To help pass the time between this page and the next, here's an animated gif to pretty much cover what happens in the mean time.

It's really a smart choice; he's level-headed, talented, and has a girlfriend who knows how to fight. I suspect the Court realized they'd get two to three mediums for the price of one if they selected him; Parley might go haring off on her own, and Antimony definitely would, but Andrew will never be far from his friends.
Though if he ever does end up in the woods alone, Coyote's subsequent attempts to mess with his head will be deeply amusing. And possibly a little bit sexy.

I'm really concerned now. Smitty is indeed the logical choice, but... I don't want Smitty to die (or be hurt, be put on a bus, etc). I know that Tom is good about tying ends together, but my "Traditions of English Literature" sense is tingling.

I'm surprised nobody's pointed out yet the " incident" which occurred the day after Jones' recommendation. Frankly, I don't see how it could not affect the Court's decision. If they were borderline against Annie before, this would have been enough to make them change their minds. In fact, I will go so far to suggest that Coyote deliberately waited for this moment to tell Annie his "Great Secret". It's too far along in the process to cancel the ceremony, (in fact, an invitation may have been the sign Coyote was waiting for) but early enough for the Court to make a last-second choice swap. Maybe Smitty's powers interfered with their decision? Is that...something he can do? Headmaster: "Sorry, I flubbed. The real medium is An *drewsmith*. A little cough there, I meant to say An-AN- *DREW*. Just a cold..." PS: Good luck getting along with Ys, Smitface. Yeah, good luck... How many people knew beforehand? Did Jones? Kat's parents? You know, now that you mention it... Anja and Donald's smiles did look a bit phoney... How's Ysengrin gonna take it that he'd be dealing with Smitty from now on? I expect more *grumph* than *growl* from him on this one. Also, what does this make of Jones' comment that Annie's important to the court? Do they have some sinister plan for her? Or a non-sinister one. Medium or no, the Court seems like a group that doesn't abandon its own. (Don't forget to differentiate the actions of individuals from the actions of the group. I think he's going against Jones' recommendation and choosing Smitty on purpose to slight Coyote. I find that a very likely motivation. I'm not sure it would have been enough if Annie was more disciplined, though, since I don't think the headmaster has 100% final word on things like this (there's probably a full Court council, of which he is merely the head). Talking about Antimony being more disciplined... Wow. What changed this little girl into this one? ...We should all know the answer here. And the proper question is not what, but who. How long has Coyote been playing this game of his? Or at least his latest gambit? I know the answer to that one: it started cautiously when a one-armed robot walked into his forest, and then in earnest when he found his opening here. Jones was right. Every time Annie has visited, Coyote has subtly nudged her farther away from the Court, and towards the Forest. Even Ysengrin attacking her plays into this, for it catalyzes the growth of mutual distrust. It even drives a wedge between Antimony and the one whom would be the single greatest obstacle in any sinister plot to take advantage of her. To what end, I wonder? Smitty's got one figured out, at least. (There's bound to be more which haven't even been hinted at yet.) Rey's been a free agent for a long time, but now it looks like his loyalties are settling. Coyote wants to, at the very least, keep those loyalties in flux, as opposed to settling with the Court. If I'm right, the next few pages should verify it. I predict that Coyote will respond to this development in an unusual manner- almost as if he expected it... His words will be carefully chosen to drive the wedge the Court has so kindly set 'twixt themselves and Antimony as deep as possible. He won't be put off at all by Eglamore, Jones, or the Donlans; he would have accounted for them. He'll probably be ready for Parley and Smitty, although perhaps not both of them together... There's a chance they could throw a wrench in it, and you know how Smitty is with chances. Other than that though, only an intervention from a completely unexpected angle will upset his plans. (Meta reasoning tells me this will probably happen, but it might just be wishful thinking.)

Teenage hormones? (Sorry, I couldn't resist). But yes. All things considered, I don't think Coyote will be very surprised that Annie wasn't chosen. Not genuinely surprised, anyway.

Seems fairly obvious to me, but I'm usually wrong in my GC predictions. Annie wants the divide between the court and the forest to be healed. That's what she's trying to do with Jeanne. So if you want everyone to get along, choose Annie. Also she always does her own thing. She's very stubborn. If you want a pawn, which obviously the medium is, or they'd be picked by the forest and court equally, and especially if you want someone to impose order, which is what the court stands for, onto the forest, choose Smitty. Not that that's Smitty's goal, I think he's with Annie, Kat and Parley in wanting to get to the bottom (ahaha) of the divide. But that's what his power is, isn't it?
And obviously Coyote knows this too, so yes, it's aggressive.

I'm imagining some interesting places this COULD go...
a) Andrew's talent for putting things in their proper place and order inspires him to appoint Annie as his assistant... and then resign.
b) Andrew's talent notices that for some reason, certain memories that should be in Ysengrin's head are instead in Coyote's stomach, and relocates them.

I was about to say I don't think that's how his powers work, then I remembered how he ruined the sim. Now I don't know anything.

If they were borderline against Annie before, this would have been enough to make them change their minds. ... Good post, Nnelg. You make some excellent points there. I had forgotten about how The Great Secret fit into the timeline. The fact that Annie needed to be rescued by Eglamore due to a conflict between her and Ysengrin is exactly the opposite of what should be happening with a medium. The Court much prefers orderly affairs all around as opposed to the forest being riled up for any reason. Teenage hormones? (Sorry, I couldn't resist). No need to jest - age, maturity, and unpredictable hormone spikes are all very real concerns and would just be further points against Annie. She's gone from orderly to unruly as she's grown older. Meanwhile, Andrew's powers make him the very pinnacle of order, and he's able to have a healthy relationship with a fiery, older gal. Really, Andrew has always been the right choice , it was just Jones' recommendation and the headmaster's response that seemed to put a nail in that coffin. Now I'm not so sure. Still not ruling out fishy business, though. This page still seems weird.

Well this has been a joke around the MSPA forums for several updates back, but I image-fied it. You're welcome. I've been laughing all day today because I finally get it.
