Awesome stuff. Annie with her "homework" again (helping Kat? How does Jack NOT see through that?) and pre-teen awkwardness. Also, Mr. Cool blushing. Good stuff.
Annie is at least as embarrassed as Jack here. Her thin excuse is an obvious grab to get out of here, and that fifth panel is a silent "AACK! Red Alert!" She keeps her eternal calm, but you can tell she's feeling rather awkward.
And Jack. Jack is all "Okay, goodbye thing, do I hug her or just wave or... ah. Handshake."
Again, considering Annie's past reactions to relationships, this one is progressing rather well. I AM hoping we do see more of Jack in the future, he's an awesome character, and I'm interested in what these "great ideas" he has are about.

Again (please forgive me for bringing this up yet once more), it should be 13, not 14. Tom's notes on the Bonus Page at the end of the first chapter say that Year 7 covers ages 11-12. Therefore, Year 8 (which is just ending) covers ages 12-13. Unless Tom skipped a year without telling us and Annie, Kat and Jack are in Year 9 now, or unless Tom changed his mind (again without telling anyone) and decided that Year 7 covers ages 12-13, that means Annie and Jack are 13, not 14.

Since we don't know Annie's birthday, its hard to be precise but the story has gone on for 1 1/2 years or so (assuming she got here halfway through the first semester.) She spent 12 years with her mum, came here, and 1 1/2 years have passed...so 13 1/2 sounds close. Edit: She'd just turned 12 when she arrived so 13 and 1/2 is very close.

That's all over the place in this comic, on desks and trees and so forth. I think it's just something Tom doodles, with no real "meaning" beyond it's something he does for the background.

Come to think of it, Jack (if he really is taken with Annie) is the first human boy in the comic to "notice" her. Up until now, the guys who get struck by her were all etheric beings like Mort and Reynardine. But her male classmates never seemed to be attracted to Annie - most likely because, as Residential" suggests, of her weirdness. (And it must have indeed been a heavy aura of weirdness to outweigh her looks.) Now we finally have a case - apparently - of a boy getting interested in her. Whether Annie's interested in him or not is another question altogether. (I still have a hard time imagining Annie in love - but then again, a major element of the comic is her becoming more "normal"....)

Soooo.... three days of awkward conversation and nothing much revealed. Monday better be spectacular. Monday Kat finds out Jack made a play for Annie and she shook his hand... expect a HUGE Katsplosion! But it's not a Katastrophe, right?

I really hope Jack ends up in Annie's "posse". As of now it's her, Kat, Parley, and Smitty. Jack would make five.
I note that Surma's "posse" had six members. Not that there's any reason to think Tom means to do the same for the current generation, but if there's going to be a sixth, who might it be? If we're casting votes, I vote Paz, mostly because she's awesome.

I believe the relevant vernacular here is "Scoobies".

He remembers everything from the time he was taken over by whitelegs.said some pretty mean things to carver. Even if it was not his fault I think he must feel some guilt about it..

I think he should count himself lucky that Annie didn't freak out or laugh at him (not that she would do such a thing). She's actually giving him a pretty face-saving way out.

When Annie first leaves and goes outside there is no reason to assume that she is lying then just because she does later? First she says that she needs to pack more and finish up some homework. Where as when she tells Jack That she's got to help Kat with some homework we know she clearly is lying, but It still doesn't mean that she was lying to Kat and her mom before just that she wanted to leave the awkward situation. If she had just told him that she was going to pack or finish homework he might have offered to help her or something Which she might have been trying to avoid by including Kat in the excuse. I really don't think she had any clue that he would be sitting out there based on her expression when she first steps out and notices him.
Also ya, I don't see him jumping right to any kind of kissing(on the cheek, mouth, or anywhere) from putting his hand on hers and getting rejected like that. I took it as he was probably thinking of trying a hug or at least that he was hoping for some kind of goodbye-I-do-kind-of-like-you thing

I think he should count himself lucky that Annie didn't freak out or laugh at him (not that she would do such a thing). That's the truth. We, as longtime readers of the comic, know that Antimony is level-headed. Thanks to the under-page comment and formspring we know that they have talked since the Spring-Heel chapters but before that Antimony didn't interact much with her classmates. So, Jack's knowledge of her personality should still be limited. He does know that Antimony's mother died and her father has apparently abandoned her. I figure seven out of ten pre-teens in Antimony's circumstances would be basket cases beneath their stoic fronts. Think about it. During a early-phase mack that wasn't going well Jack played the dead mum card on a magic-using ginger with a slaved demon fox under her control. Jack probably meant that to show how sensitive he is but a different personality could have interpreted that very badly regardless of his intentions. I think Antimony chose to be oblivious to Jack's advances because doing so defused the situation so that SHE didn't have to figure out how to react, but it has the added benefit of leaving a clean slate for Jack's next try.

Annie offering a handshake- actually intiating human contact with another person who's not Kat- is huge. Coming from Annie it's like getting a hug from another girl.
He's TOTALLY in, whether or not he or for that matter Annie realises it yet.

I'm such a dork with guys... "

Jack, Jack, don't you understand that the way to get further with her is to express interest in Kat? But given how that one went, i wouldn't expect attempts at an indirect romance to be such a good idea. Monday Kat finds out Jack made a play for Annie and she shook his hand... expect a HUGE Katsplosion! "Thermonuclear Katsplosion"? This is the guy that managed to get to the power station and get it running. Not anymore...
