her as a guide because it's her fault they now start to have etheric properties.

Why is nobody considering the possibility that there's no "magic ward" on Final Records that prevents restricted access?

I wonder, if Mort and Annie will ask Kat, how she knows which book it is. Of course, I'm also waiting for guy to say, "To see this book you'll need Permit A38. You can get that at the front desk."
