For those of you who do not know, voting is up for the Webcomics Readers Choice Awards! Gunnerkrigg is up in a few couple of categories, including namely writing and best supporting character (Reynardine). So shoo! Off with you! Check out the competition and vote for whomever you think deserves it, be it Gunnerkrigg or not! As an aside (and a shameless bit of promotion), if you don't already have a favorite in the "best new webcomic" category, I highly recommend you check out Dovecote Crest and see if it strikes your fancy. It's absolutely nothing like Gunnerkrigg, down to the color scheme, but they share equal space in my heart as my favorite webcomics ever.

I wonder who picks the nominees for the categories... I really think Gunnerkrigg Court should have been an option for a LOT more.

I really think that Lackadaisy should be doing better.
Edit: Some of the nominees are kind of not good.
Edit Edit: Some of the nominees are crap sandwiches, hold the bread. Maybe a better nomination process could have narrowed down these choices, rather than have us wade through a bunch of garbage to find the good bits?

... Yeah, I honestly do not want to read most of those comics so I can vote fairly, which I can't if I don't.
(I also fail to see how Lackadaisy isn't numero uno on art! I took a gander at some of the other top comics for art and even if I preferred color significantly, I'd still say it's first or second.)

Apparently not for ...... Artist Congeniality Why ever not???

I want to know why Artist Congeniality is even on there.
How does how much you suck up to your audience count towards the quality of your comic?
Edit: So I hope Tom wins best Writing, but it looks like the majority of voters so far are teenage girls.
Double Edit: Why is there no Templar, AZ or Freakangels there? I see one or two crappy "Sunday Funnies" type strips that could have gotten bumped for writing that passed the Jurassic era. Then I'd actually have to decide who to vote for with a bit more deliberation.

Because some people decided they wanted to reward it?
I think it's probably unfair to call "congeniality" as "sucking up".

GC gets my vote for best writing, but Hannelore from Questionable Content is 65% of the reason I read that comic. Sorry, Rey.

So I hope Tom wins best Writing, but it looks like the majority of voters so far are teenage girls. Hey! I resent that! At the time, The Dreamer was on top (at this point, it and GKC are tied) and I started reading that comic and got a very serious "Teen Girl Demographic" from it. It's not a slight, really, just an observation. Nothing wrong with the demographic or the media behind it. It just means things I like are less likely to win. That's not to say that GKC has zero teen girl demographic. The Dreamer had me skimming word balloons within the first cafeteria scene.

Given who the lead characters are (though I'm not certain that Annie and Kat are fully teenagers yet), it would be appropriate if Gunnerkrigg Court had some teenaged girls among its readers.

You underestimate us. We teenage girls can be just as big fantasy/sci-fi nerds as you guys. I read the Dreamer, and yes, that is partly due to some amount of Nathan Hale-triggered hormones, but also partly because I'm a history dork. Hormones don't run everything in our heads. While it is true that some part of being a teenage girl involves an obsession with boys and/or gossip, it doesn't have to be everything, or even a majority. I gave up on Smallville precisely because the hormones and highschool drama were too much to watch without gagging. Tons of girls are obsessed with playing sports. Gunnerkrigg doesn't need to have teenage girls or whatnot in it for teenage girls to enjoy it, because a) girls often enjoy reading the same sci-fi or fantasy stuff guys do, and b) Gunnerkrigg is an excellent comic. Its appeal and its target demographic aren't gender based. [end of overreactive rant]
Of course, it goes the other way, too. My brother, who reads Batman, the Leatherstocking Tales and Horatio Hornblower harbors a love for the incredibly teen-girl targeted House of Night novels, as well as a show about three girls who become mermaids that's meant for Hannah Montana types. Being a guy doesn't limit you to reading about football and fighting and other testosterone related stuff.

And I like some chick flicks, but exceptions don't disprove generalities.
Also, your rant is sort of on the other end of the spectrum of the point tyler and todd were making. Point B you made is exactly why they were saying the GKC vote was at a disadvantage given the apparent voter base and their general preferences.

Apparently not for ...... Artist Congeniality Why ever not??? My thoughts exactly! You should be running circles around the others in that category. You should also be winning many others, clearly this competition hasn't been thought through very well

Wait... sarcasm doesn't mix well with sincere approbation...
...even if you happen to like Tom's peculiar brand of "artist congeniality."

I do, it keeps people sensible and polite. Certainly it's not conventional, but it works. The more pressing concern, however, is 'why not Art?'. Tom is clearly a fantastic artist; the whole thing is a farce.

I have never even heard of The Dreamer and it was nominated for 6 awards? I should check it out I guess?
Also how is Dr Mcninja not winning the protagonist? He is a doctor who is also a ninja. Come on.
The whole thing does seem a little silly, but I did vote for Gunnerkrigg for writing because seriously this comic has much more depth than a great deal of the novels I have read and has helped me to take the medium of comics/graphic novels far more seriously than I used to.

I think there should be a poll of polls, where people can vote on which poll is worth listening to.

Point B you made is exactly why they were saying the GKC vote was at a disadvantage given the apparent voter base and their general preferences. Actually, I didn't make that point at all (though Tyler might have done so); I was simply commenting, when someone else brought up the "teenage girls", that Annie and Kat (the main characters) are almost in that category. (I don't know if they've officially hit adolescence yet - and I'd rather not ask Tom about it. I don't think it would be a gentlemanly question.) (Kat's interested in boys, yes, but also in advanced technology. I'll be amazed if we *ever* see Annie interested in boys.)

Looking back, my rant seems rather baseless. It's times like these that you're glad the internet is anonymous. I completely forgot that Kat herself runs rings aroud everyone else when it comes to techno wizardry. This is what happens after you binge read up on feminism, kids. You become hypersensitive and start seeing negative female stereotypes everywhere, and then you can't not rant. Not that feminism is bad. You just shouldn't overdose.

Your rant wasn't baseless, Wynne! Overdosing on feminism is something more people need to do. Being hypersensitive is much better than ignoring things, anyway.

Not only has GC not been nominated in enough categories, there's also no mention whatsoever of Penny & Aggie or Hark! A Vagrant. Fail.

Overdosing on feminism is something more people need to do. Ha ha! I'm gonna go with ... "no." Yeah, no Penny & Aggie, but they did have Girl Genius and Looking for Group -- not to mention GKC -- so the template seemed fair enough to me. I just didn't have time to go look at all those other dinky comics in a category for giving an informed vote.
