And herein we enter a 113-page naming Montage as Annie deliberately breaks the golden rule of never naming every background character

Well I'm sure that's the main reason why Annie shouldn't have children. Can't think of any other reason really.

What name did she give him, I wonder? A better one than Bugsy, I hope. I think he looks like a Steven. Maybe a David. Anyway, I did say before that Annie could fix this with a mass naming binge. Let's hope she comes up with good ones. Also, I hope she explains nicknames, because Steven/David might be confused if people call him Steve/Dave. Well, so much for that. One would think that being a few years older Annie would have gotten better at thinking up names.

I love that Annie really is long established to be terrible at naming others, and now she finds herself in a desperate situation for which she really is the least qualified person, in a very funny way.

Annie, who has given the brown-haired boy a name, explains her reasoning, and it seems sound. Giving him a name has released him from the tendrils, which may be a distortion-fueled symbol of the deal or obligation the students had. Bugsy had no tendrils, because she'd already discharged her obligation and received her reward. Bugsy is still working through this mentally. The boy thanks Annie for giving him the name ... Brown-Haired Boy.
And then ... comedy. Annie now looks forward to naming all the rest of the students. Robopillar, Shadow, Kat, and Renard all object. Well, presumably Robopillar objects. He can't talk. But Tom calls our attention to the fact that Annie's terrible at naming people, naming a robot "Robot" and naming a shadow person "Shadow 2." Tom's comment: "Hold your horses, Annie."
I don't know whether Shadow can access the Ether, and Kat certainly can't, but Renard can, so perhaps the three of them can come up with names for each of them, Renard can relay them to Annie, and Annie can give them their names, so they end up with normal names they can use in the human world without objections. I wonder if they can give Brown-Haired Boy a new name? Maybe Bob for short?
Anyway, what happens after they name and therefore release all the students? Kat has the data they produced, although it's in the form of seeds, but her computer is half plants and still works, so maybe it's actually able to read the seeds. What will this data tell her? The secret to the star ocean and its etheric technology? How does technology build a bridge to the Ether? It might go back to where it all began, with the Seed Bismuth. What if Kat discovers the key to the Seed Bismuth from this data?

Antimony looks so pleased with herself, too. Well, at least she's not giving one-syllable color names anymore. Mr. Boy has a first, middle, and surname. Sounds more like a superhero sidekick name, to be honest EDIT: Especially his arms out, leg-up hero stance. The Adventures of Fire Head Girl and Brown Haired Boy! Never noticed this before, but Annie's method is a bit like how my mom names cats. (Blackie, Little One, etc.). It makes sense if she's feels like she needs to hurry up and rescue them.

"You can't just name people willy-nilly!" "But I just did. Meet Willy Nilly." This joke name is starting to sound like an actual possibility. Was not expecting Kat to be the one to object. But there's still a chance that Bugsy complains on Wednesday. Unless she's OK with line-of-sight names as long as they follow the rules.

The first of them to be able to fill out government paperwork without headaches about that. A gift, really. You might think that, but judging by Bugsy's hostile reaction to being called Ms. Bugsy, I have a feeling all the Forest immigrants would completely reject the entire concept of having separate first middle, and surnames, and just put their entire name onto the "first name" section of every form.
Bureaucrats all over the Court live in constant dread of having to deal with forms filled out by the infamous ex-fairy Not Applicable, named by a bored school admin with a wicked sense of humor.

Turns out it took Surma 15 years to come up with the "Reynardine" nickname. This is just another ability Annie inherited.

Dammit Annie, you're the worst at names To be fair to her, Red wasn't bad, it was kind of perfect for Red. And Blue wasn't bad either, since she and Red are partners, but then Red screwed that one up. Anny is here to put an end to this war I was thinking about that the other day and I think that's exactly what's going to happen. Loup is a huge source of etheric power, so he has to be gotten rid of to prevent the court using him as a battery for the star ocean. Zimmy is another one, my guess is Kat will accidentally kill Zimmy while trying to contain her etheric powers or hide her in a pocket dimension or something. And of course they'll name all the former forest animals & fairies to take that source of etheric power away from the court. But will that have unforeseen repercussions? Does the court itself require etheric power from beings like that to maintain itself? (I mean the actual buildings, not the people here.) Does the pocket dimension it's in require some? It might end up being really bad for people in the court and the forest creatures in the long run.
