Heh, Annie's giving him the cold shoulder. She's not just not talking; she turned her back on him after just stating her name and ran off. I'm guessing it's a somewhat clumsy attempt to stay out of Kat's way. Aly seems distracted by Annie, but not really concerned about her indifference. And he certainly is looking Annie's way in panel 4. Poker faced.

He's definitely planning something in panel 4, but it's not nessecarily Annie-focused.
You know what would suck for our protagonists? If Mort made a door disappear about now. Or came along, saw Annie and Aly together, and got the wrong idea. I dunno why, but I'm predicting copious amounts of Mort this chapter. Mort!

Hey. I'd eyeball Annie too! She's being all distant and cold. I'd be eyeballing her to death. Never trust the quiet friend of the friendly person. That is the rule with being the new kid. The quiet friend hates you. The quiet friend will say all sorts of nasty things as soon as you leave. I've been to a lot of different schools. The quiet friend ALWAYS HATES YOU.

I'm the quiet friend! I don't hate you! I don't hate anybody! Ooookay, goin' to get some zzzzzz's now....

My guess is that Aly is the suicidal fairy. Thus he knows Annie, that's why he's eyeing her strangely!

I don't know that he was specifically watching Annie, but what *is* certain is that, while Kat's looking at Aly, he's looking in the opposite direction from her. Which may not bode well for the crush that she's got on him....
If he *is* looking closely at Annie, it could mean either of two things:
1. That he's connected to one of the strange forces or factions and is spying on her.
2. That he's simply more interested in her than he is in Kat (with poor Kat being as yet unaware of this).
We'll just have to see.

I'm with Neal on this one, actually. When it comes to pretty, unapproachable girls with impeccably-applied make-up, Annie is the exception, not the rule. Also, Gunnerkrigg Court is shambly, purple and apparently endless. I imagine that this sort of atmosphere would inspire shiftiness in all manner of persons who have been so fortunate as to have spent their childhoods in a hospital.
Now I don't trust this Aly character any more than the rest of you, but I'm hoping he uses his charms for good--or better still, for something completely unforeseen. Guys are always being introduced with the express purpose of complicating girls' relationships (Tom from MTV's Daria, I am casting my evil eye at you) and I imagine my wariness towards this new fellow is more a reaction to years worth of conditioning.
It's all rather silly, really. Aly could just as well be like one of those innocuous boys you knew when you were twelve who in no way interfered with your friendships and was generally just a gas to have around.

Panel five: Are they holding hands, or is that a trick of the light?

Panel five: Are they holding hands I doubt it. The lad may not know his way around yet, but I don't think it's necessary for him to be led by the hand.

Bagofholding , I don't think that Aly can be one of Annie's Suicide Faries , quite apart from the gender shift I can't imagine those two would let themselves be separated anymore that Gamma and Zimmy would. Mind you I don't say he couldn't be a Farie. Speaking as a quiet friend myself I'm usually just reserving judgement.

After having seen the page for today again, I'd say that most likely Aly *is* looking at Annie in Panel 4 - though we still don't know why he's doing that.
I've said this before, but a part of me almost wants to see Aly try hitting on Annie the moment that Kat's back is turned just to see her (Annie's) response: it's almost certainly going to be a cold, hard, disapproving stare.

I'd be very impressed with Annie if she managed to get colder than she already is.

I just imagined Reynardine as part of the tour! "And this is Reynardine. He's an ancient and unspeakably evil demon. Isn't he cuuuuuuuute?"

I'd like to see Reynardine's response to being called "cute". It'd probably be one of utter mortification (maybe even worse than when Annie caught him playing "tea party" with Kat's action figures).

Checking that archived page, I noticed that Reynardine's speech balloon was the same color in it (a yellowish-tan) as Alistair's speech balloon. Could there be some dark significance here?

Not sure how precise Tom is with the speech balloon colours, but Reynardine's in that strip is slightly lighter than Aly's.
