I created a favicon for Gunnerkrigg Court, for myself - I thought I'd share it, in case anyone else wanted a copy. A Favicon is the little icon used by browsers for favourites and in tabs and addresses; see here for info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FaviconThis what it looks like: and this is it in firefox: Icon available here: www.dflock.co.uk/misc/Gunnerkrigg%20Court.icoCheers, Dunc

Forgot to mention: If people want to use this themselves they'll need a firefox extension to set the favicon: addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3176/Or, if you're using Opera, you can save the .ico file into this folder: %APPDATA%\Opera\Opera\profile\images\eg C:\Documents and Settings\Dunc\Application Data\Opera\Opera\profile\images\In order for it to show up on the website so everyone can see it, Tom would need to add a line of code to the page headers: <link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://gunnerkrigg.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon"> HTH, Dunc

Thanks for that, dflock. I added the icon and code to the site but it isn't showing up yet on my computer.

Cool. I checked the code on the site and it's correct - but it's in the wrong place.
It should be in the <head></head> section somewhere, like this:
<head> ... <link rel="shortcut icon" ... ... </head>
Just needs moving up a few lines.
Cheers, Dunc

It was in the wrong place on the archive pages thanks to my hasty copy pasting, but it was in the right place on the index page. And now I fixed it for the archives and it still isn't showing up.

You're probably using Internet Explorer 6 instead of a real web browser then! I've removed all my local versions and cleared chaches, etc... The icon from the site now works fine in all modern browsers (Opera 9, IE7, Firefox 2). To get this to work in IE6 you'll need to make a (new) bookmark for the site. Then visit the site via the bookmark, at least once. You should now see the icon in the bookmark and in the address bar. I've tested this on my IE6 Virtual Machine, and it works fine. Dunc

Oh - and you've got a tiny typo in the code on the main index page. It's currently like this:
<link ref-"shortcut icon" ...
and it should be like this:
<link rel="shortcut icon" ...

Hum. I couldn't get it to appear for Firefox, but when I used IE to look at the page it appeared for both browsers.
Unfortunately, the bookmark I have for the page doesn't have the Icon next to the text. It's still the default white page.

Ben - delete the old bookmark and create a new one.

Curious. That ought've worked, but the situation remains the same.

Hmm. I expect this is a caching issue and will eventually resolve itself. Maybe you could empty your browser caches, history etc.., reload the site, then re-create the bookmark - if it's bothering you. That _really_ ought to sort it. If that doesn't work, then I dunno.

for what it's worth, it's working fine for me (firefox, no reloading or cahche clearing or anything). Good kind.
