Oh, oh, oh. D: I always worry about my friends thinking this, but having it said to your face... And Kat, having the bravery and the trust in their friendship to say it.

Okay, upon rereading the previous chapter "fire spike" that let up to all of this, I am going to essentially take Annie's side on this one. www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=808The way the panels are contorted when Annie runs off suggests that she is in a very emotionally distressed and volatile state. Everyone has times like these when they aren't really thinking about how they are affecting others. She decides to stay in the forest for the summer not because of fun and games, but because she almost killed Eglamore and wants to learn how to better control her emotions and therefore her strange newly discovered-to-be-linked-to-her-strange-genetics powers and NOT end up accidentally killing someone she cares for. (just imagine, Kat and Annie hanging out in Paris...Kat steps on Annie's foot on accident, Annie gets mad and accidentally sets Kat on fire......sorry for the TERRIBLE example, but you know.) Also, Coyote also mentions that having Annie stay in the woods is a 'tactical advantage' when speaking with Jones (a tactical advantage to which side, though?). However, these events lead me to have the feeling that Annie was getting bags under her eyes and triapsing in the unfamiliar woods rather than touring Europe for a higher purpose. Not only does it relate to her training and responsibility as the de facto Medium of the court, but is also a way to help her grow as a person. Also, comparatively, I've done a lot worse when it comes to abandoning my friends suddenly in terms of my motives and circumstances...and have been forgiven...over...a...long...period...of....time. I feel like Kat should understand that our best friends also have their own lives and different challenges to pursue. Being a best friend, or even a lover for that matter, does not mean that you HAVE TO do everything together. Annie also has her responsibilities as the acting medium of the court. Kat could do well to respect Annie's sacrifices and appreciates the risks that she took. Although, at this point in the chapter its hard to say how long Kat's attitude will last. And I do agree that leaving suddenly like that is just not cool, but under her circumstances is in no way *as* terrible and thoughtless as people are making it out to be.

Huh. Actually I wonder that as well. By what Jones told Annie when she ran off, she put a lot of people at the Court in danger....And we don't know if that little flare of hers burned Eglamore or not. Suffice to say it'll not only be awkard, but I wouldn't be too surprised if Eglamore is a tad unpleasant with her because she just acted again without a thought to the ramifications of said actions for the Court. And while we know the reasons why she did it, I think he'll be a little less sympathetic than Kat. Actually, I think he might be very sympathetic about Annie's situation, burning aside. He did love Surma too and learning that Annie reacted the way she did after learning how Surma died, he'd probably be a little more understanding of the situation. True. But I wonder if initially he may not be so much (or seem not to be) because of his duties as the Court's Protector. I don't mean that he won't have any sympathy for her at all, just that their initial encounter may be more tense than pleasant, given the circumstances her departure may have caused. However, I agree, if he knew or found out that it had somethind to do with finding about Surma's death, I'm pretty sure he'd understand. He'd probably advise not just running into the forest like that, but he'd undestand her emotional distress. Perhaps it might lead to finding out more about her mother during her school days?

Nobody seems to have mentioned it yet, but I think it's curious to see that the schisms have matured not just Annie and Kat, but Renard as well.

Well, that's actually an improvement, I think, frank explanations are way better than cold shoulder.
I also do not think there is anything dangerous in the water.

I don't think it fits the tone of the comic - it's more character-driven than action-driven. The Court might not put anything dangerous in the water, but on the other hand, it's done a few strange things in the past (everything from storing a possessed Rogan Orjak in a holding cell on Court grounds, who is able to break out and damage the girls' dorm, to lax security systems, to "kidnapping" children on a camping trip). So it is possible that they might have permitted something to move into the water near the school dorms for their own reasons.

Delurk. Hi everybody. Annie becomes a forest protector, Kat becomes a court leader. Epic climax battle. Former friends are now bittersweet enemies at war. Kat becomes this strips' main antagonist by the end. Or maybe Annie becomes a forest protector, Kat becomes a court leader, and through their friendship they usher in a new era of peace and cooperation between court and wood.

