Hello, I'm new to the forums, but not quite new to the comic. I must say this web comic is absolutely amazing. It is amazing how the art form has improved from the start. The story is awesome, along with the characters, artwork, and the fact that it updates THREE times a week. Although i must admit, i was not very impressed when i first started reading this comic, i thought it was a bit strange. BUT i was pulled in upon further reading. One question i have is that most of the characters are reoccurring characters except for Basil or this dude www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=27Whats up with that he needs some love as well. Of all the web comics i follow this is among the best with the list going 1. Gunnerkrigg Court2.Dead Winter 3.Dr.Mcninja 4.Questionable Content and etc. I expect myself to stick with this comic for a very long time.

y helo thar! Always good to have a new member to add to the chaos discussion. Yes, one of the highest marks I give this comic is that it has a schedule and it actually sticks to it. I know webcomics are free and I can't make demands of the artists unless I'm paying them, but it's nice that a few actually update at a quick rate and when they say they will. Just so you know, there is an introductory thread (that should really be stickied). Anyways, I believe Tom has said that Basil may make a return appearance later on. As for the unnamed teacher, I believe Tom said he's nobody important and he would write him out if he could do that chapter over. Oh well.

Welcome to the boards, odyseus.
And I'm guessing that Tom isn't stickying the introductory thread because doing so might make it look like a requirement or an official suggestion on his behalf, which it really REALLY isn't. I've never posted to the introductory thread, and I would probably have never posted to the forum at all if I felt I had to post in that thread first.

I'm very glad that GKC comes up on your list higher than QC. So I'll welcome you to the forums with a hardy handshake. ;D And I'm guessing that Tom isn't stickying the introductory thread because doing so might make it look like a requirement or an official suggestion on his behalf, which it really REALLY isn't. I've never posted to the introductory thread, and I would probably have never posted to the forum at all if I felt I had to post in that thread first. I agree with this. Both in the idea of why the thread's not stickied, and also because I don't really do introductory threads. They seem so perfunctory no matter how much people try to put in their posts there. Other things tend to build a greater sense of community. That's me, though, and I understand I deviate from the norm on many points.

I find it difficult to imagine Basil returning; he didn't seem to have much story potential beyond the revisionist take on the Theseus legend, and I suspect that's why Tom hasn't showed him again since Chapter Two.

Thanks for the warm welcom guys. No i have not met Ulysses, and for those of you about to say "HE SPELT IT WRONG" I know, i do that on purpose its my callname for alot of things and to spell it differently would mess things up. Well, yea i get that he wouldnt fit in somewhere, but maybe they could all have a party and he could be there. Or a cameo, that would be funny.

I am sure the forum would explode with "I caught it I saw that oooh whatever does it mean?" if Basil was to appear walking around in the background of one page or something, however it would indeed be funny.

The idea of Basil coming back is an interesting one, considering he's a myth/magic type of creature who lives in the court rather then the forest. He doesn't seem to quite fit in to what we consider as court-dwellers. But I generally think of Chapter 2 as being the introduction to the importance of real-world mythology in this comic (using the highly recognizable minotaur) as well as introducing the Kat/Annie duo, rather then attributing to the overall story-arc itself. So, I would be satisfied either way, weather or not Basil makes a future appearance.

I've sometimes wondered whether part of Basil's role was a subtle preparation for Chapter Three. Basil's story took a familiar tale about a monster and a hero and made the monster the good guy and the hero the bad guy. In "Reynardine", we're presented with another monster-and-hero pair, and Annie believes that the Rogat Orjak is an innocent and the Dragon Slayer a bullying persecutor - then discovers the truth in an extremely alarming way. Could some of Basil's function be to help prepare the audience for Annie's mistaken assumption, so that we would share in her assessment of the situation, and her shock when Reynardine attempts to possess her? We don't know for certain, but it's an intriguing speculation.

Keep in mind that the Court Labyrinth is just a time share and Basil does not live there year-round.

Gunnerkrigg Court is a school, so you'd expect quite a lot of even minor characters to be recurring. Sure, the top class leaves (probably mostly for good) at the end of each school year, but our two main characters wouldn't yet be interacting much with most of the top class. That will really start to be common when they are in the next-to-top class, which is probably at least four story years away yet.
Non-recurring minor characters (not including those whose first appearance is so recent we can't really call them non-recurring yet) I can think of offhand: Basil, some of the robots including the barber-bot, Aly and his parents, the psychopomps other than Ketrik and Muut, a few teachers including the first one we met, some of the people in the hospital including Martin.
