So... you're interested in the Gunnerkrigg Court Fan Project but you're not sure where to start? The idea seems great but you're overwhelmed by the amount of information? Then you've come to the right place! Here you will find a general description of the project and its process, with links to where you can find more information on certain topics.
Remember, if you ever have a question that you don't see covered in the links below, you can post in the General Project Questions thread and someone should help you out!
What is the Project?
The aim of the Project is to present Tom Siddell's work, Gunnerkrigg Court, in an audiobook/slideshow movie format. The ultimate goal is to produce an audio track, with vocals, sound effects, and music, and then set each panel of the comic to the audio track to create a multimedia experience.
How is this being accomplished?
Currently there are four divisions of labor to create the project. The overwhelmingly major part is the creating of the vocal track. Most of the activity on this board is devoted to this aspect; therefore I will go into greater detail about this in a moment.
The other three aspects are the Sound Effects being led by Nikita, the Music being led by Sandjosieph, and Visuals being led by Ulysses. If you are interested in learning more about any of these aspects, or participating, they would welcome your post in the threads I linked here.
Can you tell me more about the voice acting?
The Vocal Production is being led by me. I'm also serving as Director and lead Producer. Vocal parts are being chosen, however, by a peer vote of fellow GC fans. The process of vocal production, which is already underway but still ongoing in all aspects, is as follows:
1) All the vocal parts throughout the comic are broken down into roles and assembled into a master list. This has, for the most part, already been done by me, but as new chapters come out and new characters are introduced, I will continue to do this. The list can be found at this link, which also acts as the hub for most other vocal casting and prep work, as we will see shortly.
2) Auditions are submitted, again at this same link, for any and all parts that have not already been chosen. The breakdown (industry term for the list of characters in a production) will reflect which parts are chosen, and which are open. When there is an upcoming closing date for submissions for a particular chapter, it will be clearly announced in several places.
3) At such time as it is time for the fans to vote for their favorite audition, it will be posted for your consideration at this thread. Instructions are there, and the voting typically lasts a week.
4) Once parts are chosen by voting, they will be announced in the Voting thread as well as being posted permanently in the Vocal Audition thread. Actors then report to the Vocal Production Thread to learn what they need to know about how to get on board with the running production.
Uh, that's great... so what happens next?
After all the vocal parts have been rehearsed, recorded, and submitted to me, and I have edited, balanced, and refined them, the lines are assembled into a fundamental audio track. I then work with Nikita to add the non-spoken sound effects to the audio, and then Sandjosieph adds the musical score.
Well... this part is in theory anyway. As of the time of this write-up, we're still in vocal production for Chapters 1-4. I'll update this post if our process varies at all from the above.
Further, once the audio track is completely done, it is (read: will be) handed over to Ulysses to add in the panels clipped from the comic and strung into a chapter-long movie file.
This all sounds very awesome... How can I get involved?
Pretty much all the needed links are provided in this post. There are other threads on this board that contain other information, like how to get the most out of your vocal performance, etc... but these are typically linked from within the other threads that I have already linked within this post.
And as always, if you should have a question and simply cannot find the answer, feel free to post to the General Questions thread linked at the head of this post, or drop me a PM!
