Ah, but when is he ignorant, and when is he just (without speaking untruths) letting people think he is? For instance, did he realize the "A. Carver" borne by the "garment" did not signify Anthony? I suspect so, though indeed, the Forest folks cannot be expected to be "very good with human clothing". Ah, but then, was he as ignorant of "that cut" on Annie's cheek, looking "like it was caused by something very powerful", as he appeared to be? I suspect so. Jeannie was part of a plan designed as a foil to the Forest. Though, with Coyote, who can tell? He might have set them up to it in the first place!
