I think we had this debate while it was going on, actually. Unless more is shown otherwise, the relationship between Robot and Shadow can be interpreted either way. They share a love, but that does not necessarily make them lovers or "an item." I don't think they're an item and I don't think they're just best friends. Just something in-between. Before anyone says with benefits, not that either. A very very close platonic relationship... Agreed. Being "an item" or romantically involved or in love doesn't necessarily mean people are having sex.

I know this is a dumb question but are we absolutely sure this is a love letter? Could Tom be... TROLLING ... us?

And what? This still makes much more sense than a love letter from Paz.

I know this is a dumb question but are we absolutely sure this is a love letter? Could Tom be... TROLLING ... us? You may actually have a point. The letter may not even be a love letter, but a message that the girls are misinterpreting. Can't say much until we actually know what it says, though.

Considering that one is a arrangement of solid photons and the other is a machine, I don't know how the logistics of that would work.

Again, I fail to see how a platonic relationship between S13 and Shadow2 makes them "an item" that excludes any possibility of S13 having an attraction towards Kat.

Again, I fail to see how a platonic relationship between S13 and Shadow2 makes them "an item" that excludes any possibility of S13 having an attraction towards Kat. I think it's mostly because of the possibly wishful thinking that after realising what true love and friendship means thanks to Shadow 2 Robot has figured out that his earlier obsession towards Kat was kind of unhealthy and creepy. He hasn't shown stalkerish behaviour after the "I love my good friend Shadow"-revelation, as far as I can recall, so I'd call it a viable theory. As far as the letter goes, it's pretty probable that you are wrong, no matter who you are guessing as the author, so it's best not to get too obsessed with one possible interpretation. I don't even consider it impossible that it might be some previously insignificant side character or even somebody completely new. With Tom you can never tell.

I don't have any "It's totally this way" guess for who the author is. Just nitpicking at two close friends being labeled as a romantic couple.

I'm gonna guess that Annie actually wrote the letter, but it's not a confession of her feelings. Instead, it's meant to get Kat to reveal who she likes, and maybe act as a catalyst (oh ho ho) for a new relationship.

New theory! (I hope the dart board is big enough) Oh don't worry, the dartboard has long since broken it's string and fallen on the floor under the weight of all the wild guesses lobbed at it. We just spray-painted the whole wall with a bulls-eye so we can keep chucking madly. Although it has been getting a little breezy in here lately.

I'm just gonna point to the bird foot on the title page. (I'm usually quite wrong in my interpretations of title pages.)

I have to say, it is kinda odd the person who wrote the letter already knows Kat changed rooms. The person who wrote it kinda had to be "in the know" as it did just happen. Only the Giant Crab, Kat, Annie and Ray definitely knew. I'm not even sure Robot and Shadow knew. I do like that theory. Annie wrote it on a computer as Kat would recognise her handwriting

Has there ever been a name given to the blonde-haired girl that keeps appearing in the background? The wiki names her "Becky Ground".

Or will they have to get that crazy fairy or the magpie?

Agreed. It would be much less entertaining, for one. I vote Paz because it's plausible and cute, though I have a nagging feeling that it's actually a robot. Also: is the paper actually a sort of printer paper, or is it just futuristic-looking notebook paper? It certainly has lines on it. Fu- Futuristic-looking? *Facepalm* That stuff is old, back from a time when printers were a lot less advanced than they are today. And still I am shocked at how many people seem to think it's Paz, or any non-robot for that matter. I mean, Tom's practically been beating us over the head with the "digital" nature of the letter...

That's exactly why. In a comic like this, three answers will be proposed to any question asked: • the obvious one • the exact opposite of the obvious one • the one that the answerer secretly wants it to be

I guess they need a new lead for the City Face films after he maybe got eaten by the seagull during the last movie's cliffhanger. I bet he shows up at the end of City Face 4 though as the big twist ending.

It's old school dot-matrix printing paper. Note the holes on both sides which the printer uses to roll the paper forward. Those are normally meant to be torn off once you've done with the printing, but isn't here, for some reason. On *white* paper, the tractor strips were often (not always) meant to be torn off, and the paper was perforated appropriately to make that reasonably easy to do. But, this is greenbar paper. That sort of paper usually was not perforated. After all, it's not as if anyone would not realize it was computer paper - the green bars made it obvious. And having the tractor strips firmly attached meant one could use them for holding the paper in a binder. (I wrote the programs for lots of reports that went into binders. And when I began my career, the source code for the programs also was printed out and put into binders.) Panel 5 here probably shows it. They have a straw and knife in front of them. I just re-read that page, and I noticed the outside reference I saw and appreciated the first time I read through the early pages of GKC. I went back and read the discussion for page 248, but it did not mention it at all. I did not want to necro a thread from 2007, and wasn't really sure it was worth it's own topic, so I'll just ask here: Did anyone else notice the reference and do they know the source? I'm just wondering if anyone else here reads the same material. Are you referring to this?I'm still confused why people are still thinking it's Paz, though. If it was a letter of apology it would have been signed, and a love letter from her only makes sense in the warped mind of a shipper. I never thought it was from Paz; I just pointed out several ways that it being from Paz could be justified. Their not knowing who it's from - which implies it's unsigned - eliminates most (but not all) of those justifications. Particularly in combination with how embarrassed Katrina is, which pretty well narrows down what the content is. But at the time I wrote them, that was information we didn't have. What is Annie pointing at that Jack can see? And/or, how can he see it? And, truly, there ought to be more super-close platonic relationships in media. Romance is not the end-all-be-all of being close to someone. www.egscomics.com/?date=2013-04-12 and the next few pages of that comic... I know this is a dumb question but are we absolutely sure this is a love letter? Could Tom be... TROLLING ... us? With how embarrassed Katrina is and how much Annie seems to be enjoying teasing her, I'd say it's >99% likely to be a love letter. I could possibly see Kat being that red-faced over a few pages of really badly done mathematics/engineering... but would Annie understand that it's bad? And comment that it's eloquently written? I have to say, it is kinda odd the person who wrote the letter already knows Kat changed rooms. The person who wrote it kinda had to be "in the know" as it did just happen. Only the Giant Crab, Kat, Annie and Ray definitely knew. I'm not even sure Robot and Shadow knew. You may notice that Kat moved all her stuff into Annie's room. The likely route to do this involves the more public areas of their dorm. So she probably was seen moving. Alternatively, assume that the sender was not aware of the move. But is aware - like about 9/10 of the school - that Annie and Kat are close friends. Sending the letter to Annie will get it to Kat, while hiding the fact that it was addressed to Kat from everyone else. Of course Annie will know, but since the two girls are close friends she probably would know very soon anyway.
