As ye sow so shall ye reap. That's pretty cool. If Kat can figure out how to do that outside of a distortion she could make a bundle marketing it... maybe make something cross between a chia pet and a party popper. I wonder if the "USB seed" comment is a joke or no. If serious, she could make a chia pet that could tendril all your devices.

But is it plug-and-play?

It seems to automatically connect to all nearby devices, so I guess yes.

I feel like a lot of visual attention has been drawn this chapter to the chip that hard-links Kat to the computer system that vine is currently attempting to interface.
Does anyone else feel like a lot of visual attention has been drawn this chapter to the chip that hard-links Kat to the computer system that vine is currently attempting to interface?

Following Bugsy's suggestion, Kat has taken some seeds back to her lab and planted them in a pot, having apparently filled the pot with dirt and watered them. As Annie, Renard, Shadow, and Robot look on, Kat's apparently ready to wait for the usual amount of time it takes for seeds to sprout.
But that's not what happens. The seeds sprout immediately, growing into tendrils that look just like the ones that were entangling the Foley students. They seem to immediately seek out nearby electronic devices and attach themselves to them. As Kat stares in wide-eyed surprise, Annie asks her if this is okay. Tom's comment is "USB Seed," probably a pun on "USB C."
Well, my previous theory that the tendrils represented the agreement the students had with the Court, of doing work in exchange for a name, may need some revision. Kat hasn't agreed to anything, and the tendrils aren't attaching themselves to any people, just devices. But the tendrils represent something; is it some kind of more general connection with the Court? I suppose the Foley students were doing math that was necessary for the creation/operation of the star ocean. I suppose the tendrils could represent the star ocean's need for Ether. Will they try to attach to Robot? What happens if one of the New People wanders in?

plant-plug-and-play It's not just any USB seed, it's an automatic boot on startup, self-inserting USB seed with universal compatibility.

Gnarly happenings, dudes Imagine if they started up a weed farm in the distortion "Every time I plant a seed, He say kill it before it grow ... he say kill it before they grow." = Seriously though, these fast-growing weeds are giving me creepy Audrey 2 vibes. Like they won't eat people, but they can try to connect them.

well the robots' CPUs had taken root and generated plants, now in hindsight it makes sense the seeds would be something computer related

I'm sure she's put all sorts of failsafe protocols in place and at worst spends the next chapter sorting her conflicting protocols out (again). There may even be an upside as she learns new ways to connect devices to each other and to people semi-metaphorically. We might get an end-of-chapter cliffhanger where Kat looks like she's in danger, though.

Oh, literal seeds... I interpreted the previous page as a joke about Bugsy thinking that planting seeds was arcane knowledge that Antimony and Kat would never have thought of.

But when it goes wrong, she comes up with an update that deals with that. When Kat first bootstraped her neck interface, she was locked out with no way to login again. Paz and Annie hat to help. It seems just logical that she fixed that, and now her interface must have some kind of sandbox* to prevent this kind of "buffer overflow". *Sandbox is real IT jargon. [EDIT] Yes, it is possible that Tom would choose otherwise, and Kat will be in reeeeeeal trouble. It is a valid plot point and a helluva good one. I would be pleased both ways: prepared Kat and impulsive careless Kat.
