I have an idea
What if Annie is upset because she's jealous?
Not of Paz or Kat (Probably not), but maybe because she's upset that she doesn't get to kiss boys (or girls, whatever)
Like look at her life. How many of her friends are in relationships? Almost all of them.
Maybe she's upset because she saw Kat, her BFFL, advance into a legitimate relationship?
Speaking from personal experience, there's not much worse than realizing that while everyone around you gets to grow up and mature, you've been stuck in fifth grade emotionally.

I think it's supremely unlikely that she's homophobic, or on the opposite end of the scale, attracted to Kat. I'd be disappointed if either of those turned out to be true.
She's upset not only that Kat apparently decided to hide a big part of her life from Annie, but that she might be losing her only friend. I don't think it's going to end up being that she's depressed that everyone around her is in a relationship.
The tree was where they had their first real moment together which I think really solidified their friendship. Annie sitting outside the room is symbolic of feeling like the days of innocence are gone and that she doesn't think she knows Kat like she used to. The art here's really cool as well. The bright artificial environment contrasted with the cold, metal hallway.
I get the feeling the rest of this chapter is going to be really sad.

I rather like this theory, true or not. This happens in real life all the time, not just to kids, but adults as well. " All my friends are getting married, having kids. Why am I alone? Am I really that unlovable?" Those kind of thoughts are surprisingly common, leading to depression. Sometimes even suicide. It's hard to see your friends having a life when you don't. And this IS a story about a girl who lacks social skills.

And this IS a story about a girl who lacks social skills. I doubt it. It seems unlikely that Tom would include mention of people like Parley/Andrew/Robot/Shadow/etc in this chapter considering what's going on. Seems to me like the rest of Thread's going to focus solely on Annie and Kat's relationship. Annie going to the tree, which is important to their history, shows that their friendship is what she's really thinking about here.

Yeahhhhh, I don't think those other characters need to show up in this chapter either. Señor Goose just posed an alternative motive for her sadness. I think it is unlikely to be the main motive, but it is a good theory and very true to life for a lot of people.

Cheer up m8. Now that you're a Gunner you're going to have to beat the ladies off with a stick. My dad told me that every single time I got a haircut when I was growing up. WHERE WERE THE LADIES DAD WHERE WERE THEY They're hiding inside Bed Bath and Beyond. You have to go inside and make loud noises to startle one. Once they're on the run, pick yourself a strong one, then hogtie, shotgun wedding and happily ever after! The haircut is just to make you more aerodynamic. Y'see.

Onto the subject of Mort, I love the WW1 theories and posts, but it is all based on a single line on the wall that we have no idea when or why it was put there. Remember, we have seen "buy war bonds" posters on other walls, this may have nothing to do with it. Also, Muut said Mort is "new and inexperienced", so I think his is a much more recent death. Again, just my opinion. Well, how long Muut has been around, since Old Kingdom of Egypt I take? If you can count your lifespan in thousands of years, WW1 may seem to be a quite relative occurrence.

Muut originates from Native American Cahuilla tribe, not ancient Egypt. But you have a point about relativity of age for near-immortsl spirits. Also, Mort may not even have manifested as a ghost until decades after his death for all we know; we don't know how ghosts are born, after all.

Actually, Muut's been around even before the Native Americans which created him. Coyote put the stars in the sky, remember? Will you be referring to yourself as Gunner Goose now? Or maybe Guñer Goose? A cookie for you, for paying attention on your fellow community members.
