I'm guessing that for the story's sake Bugsy will start to give out names. I don't know that Tom would bring it up because it would bog the storytelling down, but Bugsy could easily view the Court's actions as breach of contract, thus freeing her from any constraints.

Right now, Bugsy looks reluctant to accept the responsibility.
But if she can just start naming people randomly from a list, it does seem like the fairies got a bad deal from the Court. I wonder if that will sink in....

We have no proof of that. Just the opposite, really, since Red named Ayilu. It may be that they can't name each other in the Forest, but we do know that, in the Court, a fairy with a name can give a name to another fairy. |

Ah, but Bugsey is not a fairy anymore. She's an official court employee with a name of her own. It sounds like the sort of twist that would work, but that they'd never think of on their own. |

Stopping Annie from giving any more names to the Foley students, Kat explains to her that naming is just not her forte. She tries to materialize a book of names, but as we recall, her matter transporter doesn't work too well in the distortion, transporting things piecemeal. So she gets a scattered blizzard of pages, but it seems that most of them are still there, so she gathers them up and gives them to Bugsy. She explains to Bugsy that she just has to pick a random name and give one to each student. Bugsy's confused, but Annie then tells her that she has the power to do it herself. Uhm. For one thing, Kat calls her "Miss," and Annie calls her "Ms. Bugsy." Remember that her name is just Bugsy, and she doesn't know who "Miss" or "Ms. Bugsy" are (to her, those are other people's names). That's going to cause her the usual confusion. For another thing, they're going to get random names, so we'll have boys with names that sound to other people like girls' names and vice versa. But oh well, they'll still be better than "Brown-Haired Boy." But also, is Annie doing something bad by telling Bugsy that she now has the power to give people names? Will she try to rename people who already have names? What kind of chaos could that cause? One year later: Final Boss Bugsy has gone mad with power and given everything and everyone all the names in the book, so names now have no meaning anymore, and effectively nobody has a name now! |
