I wonder if Kat's seeing what we're seeing or if she's getting a different overlay. Renard does look kinda cute and toonish, I guess, but I don't see anything different with Antimony. Anyone else having trouble using Proboards tonight? I've been getting "no healthy upstream" and "upstream connect error or disconnect/reset before headers. retried and the latest reset reason: connection failure" messages. It may just mean the mesh in my interwebbing is soiled, but I don't think so because everything else is working. |

On the previous page, Kat made contact with Robot and was able to talk to him, but he appeared as a floating pink bismuth-crystal shape, while she appeared as a gray cube, becoming distracted by a distant light that turned out to be Annie and Renard. Kat seems to have manifested herself in the Ether with a gray cube as her avatar. Today, becoming distracted from Robot, she has approached Annie and Renard, who can see her (as a cube). They look at this cube in surprise and confusion, with Renard's usual "What the devil..." (also Tom's comment on this page). But Kat's voice comes from the cube, calling them by name and stating that she can see them, and that they look cute. Still looking surprised, Annie and Renard continue staring at the cube, with Annie asking Kat why she's a cube.
Can Kat change her Ether avatar? Maybe she can be a little 8-bit video-game version of herself? I don't know how much detail she can push through this interface, which seems to be going through Robot in some way.
Can Robot see and hear this? Kat seems to have gotten distracted from him on this page.
Then there's the question of whether Omega can listen in. Can she? I think this has to do with whether she can interpret the signals within Kat's implant and between the implant and her brain, but I think that's unlikely. She can certainly tell whether data is flowing there, but my guess is that she can't decode that data by herself in real time, any more than you or I could read a string of 1s and 0s and decode it mentally in real time. There's also the question of whether Kat "sees" and "hears" via those signals or whether the black eyes she gets are actually some kind of screens, because if the data is turned into sensory data, Omega can eavesdrop on it. On the other hand, Kat's black eyes may be non-diegetic like Zimmy's black eyes or Don's expressive glasses; they may be Tom's way of telling us that Kat's remotely accessing tech, while other characters don't actually see Kat with black eyes. A plot point is currently dependent on whether an art element is diegetic or not. I Guess We'll See (tm).

Except for the Uzumaki spiral hair... Anyone else having trouble using Proboards tonight? It may just mean the mesh in my interwebbing is soiled, but I don't think so because everything else is working. Not specifically now, but it's happened several times in the past week and a half, and a down-or-not service identified it as down for everyone on one of these occasions, so not just us. |

Ah. The previous page makes a lot more sense now. Kat was talking to herself (or at least we couldn't hear Robot's speech bubbles), and she seems to have built an Ether interface using Robot.
I would hope that she would be smart enough to have some character customization, like she did with the robots choosing NPC bodies. Maybe we'll even see some chibi Kat avatars.
I just noticed that the Kat Cube has sweat lines, or something along those lines, so she's already more than just a static image.

Now that I think about it, I feel like this is an important turning point for Kat's robo-goddess persona, apart from how significant it is for her to interface with the ether like this in the first place.
Obviously the theoretical Kats in other timelines wouldn't be placed in this situation with the distortion and/or be given the idea to use it to interface with the ether, so they would be stuck being represented as her scary rusted metal self that the forces of robot-worship and its etheric energies foisted upon her by default. But our Kat, having turned away from "that road", may finally be able to shed that form and create her own etheric identity, especially if she can (and I bet she could) further iterate on her cube avatar to her own liking.
