hi hi
She's channeling Surma awful strong right there in panel 6.

As someone else said earlier, it's only the second page of the chapter.
Maybe Tom wanted to deal with reuniting Annie and Renard first.

Yeah, but ours-meddling readers curiosity can never be satisfied... : 3 Good thing too, would be pretty boring if we got answers non-stop. Even for simple stuff like this.
Or maybe something else, but we gotta keep saying things. : D

I suspect Jones brought her uniform back to her dorm for her in a later visit, since she doesn't seem to be carrying it with her. She doesn't seem to be carrying it? I think she's wearing it! Look, there's whats left of her skirt, and the beige coloured piece over the black turtleneck has probably once been her sweater vest. And her blouse? I suspect it didn't make it. xD

To those who say, "it's no fun if we just get all the answers," I agree. I don't have an issue with not knowing everything, I have an issue with missing out on what Annie gets to experience. The vast majority of this webcomic is shown through Annie's 'perspective;' she's in nearly every comic it seems. Most of the parts of Annie's life that are omitted are just things that don't really change her or anyone else. However, this particular summer was obviously quite the ordeal, and was filled to the brim with new and exciting experiences. Skipping over THAT is what bothers me. I don't need to know EVERYTHING about the forest; do you think Annie would learn all there is to know about the forest over the course of one summer? I just want to see the forest through Annie's eyes, just as we've been seeing the court through Annie's eyes.

I find it odd that Renard seems surprised(?) by the fact that Annie smells like the forest after she spent an entire summer there and looks like a tree barfed on her. Wow. Annie has grown up from the time in the forest. Does anyone else think in the last panel, Annie looks scarily like Surma? YES. I rarely post here, but I just have to say that This. Strip. Is. Adorable. One of your best ever, Tom. Sentiment: shared.

I don't think that's surprise, I think that's him being overwhelmed and startled by the smell. You know how dogs get excited about certain smells and sniff frantically? That's the impression I'm kinda gettin' here.

We weren't told about Annie's childhood right away neither, but in small portions throughout the story, where it was needed/Tom felt like it. We will get the same treatment here. Though I understand you. So far we've been with Annie at every important event. Let's hope we will have many flash/callbacks! ^^

I seem to recall that some of edzepp's art showed Annie with longer hair tied twice. Not sure what the black undershirt-type thing is; it doesn't seem to fit in with "raggedy wilderness" attire. I was also expecting a slightly longer skirt, but I guess a short skirt and leggings are a bit more practical. The undershirt looks warm. She does have to sleep in the forest, you know. I doubt they have blankets. The shirts seem like they'd keep her chest down rather well, though. I like her makeup. What's wrong with it? Personally, I think this is better than showing us what happened in the forest first. Her personality change seems rather remarkable to me, and it'd be much less obvious if we saw it happen gradually. This way we see how the forest changed her, and then later we'll learn what happened to prompt those changes.

She looks so awesome D: So much more mature and quirky. She really does look like Surma in the last panel. Hope we get to see the forest too.

Wow, Annie is really OCD about that makeup. A shame, because having her makeupless would have perfectly complemented the forest look. I've suspected for a while that Annie's eyeshadow is a form of supernatural protection. The fact that she continued wearing it in the forest is another point in favor of that theory.

Hahaha, wut. Sorry, no offense, but I cracked a smile when I read that. Should go in the "crazy theories thread."
Doesn't it make much more sense that she's just mimicking her mother (for a myriad of possible reasons), or she uses it as a sort of mask/protective layer?
I mean, she didn't even know about magic when she started wearing it.

Wow. Annie has grown up from the time in the forest. Does anyone else think in the last panel, Annie looks scarily like Surma? Yep. I'm sure the parallel is intentional, of course. Glad to see Annie has returned with BOTH hands intact, too. It's good that neither is hung up on it enough to feel the need to talk about it before they reconcile (if neither feels it even needs to be brought up again, all the better). Probably helps that they were already resigned to spending the summer apart anyway, and Annie coming home all forest-girl is probably more cheering for Renard than Annie coming home from a more mundane vacation. I hope Annie was either able to speak to Kat in the meantime via etheric power or at least send a message back via Jones, or the homecoming there will be at least very awkward. There's no two ways around the fact that Annie ran out on a summer with Kat without even talking to her.

