Jack, Jack, don't you understand that the way to get further with her is to express interest in Kat?

Poor Jack! I'm just happy he got up and took a chance. Even when you fail, the chance is worth taking.
As for Miss "I'll see you next year... perhaps...", she can now go and not do her imaginary homework and work through some of these new details. She choose not to take a chance. I hope this doesn't come back to bite her. She may eventually decide Jack's a pretty cool guy.
I wonder if she'll mention this to Rey.

Well ... it was nice of her to shake his hand. Especially considering that the way he's wearing his heart on his face is probably freaking her out a bit.

So.... it looks as if Jack waited near Annie's dorm so she could see him and come over if she wanted to talk to him. He made himself available but if she choose not to talk to him, it wouldn't be a snub. Its possible that the table is in a place Jack wouldn't normally be found so Annie would get the idea that, since he's there, he probably wanted to talk to her. It may be a common area outside the girls dorm where guests normally wait.
Anyway, it seems Jack set this up from the start. I hope he still tries to win her over, he seems up to a challenge.

The handshake is an underappreciated method of communication. I see that Annie agrees with me on this matter.

Soooo.... three days of awkward conversation and nothing much revealed. Monday better be spectacular. Hey, I think this is an important development. Jack has a bit of a crush on Antimony and she's not sure how to respond, but she's definitely trying to handle it without hurting his feelings. She distanced herself from him after the hand-touching, but on this page she's the one who extends her hand for a goodbye handshake after initially not responding to his apparent attempt to initiate contact in panel four. I'd say that with that, she's trying to establish the appropriate distance between them - i.e. she's saying that they're on hand-shaking terms but not on grateful hand-touching or please-don't-go-arm-touching terms.

I believe that was a preemptive handshake. And at the beginning of this scene, we weren't sure if Jack was attracted to Annie or if he was just being friendly. Today makes it pretty clear, he blushed and looked like he was going in for a kiss... he's attracted to Annie!

"No I do not want to kiss you here have a handshake instead!"
I didn't think he was going that far, but he may well have been. I wish we knew what his face looked like in panel five. XD
EDIT EDIT EDIT: When I went back and looked it definitely seemed possible that that's what he was trying for but ... why? I mean, seriously, I didn't think that Jack was the kind of guy who would try to kiss a girl without encouragement of some kind. Um ... this is going to sound kind of wild, but is it possible that they're going out?

Why was I expecting him to kiss her?
Added note: I'm kind of excited for Annie to go on vacation. I hope we're shown it.

Had she not prevented it, I'd say Jack would try for the ol' "kiss on the cheek and see how that goes" move.

I'm not sure what to make of Annie's face in panel 5. I can decide if it's a standard regulation blank stare, the 'deer in the headlights' look or possibly 'THE HYPNOTOAD' . The mutual awkwardness seems to be about right, though. I'm on the "blank stare" side of the fence, or else she's really mediumgood at covering up her panic while offering to shake hands. The handshake is in panel six, and I'd say it's the only look describable as "blank" on this page. Panels one, two, and five? Subtle, but on Annie's face they speak volumes. But it probably reads as a blank stare to Jack because he doesn't know Annie as well as we do.

It seems more likely, especially from his flushed face, that he was going through the motions of how he thought these things were supposed to go, with no regard to whether the situation was actually working out that way. You know what I mean? Sort of like "well she's leaving, I gotta try to kiss her now!" Well I don't know.

Sounds plausible. I am at a distinct disadvantage when trying to guess what he's doing as I have never been a teenage boy ever in all my days. =/ WHY IS IT NOT MONDAY YET.
Also it would be super awesome if Antimony asked Jack to look after Renard for her. I bet they would get along like houses on fire.

It's possible that he was just trying to go for a hug. I mean, I definitely looks like he's going for a kiss, but a hug would be a lot more appropriate for the situation.

He'd probably think he was inventing them. Its an old move because its a fairly intuitive action. He's not sure how she'd react but she's definitely not giving signals saying "kiss me you fool" Why waste a chance on an almost sure failure. The "kiss on the cheek" has a better chance of not crashing and burning utterly and if that succeeded, he could advance. This is the guy that managed to get to the power station and get it running. He is clever!

Before I read anything else in this topic, I have to say that Panel 5 Annie is hilarious.
Also, the handshake was a crafty maneuver on Annie's part.

I agree, a hug was the first thing I thought of... I agree, a friendly hug. He may be interested in more, but I doubt he'd go for the kiss so quickly, with no other provocation from Annie.

Homework - is there anything it can't excuse? What I don't understand is why they arranged to meet in the first place. Did Jack request it, so he'd have an opportunity to make a pass? If so, all the awkwardness is odd in light of his easy charm in Power Station... Annie seems to have the power to turn even the most charming of adolescent boys into nervous blobs of awkward babble. She will break many hearts in high school, but will be too busy worrying about the newest mystery to notice. ...until they go in for a hug. Then she will shake their hands and hide behind homework. I expect she will then hide away in her room and peek out of the peephole periodically in a cartoonish manner. It will be extremely endearing, and endlessly frustrating for shippers. You can just about tell that Jack is going to be mentally kicking himself for this for about a week. If my experience is anything to go by, this degree of awkwardness is something that might stick with him for the rest of his life, one of those things that occasionally jumps to the forefront of your mind for innocuous reasons, reminding you that you're not as cool as you think you are.

Eh. He managed to get the "you are incorrigible" smirk-glare from her, which in my experience is pure gold. And through clever planning! Jack is a great planner - so if he planned this encounter, it's surprising he didn't do so better. To be fair, Annie was nowhere near as amused by Jack's antics as Kat was, so it's not really all that surprising that his charm fell flat. Annie just has a way of not being charmed.
