[703]What's that we were just saying about Jack acting more sane? At least Rey can keep him in line.

Yes, Jack, there are evil tracking bugs in the food. Here, how about a roll of tinfoil to keep out the mind control beams?

You're doing a great job not sounding crazy, Jack.
Jack doesn't seem completely sure of how the Court is doing so, but does he have any reason besides paranoia to believe that the Court is tracking the students? Perhaps he saw something in the computer network suggesting that they are being tracked.

Okay, it feels like we're taking a few steps into Ender's Shadow.

If I was a member of a clandestine organization that created a school of mysteries where the regular students have it within their power to create anti-gravity units and hover bikes, I would definitely implement tracking somehow. It would most definitely account for why Annie set off the alarms that night she fell off the bridge. Also, Jack's varied expression sorely tempts me to make ad-libs some pages. Attachments:

Jack hasn't thought this out. If the court were tracking people, they'd be bound to know that Annie is in the middle of the lake going out to the power station. They would probably go investigate. That would result in him being found -- in a boat in the center of the lake with nowhere to hide.
Also, for a second I freaked out at the ominous voice coming from the power station in the last panel.
Also, where did that "Ha!" come from? We saw some of them in #289 too. Is it Reynardine chuckling to himself under his breath or something?

He hasn't eaten in days, days during which he built a bridge, ran around leaping out of windows, and rowed another student and her large wolf across a lake? Jack's running on pure crazy at this point. I think that's the only possible explanation. You're doing a great job not sounding crazy, Jack. Jack doesn't seem completely sure of how the Court is doing so, but does he have any reason besides paranoia to believe that the Court is tracking the students? Perhaps he saw something in the computer network suggesting that they are being tracked. I wouldn't be surprised if the students were being tracked, or if some students had trackers on them (keeping track of Zimmy and Gamma despite their tendency to wander, for example) but I doubt they're doing it with food. You'd have to keep replacing the little dots, for one. Clothes would be a more efficient way of doing it, not to mention that it'd be easier to attach a name to a dot ("All right, so Dot 78/C was in a blazer that was handed out to Paz Pazzington, QN...") as opposed to "Yeah so now we've got lots of little dots in the refectory. Uh what do we do now?" I think it's Jack. Rey's not given to raucous laughter (in noble wolf mode) and Annie doesn't laugh much. They got through the first trip fine despite being in close proximity to two people the Court would have every reason to keep an eye on. Maybe the Court's hypothetical tracking people just aren't very good at their job?

Whoa, someone's been listening to too much Coast to Coast AM. Poor kid is further gone than he initially seemed; potentially unstable. He is displaying symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and appears to be approaching the point where he'll have a stress breakdown. I imagine this will probably happen soon. He needs professional care or at least some kind of supportive, safe environment. Moreover, if he is indeed being affected by some kind of paranormal phenomenon from zimmyland (as we've speculated on over the past few months), a fix or treatment for that is necessary also.

Clothes are better for tracking devices than food. Assuming the tracking is done via physical devices, and not "etheric science". It sounds right nuts, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was actually on to something.

Well, looks like Jack's oscillated back into psycho-mode. "There's...things! In the food! Watching us! And plotting their insidious...thing-related plots!"
Also, the Rey-head in panel 5 is strangely hilarious.

Lack of food makes you stupid. Lack of sleep makes you paranoid. Way to go Jack! Assuming the tracking is done via physical devices, and not "etheric science". I doubt it considering how the court feels about etheric science. It's probably some sort of mechanical way.

Frankly, given what the Court is like I wouldn't be surprised if he was telling the truth.
Also this page was hilarious. Jack is my favourite character now.

Whoever mentioned PTSD above nailed it. I'd imagine that Jack's etheric "companion" is inhibiting his sleep. Between that and the nightmare scenario into which he found himself immersed, it's no surprise that Jack is freaking out.
I don't think he's my favorite character. I think he's kind of pitiful at this point. God only knows what he found down in the power station, but I'm sure he wasn't in a good place mentally to handle it.

Jaysis and twelve christs, the boy needs the kind of help accompanied by straitjackets and padded cells!
Seriously, starving oneself is just freaky. Get the boy some stew!

Jack looks ill, but not starving or skeletal, which suggests that his claim not to have eaten for days might be part of his delusional condition.
This page is the closest, incidentally, that any human boy at the Court has come to hitting on Annie (his interrupted suggestion obviously stemmed from his paranoia - but when it's addressed to a pretty girl his own age....). Usually, it's only the etheric beings (Mort, Reynardine, Coyote) who show that kind of interest in her.

I have a strong suspicion, incidentally, that if Reynardine had been in "living stuffed toy" mode rather than "noble white wolf" mode when Jack had made that suggestion, he'd have seconded it. (Or maybe not - by now, Reynardine must have realized that it's not a good idea to say things like that to Annie when she can respond by forbidding him to speak for another week.)

I think Annie was hurt quite badly by Jack's "dad ditched you" on the previous page. What I mean is that Annie rarely cares if someone's in trouble and she seems to make a point quantifying exactly how much trouble Jack is in on panel one.
Edit: Todd I think you're right, Reynardine does act rather fatherly in his full wolf form. Also I think he's probably keenly aware of how quickly stuffed toys sink once they become waterlogged (probably not fatal, but he'd spend a good few days trying to find his way out of that lake.)

They got through the first trip fine despite being in close proximity to two people the Court would have every reason to keep an eye on. Maybe the Court's hypothetical tracking people just aren't very good at their job? Oh please. Much more plausible is to assume that the Court knew full well the kids were sneaking out after dark but didn't care. Remember their policy on rules: if you can break them without getting caught, go right ahead. They're not exactly about to start using technology they want to keep secret from the students in order to bust them.
