After Annie and Renard realize they can talk to each other via the Ether without Omega's eavesdropping, they try unsuccessfully to send thoughts to Kat. Then Annie tries to figure out other ways to tell Kat about their idea. Can they whisper it really quietly? Not really, says Kat; she'd still be able to sense that, because she can sense atoms. Writing it down? No, she could see that. (Tom's note on this page is, "Come on, Annie.") Renard wonders whether Kat can do anything with her computer. She thinks, then she accesses her computer using her implant – her eyes turn black, so it apparently works. Then Kat confirms that Annie said they can travel by thinking. What's Kat got in mind? Because it's something. Can Omega eavesdrop on Kat's communications with her computer? Well ... maybe Omega can sense the electromagnetic digital pulses Kat's implant uses to communicate with her computer, but even if she can, can she interpret them? Omega could probably access all kinds of reference material on wireless protocols and perhaps even see Kat's notes from when she built the computer, but that would let her figure out that Kat's implant is sending 0111010010101010101010111, etc., which isn't going to tell her much. What's more, if it's encrypted (and if it weren't encrypted, that would be very dumb of Kat), that's even more difficult. Maybe she could find Kat's encryption key and the computer's decryption key, but then it's a matter of actually decrypting the data. If Omega were an actual computer, this would be fast, but she isn't; she's a human intellect with a life-support system. There is no way she could decrypt that in real time even with the encryption key, and without it, forget about it. To summarize, Omega would have to: - Intercept the stream of bits
- Decrypt the stream
- Interpret the data – it's still a series of bits; what does it mean? A series of bits can be text, sound, image, video, other data, any of these multiplexed together, etc.
