It can't be time freezing because everything didn't go blue. Yes, I'd forgotten about that. This appears to be something else.

Personally, I think picking Andrew is a calculated insult to Coyote. The Headmaster seems to have has little respect for the creatures of the Forest. As Annie noted previously during medium training, ( gunnerkrigg.com/?p=386), the Headmaster was intentionally rude at their last meeting. He acted as though he had no interest in the proceedings, and his slouchy posture now indicates similar feelings about this meeting. I think he's going against Jones' recommendation and choosing Smitty on purpose to slight Coyote. What he's done here is bare his teeth and assert dominance, in a passive-aggressive way. He's telling the Forest creatures that their known preference for Annie is irrelevant to him - that their wishes are meaningless and there's not a thing they can do to get their way. Now, as to why he would do that? I don't know yet. Right now, I'm assuming it's the usual Court vs. Forest animosity. If there's a deeper personal reason there beyond that, I don't know it yet. But that's my theory.

If I was the headmaster I'd probably choose Smitty too. Parley isn't as level headed and Annie is much too willful to act as the Court's representative.

Wait, what.... and I'm sure this is what the demon Renard is thinking as well.

But that's my theory. And it is a good one, by definition - if we go by the common definition of a good theory as a one shared by me. ;D No, seriously, I think there are also very rational reasons to choose Smitface, who is by far the most neutral, level-headed medium student. Meanwhile, the court clearly walked over Jones' recommendation (unless the trans-smith theory holds). Must be a surprise, not only to Coyote, but also to Jones. ...or then we'll find the headmaster laughing his backside off on the next page, "just kidding, it's Annie".

Well, thats a surprise. The people who said it was gonna be a twist all said Parley. But I guess it does make sense for the guy who makes everything ordered to be a medium.
Also, "I'm surprised they chose me!" Haha, she assumed she was gonna win just as much as Parley and Smitty

Awkward... and hilarious. I kept expecting someone to say, "It's an honor just to be nominated really." His ability is more in line with The Court's general ideology. They seem to see themselves as the order from chaos types. Either way, Monday should be fun.

Smitface ruined the ceremony!
But yeah, we can safely assume Andrew's ability is a big help in negotiations. And given what happened last time Annie went into the Forest...
Can't wait for Coyote's reaction. Let's see if the choice was an intentional slight, as people are saying...

You know, looking at the last frame a little closer, Annie seems to be smiling less, as if she suddenly realises something isn't right. The other two are a split second behind her in realising this, it seems.

Jones recomended Ann. I'm pretty sure. Either way the headmaster didn't choose Jones' recomendation
I think HM's choice might have been because:
1. Smits power was at work. Maybe just a slip up? Hinting at the disorder Ann's medium ship would have wrot 2. Smit's power might actually be so strong not picking him is out of the question? I mean being able to control chaos, having all the luck in the world is...
3. The court has much bigger plans for Ann and Parly

Whoops! I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. Parley did say that Annie was obviously gonna be a medium way back, so it would perhaps be a bit anticlimactic if she actually was chosen.
And to be fair, Smithy does seem like he has the right attitude for the job. Still curious if there's something more behind this, though.

Monday: "George Parley. The court has decided that you shall be the next medium's loyal sidekick."
Wednesday: "Antimony Carver. Coyote has decided that you shall be the next medium of Gillitie Wood. He will bestow on you his terrible skills of gardening."

I actually had to go back and read the first panel three times to make sure I hadn't read it wrong. Fantastic page.

Humm...I'm curious to see where this goes. I wasn't expecting this twist because it was so elementary and simple. I'm not sure how it's going to serve the plot. I mean, it's going to remove Annie from a lot of interesting affairs of the Court and Forest and reduce her back to the level of an ordinary student, again. I don't mind Court-centric chapters again, but I'm rather dissappointed by the lost chance to explore the internal politics of the place from Annie's perspective. All this being said, I really wonder how those present are going to take the news. I really don't think that Smitty's going to be too thrilled by his new assignment. And how does Coyote react to being denied his new favourite toy? Especially when she's replaced by a guy whose power is, as Parley puts it, make everything boring? Makes you wonder if the Headmaster is intentionally trying to get on Coyote's nerves with his choice. But anyway, the page itself is pretty hilarious. Epic beat panel, FTW.

Sorry guys, sorta slopped this one out because in hurry. I think Coyote will think this is funny. The headmaster really played a good trick on those three schlubs. Also not sure this eliminates any contact between Coyote and Antimony unless she's getting dropped from Medium training classes permanently and I doubt that is the case. PS: Good luck getting along with Ys, Smitface.

I knew it was going to be Smitty. Think about it, Annie is FAR too biased towards the forest people to be a level-headed and impartial medium. She clearly prefers them over the court. She would be an exceedingly poor choice to represent the court on disputes between the two parties. Also, I don't think there's any secret plot going on with Jonesy just because her recommendation wasn't followed through on. The headmaster said the COUNCIL has decided, not Jones made a recommendation and we had no choice but to go on it. Her recommendation was simply that; a recommendation. That's it for my opinion fueled rant! ALSO I'M NEW HERE, HELLO INTERNET

That would be the moment, when their minds tries to comprehend the nature of the parallel bizarro-universe they suddenly dropped in. That was my first thought, but their expressions didn't change. But this sure is weird. Whatever happened to "she is the clear choice?" Maybe Smitty's powers interfered with their decision? Is that...something he can do? It would be far more amusing if Smitty's make-everything-boring power enforced "business as usual, no speed bumps" mode on the event, so that whatever Jonathan may say, everyone heard what they expected to hear. The headmaster could have ignored the advice from Jones this time - indeed, it makes sense, since Smitty looks calm and bland, and his make-everything-boring power would prevent unpleasant surprises, and all that. But as far as we can tell, no one ever urged Andrew to practice conscious control and switch it off - because hey, it makes things right, what's the worst that could happen? Thus of course here and now it was on, as always. Oops? I expect it slightly more to be Coyote's games again, however. Then again, expecting it is already a reason to doubt.

"Congrats!"This is the smart choice and there's so many things that could cause it to happen. At same time, it's not the choice that the comic has been building up to, and feels incredibly silly. One of the problems of reading page-by-page, I suppose. We'll see what it actually means in the coming weeks.

So it's not me - you heard it too, Renard. An-drew, not An-timony. Just wait for the kids to process it - it'll be fun to watch.
Other thoughts: Jonesy: Unexpected, but it makes sense, in a way. At least he'll behave. Jimmy Jims: Note to self: get two beacons. Ysengrin might try to kill that kid out of boredom. Coyote: The look on my cousin's face! BWAHAHAHA ... "Chuckles" Ysengrin: ... *grumph*

That's why I said that it was odd to announce the decision in front of Coyote and Ysengrin. They don't need to witness your internal processes.
