The first humans came to Gillitie wood in the early 1800's or late 1700's, an AWOL portion of (perhaps) some form of the French Foreign Legion, or the scattered remains of a large battle. The animals of the forest helped them survive, and they coexisted peacefully. As the humans started to settle in, they became dissatisfied with the way the animals were running things (or more likely just letting things happen.) Using the Seed Bismouth (perhaps a book or constitution) they founded the court and it's ideals, segregating themselves more from the forest. Rey and Ysengrin find the court, Rey empathizing with the humans (Jeanne specifically), and Ysengrin with the forest. A war ensued, led by Ysengrin and Young. At some point Rey (a trickster) betrays the humans (perhaps calling on his cousin Coyote's shadow men), the results of which most of the human inhabitants were wiped out, and would have been wiped out completely had Coyote not shown interest and created the Annan Waters. The waters were not completely impassable though. The humans needed a way to protect their side from aetheric beings who could fly and etc. Young devised a plan where a human warrior must be made into an aetheric being to defend the Court from other aetheric beings. Diego built an arrow using aetheric technology to bind Jeanne's soul to the Annan Waters. The creatures of the forest create the tic tocs, under the command of coyote, to spy on the court and to help protect their side of the river. The humans build the bridge to give them access to the forest keeping it fortified against the shadow men. The bridge is used for diplomacy by use of mediums.
Years later:
Surma is trained by "B" as the court medium. In her training she crosses the bridge and meets Rey who falls in love. Rey asks Coyote for the means to prevent what happened with Jeanne from happening to Surma. Coyote grants him the power to move through other bodies, though Rey is not skilled enough to do so without leaving the body dead. Rey takes the body of "B" and tries to woo Surma. Surma does not fall for it, and Rey is hunted until he is caught in Sivo's body. The hunt ends the impartiality of those involved which disqualifies them from certain roles.
Rationalizations:
military founders - the titles are such like 'archer' 'artilleryman' etc. They have at least 3 different national accents. (as seen in Chapter 25). The clothing styles and weapons suggest a time period.
CH 20 coyote says rey and ysengrin were bringing 'joy and misery' to humans. at the court he found the squabble. He says the humans made the waters impassable and built a bridge they could control.
Seed Bismouth - Bismouth is an element used to create complex alloys. The alchemical representation is the Ox, as is seen all over the court. The court is founded on knowledge and technology, which stands to reason the Seed Bismoth is a book of some sort.
signs there was a fighting war between the forest and the court - war horses, a vast complex without inhabitants, 'traitor' from ch 25
Annan Waters - coyote said the waters were changed. Jeanne's sword affected Antimony's aetheric manifestation.
Tic tocs - the robots say the tic tocs were not created by Diego. A treatise shows both a mechanical guardian and an aetheric guardian on the Annan waters. As the aetheric guardian was created by the humans, the mechanical guardian must logically be created by the forest creatures.
"S+B" is carved into one of the trees, and suggests Surma + B = Antimony. Rey woos Surma so it is reasonable Rey is "B" in human form. When he is discovered he leaves the body dead committing a crime. The hunt for Rey would leave all the adults disqualified for mediation as can be seen in Surma being no use to the psychopomps, Anja's time having passed, and Jones passing responsibility to Antimony.
Alternate Theory: regarding "B" - "B" is Anthony's first or middle initial, or a pet name given to him by Surma. Anthony is known for 'wandering off' and is familiar with the woods. It is Anthony who is possessed by Rey to woo Surma. When Rey is found out he keeps Anthony from dying by leaving a portion of himself in him, perhaps supported by Surma putting some of herself in him too, the cause of Surma's untimely death. Anthony wanders off near the time Antimony meets Rey and would not be seen again for 2 years.
I didn't include detailed references but by my understanding I feel this is how things fit together.
