You are probably right rafk. It probably lives there and is probably quite friendly. It seems odd that the court didn't let the kids know that there was a monstrous crab on the way to their dorms though.

NEW IDEA:
That IS Mort, but he didn't tell Annie anything about this so that he could scare them together and hopefully reopen the bond between them.

Ah, I love the classics. "Elmer (Kat) thinks he's captured that wascally wabbit (Annie) until he looks off to the side and sees Bugs waving at him." If this were animated, Kat would be doing a double take right about now ;D And, of course, Kat has been acting a little crabby lately.

It seems odd that the court didn't let the kids know that there was a monstrous crab on the way to their dorms though. Maybe the Court doesn't know about it yet (as I suggested in past threads, it might have just arrived, or been dormant for a long time and escaped notice). We know that they're not omniscient (they don't know about Jeanne, they don't know that Annie rebuilt Robot and sent him across the bridge, they don't know that Annie recovered Robot's CPU and that Kat's building him a new body, etc.). Maybe the crab is another secret about the place that even the teachers haven't discovered yet.

I'm not convinced that the Giant Crab Monster is part of the Court, either.
It doesn't appear to be hostile, but just because it hasn't pinched Kat's head off doesn't mean it's friendly.
It could be wild, curious and previously undiscovered. Some creatures respond to loud noises and sudden movement and fortunately Kat, thinking its all part of Annie's gags, hasn't made any.
So, don't run. Back away slowly.

Maybe that was scheduled for the first day of the new schoolyear, but has not happend yet ? Well, Annie still has that beacon-stick from Mr. Eglamore. This would be an excellent time to test it ;D

A docile giant crab-like crustacean? the Court has the best Dorm Mascots ever.
it would make sense that the court wouldn't endanger the students. but it would give them new experiences to help them grow.

Aw, I think it wants to be friends! That's actually my bet. Of course, I also reckon that the court put the beastie there; his job is to keep boys out of the girl's dorms by scaring them away when they walk across the path. ... so it thinks Kat is a boy? Oh snap.

It definitely seems friendly. It moved considerably closer to Kat since the last page and reached out it's little baby claw instead of the giant scary one. If it was hostile, but slow moving, I'd think it would've reached with the pincer or that freaky mouth of his.
In other words, until we found out what it is, I've named it Mr. Snuggles.

Or maybe it's their class pet! Like a hermit crab! Only bigger! In my brother's kindergarden class, they had a hermit crab as the class pet, and you got to take it home with you for a weekend. Best class pet, EVAR. Except it doesn't fit in the dorms.

Last two panels are awesome. First five are awesome too.
Just out of interest, how long has the link for chapter 33 been down at the bottom of the page? This is only chapter 32...

Anyone notice the crab hugging in panel 3 0.0 She's just petting it's face or something, doesn't look like she is hugging it. Just out of interest, how long has the link for chapter 33 been down at the bottom of the page? This is only chapter 32... A good couple of updates now. A few people have been pointing it out in previous threads. Yea, Tom put that there accidentially I guess and he really has no reason to remove it since it reveals little.

Anyone notice the crab hugging in panel 3 0.0 I can't imagine Kat hugging a big wet crab.. I think she's just gesturing in front of the crab and it just looks like she's touching it.

Yea, Tom put that there accidentally I guess and he really has no reason to remove it since it reveals little. It can't have been accidental, he had to put code there for it to appear. Its coded to point to the homepage. When the chapter is uploaded, he'll change it to whatever page number it has. Speaking of code... there's an easy way to nose around someone's website by putting "images" at the end of the address. Unless the coder is clever and prevents people from viewing that folder. www.gunnerkrigg.com/images/I'm pretty impressed that Tom knew to handle this and for what appears. This hasn't been mentioned in a while so I think some of the new folks haven't seen it yet.

Whether it was accidental or not, it still reveals little. I suppose that's what Tom's working on right now and it seems he's excited about it enough to give us a 'teaser'

Oh dear.
On Friday Paz shows up, revealing to Kat and Annie a couple of factoids about the crab. Its name is Robert. It enjoys chess, wine, jazz, and 19th century French literarure.

It does seem non hostile at the least. You gotta love the looks on their faces, though!

I'm also of the opinion that this is not a Giant Enemy Crab, but really a Giant Friendly Crab. As far as I know, crustaceans are pretty quick when they're hostile, so the fact that it let Kat touch its claw and didn't react is a good sign, I guess.
Of course giant animals of any kind can be dangerous regardless of their intentions.

Well, they WERE expecting the minotaur to be there, even if Basil did catch them by surprise. If anything, the crab thing looks like it belongs in either a japanese monster movie, an old b-movie, or some other horror/thriller movie.
At least Kat and Annie don't smell like fish, or the thing might get confused and think they are food.
I'm sure Annie has seen some strange things while in Gillitie for the summer and she is used to some of the freakier psycopomps such as Ketrak or Moddey-Dhoo. It's more the unexpected 'what the hell IS that and what is it doing here??' that's freaking her out.