I am completely enthralled by the way Tom weaves his story. Sure, it would've been nice to witness her summer, but seeing this page now is so much more compelling.
I mean, look, here we are, presented with the result of her summer adventure. Her new outfit, new hairstyle, the tired, yet refreshed look on her face. Even the way she's starting to resemble her mother more. Noticing these things and commenting on them stimulates our imaginations, causes our minds to expand and attempt to envelope the possibilities surrounding these new circumstances. In doing so, we can, in our own minds, share in this world Tom weaves for us.
Instead of simply witnessing a linear story from beginning to end, we are given a chance to jump around different planes of possibilities both in the past, present, and future. A tapestry being woven from multiple points and angles, such that, bit by bit we are given revelations in the many mysteries of GC while still being in the dark about the picture as a whole.
It's frustrating, perhaps, but above that it is, to me, tantalizing. And that is damn good storytelling.
I have no doubt that Tom will shed light on the events surrounding the summer in some form or another. If he doesn't, then that, in itself, has plenty to reveal about the tapestry of GC.

Supernatural eye shadow, eh? Maybe.
She wasn't wearing her Gunnerkrigg Purple in the Good Hope flashbacks, but she was wearing it way back on Page 1 and she seems to have been wearing it ever since.
It's been downright iconic to her character, and it seldom seems to run, either.
Still leaves the question of where she got supernatural Maybelline in the forest, since she would still have to reapply it sometimes.

Wonder why she's so tired. I guess that she is tired from the goodbye-party the night before. Coyate knows probably how to organize a good party.

I want to see Kat. I really miss her. I hope she is at least a bit upset, but not too much. It was rather nasty of Annie to just leave so she should not be just okay, but I wouldn't want to see them fighting too much either. But mostly, I just miss Kat.

Wow, Annie looks like she's grown a lot. I see it's going to be an awesome year.
Reynardine's adorable. The first page, I just wanted to give him the biggest hug in the universe. So glad to see him cheer up again. And then on Monday, stuffed toy Reynardine grabs her ass and the magic is broken.

Hahaha, wut. Sorry, no offense, but I cracked a smile when I read that. Should go in the "crazy theories thread."From wikipedia's stibnite article: "Pastes of [stibnite] powder in fat or in other materials have been used since 3000 BC as eye cosmetics in the Middle East and farther afield; in this use, [stibnite] is called kohl." From wikipedia's kohl article: 'Kohl is an ancient eye cosmetic. ... It is also known as ... surma. ... Mothers would apply kohl to their infants' eyes soon after birth. Some did this to "strengthen the child's eyes", and others believed it could prevent the child from being cursed by the evil eye.' She's been seeing psychopomps since age six. She's known about magic for a while. I'm not claiming that Annie knows about the alleged protective powers of the eyeshadow. Maybe Surma told Annie to start wearing it, without telling Annie why. Maybe Surma wore it for protection and Annie just started doing it to copy her mom without knowing its significance. In ch 3, she took off the eyeshadow before going to bed, ended up spending the rest of the chapter attired in this fashion, and was nearly possessed by Reynardine. In ch 8, the eyeshadow was washed off in the river, and she was subsequently attacked by Jeanne. Since coming to Gunnerkrigg, both times that she's spent significant on-screen time without eyeshadow, she was attacked by some supernatural force. Granted, the events of "The Coward Heart" put a crimp in this theory, but if you give me 20 minutes I can fanwank an explanation based on the fact that Annie was out-of-body during that encounter with Jeanne, but in-body during her prior encounter.

This is good. :-) With the way these two parted, and the "and Reynard" afterthought second-hand message on this page, I was worried about their relationship. Sometimes you have a friendship, though, that forgivenesses can happen through a look for a smile, without a word needing to be spoken. This is good. :-)
