What is that music? It's...truly perfect for Gunnerkrigg. Whimsical and melancholy at the same time, and hints of things far ago and long away... It's the save theme from the game Ico. Ooh, thanks for that. (I really need to make the time to play that game. SoC was awesome.)

Speaking of code... there's an easy way to nose around someone's website by putting "images" at the end of the address. Unless the coder is clever and prevents people from viewing that folder. You mean, unless the web server admin is competent and disabled folder browsing. A 404 page is a standard feature of any properly configured web site.

Tom did a good job where most non-professional web designers don't. It was intended as a complement.

I've checked other /image pages on other popular webcomic pages in the past, and almost always get the plain ol' 403 (404 is different, zylonbane) page... except for DD. Har. Sometimes I get the folder, but it's generally on the smaller sites.
Most hadn't gone so far to put up a .gif and a nice melody, though. Some redirect to the home page, but that's it. I agree, it's pretty cool.

Its a Shockwave/Flash object~ Which just increases the coolness factor for me! </geekfest> Yes Zy, no big deal but I remember the first time I got flash working and I was pretty excited about it.

What's likely happened here is that he's got an index.swf in the web-facing images folder, and there's a script or cron job running that automatically copies the next newest comic from some storage directory to the images directory at midnight (GMT -8, probably because the server is in California or Washington somewhere) on mon/tue/wed.

Also:
In this situation, I recommend calling in an air strike, or perhaps dusting off and nuking the site from orbit.

This thing reminds me slightly of one of the Ogdru Hem.
Tom is a Hellboy fan, after all.

Friendly or not, I would NOT be able to sleep in those dorms after seeing that creature. Or step near a body of water ever again for that matter. Nothing should have that many eyes.

Thank you. I wonder why the only place I've seen references to Ico are on Tom's site. The descriptions sound like a great game. Was it bigger in Europe than the US when it came out?

And so, we shall find out if this is a trick or if it is real!

I predict one of two outcomes to this:
1) The crabs (I suspect more than one) are not hostile, and those console devices are for communicating between humans and crabs.
2) Annie hosts a crab-bake for the arriving students.

I looooove this page. ;D Of all the ways Kat could have figured out that thing was real, that had to be the best way possible. One of best pages in GKC, in a way. Three silent panels and the situation deserving this. No worries, i'm sure it just wants a hug ^^ But would this be safe? I think it's kinda cute on this page. Hopefully it's nice and doesn't just have a slow reaction time. Or maybe "it" is freaked out just as much. Of course, I also reckon that the court put the beastie there; his job is to keep boys out of the girl's dorms by scaring them away when they walk across the path. That's dubious. I see how the idea of peeking through those viewports wouldn't even occur to the boys knowing this critter lives in the same pond, though. Nothing should have that many eyes. ur a phylumist!