*de-lurks after a year* Haha, exactly what i thought. Makes the page doubly good since it reminds me of one of my favourite Watchmen scenes. I wonder what this "splish" is. Renard did say there was something swimming out there...

I know that everybody is getting their hopes up that Annie will suddenly rescue Kat and their friendship will be as good as new, but that would be too easy. Tom isn't the kind of guy who would put his characters in that sort of situation and make them have a sudden reconciliation. It's going to be a while before these two are truly friends again, and even then the dynamics of their relationship will probably be different.

...I don't know if I've posted here before, but I was surprised by suggested meanings of the "Splish"!
......I assumed it was the boots. I figured that Annie had followed her up the elevator and tossed them out.

And guys, sometimes a splish is just a splish. Yea, it could be a wave from the wake of a boat somewhere, or a fish. Those yellow things are either fish or dorm lights. As for Eglamore getting burnt, at most he probably got slightly scorched from the heat. I'm sure he has faced alot worse.

And guys, sometimes a splish is just a splish. Not in Gunnerkrigg Court, it's not! Glad someone else felt that this was similar to the famous(?) Watchmen scene. Will it end with an awkward handshake?! Only time will tell! Man, if I could draw, I would totally make related fanart of this scene. Something tells me that Kat would be thrilled to be Nite Owl. They both love makint things.

I think Annie will leave the Boots in Kat's room. then Annie will go back to her own room and close the door.
where Annie will proceed to break down in tears. Reynard will come over and nuzzle Annie's shoulder. Annie will hug Reynard around the neck, and sob. "Kat doesn't like me anymore." Annie Spends the whole night crying into Reynard's fur.
Kat finishes moving her stuff, and spends the night listening to Annie crying next door.
Morning comes. three scenarios. 1 - Annie Just stays in her room all day quietly crying. Kat goes about classes as per normal, till she starts to feel a little guilty and makes nice with Annie.
2 - Annie gets sick from sleeping on the cold floor with Reynard all night. Does Kat feel sorry for her sick friend?
3 - Awkward moments throughout the day as they pass each other in classes, halls, cafeteria, dorms.

The 'kidnapping' thing seems to have been something that Martha, Bob, and Eglamore planned out, not neccesarily something the court did. It was intended to be a joke, which backfired on them when the kids figured out what was going on.

Annie is so upset by what Kat said that she runs to the forest for comfort, almost lighting Eglamore AND Jones on fire this time. Kat is then offended that Annie could just skip out on being dorm neighbors like that and tells Annie so when she gets back, causing Annie to get upset...

Awwww, I think it was rather cute. It's her own way of being forgiving, if not fully understanding, of Annie's situation. They've been through a lot together. It'll take more than an unexpected separation to keep them apart.

I personally think the "splish" is just something in the water, e.g. a fish, going about its business. The purpose of having it is not for its significance but to show us Kat's reaction. If she felt calm and at ease, she would have ignored it. The fact that she stopped and looked shows us: - She's tense and, therefore, reacts to the slightest noise, and
- Either because of the design of the new dorms and/or her feelings towards Annie, she doesn't feel at home in these dorms. That's quite significant given that we can surmise, from what we know of her backstory, that she's lived at the court all her life.

By the way: I wonder if they can hang curtains over the port-holes in the girls' dorms with magnets. You can't drill holes in a pressure hull for conventional curtains without dire consequences.
Then again, maybe curtains are impossible by design. The whole facility seems designed to encourage the students to develop divers interests.
[Get it? "Divers(e) interests?"] ;D

This person in the comment section makes a good point. @everyone yelling at Annie. It's true that you can't fault Annie much, her actions were understandable. But if having Annie as her only friend increases Kat's stress levels 200%, you can see why she might need to distance herself a little. There's only so long you can go through the emotional roller coaster of having a friend who does stuff like Annie does, until it starts to break you.

On the other hand, who else would stick by Kat with all the weird stuff she gets up to? It's hardly a one-sided friendship.

I know I sound hypocritical but maybe the "splish" could be the person who was swimming, and they're coming up to ask Kat what's wrong.
