So he's some sort of visiting student I guess. I don't like that look he's got in panel 2. He looks like a player. Kat seems smitten. If he hurts her I will be very upset with him. (I always feel kind of uncomfortable posting before the main site updates, so here's another reminder for those who don't know - the Drunk Duck site updates at 11:00pm Mountain time) www.drunkduck.com/Gunnerkrigg_Court/

I'm curious as to why Annie interrupted Kat to give her full name. Presumably she doesn't think that Alistair/Aly is a close enough acquaintance yet for the nickname to be appropriate.
I'd also like to see how Annie responds towards Kat's crush on Aly, once she notices it (I don't know if she has or not).
Note that Mrs. Donlan didn't make one comment about Aly being out of uniform. I wonder why that was. Another mystery to be solved.

I'm guessing he doesn't even have a uniform because he'll only be around for a week.

So... Classes only last ten minutes? Or is that 70? Ten seems really short, but then an hour and ten seems way long to keep the attention of such young persons. Interesting dynamic, here. I liked, by the way, the very subtle expression on this Aly kid yesterday when he was smiling at Kat. Not grinning, just... smiling.

On the frontpage comments, Tom explained: "Morning registration usually lasts about 10 minutes." I had a bit of trouble figuring out just how the thing with form and registration works (I'm dutch; over here we had maybe one period a week of that, called a mentor hour), but reading the UK and US parts of this article helps: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeroom

I never got the point of morning registration. I mean, I get the point of it, just not why it should take more than two minutes. I have been grateful for it though, especially when I'm ten minutes late; then it allows me to get to my first class on time. So yeah, basically what it is, you just sit around for ten minutes, the form teacher checks you're there and gives out information if there is any. Like introducing new students.
Also, Boksha, is it really better to have the lights on? I just find it annoying.

Also, Boksha, is it really better to have the lights on? I just find it annoying. Personally I prefer a more dimly lit room as well. Also I don't think it's ever proven that watching in a bright room from a distance is better. The reason I have that signature is because that text appears on-screen in a lot of anime shows. Some comedy series even make a habit of including the message in some funny sequence at the beginning. (originally I thought I'd put the original japanese text on but that'd probably give the impression I know anything about japanese, which I really don't... also apparently this board doesn't support unicode characters )

I'd personally say it was registration--mine was longer than ten minutes to give the tutor time to not only register pupils but do notices too.
I'm a little surprised at Annie though, she was new not so long ago but she's been fairly cool with Aly here. Maybe she gets a bad feeling 'bout him ...

Though it's possible she does more socializing "off-screen", so to speak, the closest we've ever seen Antimony come to interacting with a boy her own age would probably be judo-flipping Winsbury. Unless you want to count Mort, I guess. It would be funny, if unlikely, if she was unsure how to proceed, despite being level-headed in the face of all sorts of other things.
But they've only just introduced themselves, it's too early to tell how Antimony feels. Besides, this chapter is supposed to be all about Kat, I wouldn't be surprised if Carver fades into the background for a bit.

Y'know, just because Kat gets a boyfriend or Antimony knows a boy her age doesn't mean there has to be unusual goings-on.
I once had a girlfriend named Ali (pronounced al-ee).

Annie does generally seem to be socially awkward, or at least very stiff and formal, with everyone but Kat. But then she does mostly meet mythical monsters, demons and other unconventional types.

In order to fit in with my crackpot theories, this boy would have to be a spy/saboteur from the forest aided by the Donlans. I'm assuming Anja made the magical disguise.
Non-crackpot thoughts: why would he join them for only a week? He wouldn't be able to learn anything useful in just that amount of time. Maybe he's a prospective student and wants to have a look at how life in the Court goes before comitting himself? It's the only non-loony explanation I can come up with.

He could be an exchange student, but then I thought they were usuallu attatched to current students ... But if he was it gives us the most interesting question of, which school has he originally come from? ('Least I think that's interesting.)

It is interesting! Perhaps he is visiting from the Gillitie Wood School of the Paranormal. He is actually a star student in their Body Possession and Soul Stealing program. His hair is spun from the dreams of his victims. No, seriously, I wonder if he is here because his parents have some hush-hush business in the Court.

I dunno, we get kids occasionally who attend my school for brief periods. There are several schools in the immediate area, so kids often spend some time at each to figure out where they would like to attend when they move into the area. However, I'm doubting that it would be so frequent in an rea with less turnover than Hawaii. People move here and then leave very frequently, so there are always plenty of new kids.

That's neat. Where I grew up (not Colorado), we didn't really have a choice unless our parents paid to send us to private schooling. I always thought that sucked.

In light of mrw's earlier "player" comment about the new boy, I find myself wondering if he'll try putting the moves on Antimony when Kat's back is turned.
In fact, a part of me almost hopes that he'll do this, simply so that we can see Annie's response. Knowing her, it would definitely be a look of sharp disapproval over his being so ready to trifle with the affections of her best friend.
