I'm sorry that clearly I have not been reading with the necessary attention, but I have missed the details around Robot's recent development. What exactly is it that he did that he thought would deserve the death sentence? I (think I) have grasped that he basically started a cult around Kat, but really do not understand what went on beyond that. If anyone could fill me, I would really appreciate it.

A lot of it was that he was engaged in schemes (at least agreeing to them, or being aware of them and not trying to prevent them) involving Kat's robot project that involved corrupt behavior (such as the "Torn Sea" scene - see that chapter for more details).

Robot has incited a fanatical religious cult around a teenage girl who has said numerous times that she isn't their "angel". He twisted her words, intentional or not, to further his religious agenda. Essentially he's been plotting and scheming behind Kat and Annie's backs and they are right to be upset that he's been doing all of this in secret, especially because it affects Kat, and the way she is perceived by other robots.
And if that wasn't bad enough? He orchestrated the hijacking of a ship full of teenagers and an etheric distortion which put said ship full of children in danger. He might not have been the one physically assaulting kids, but the seraphs were operating on his orders. And they said it was all worth it in the end because it got Kat to focus back on her work (was she worth anything to them outside of her potential to make THEM better? It doesn't seem like it).

Robots are really not supposed to be deceptive [1] but Robot was willing to lie and deceive to get the outcome that he wanted, even if that meant being terminated himself. The criminally inclined are quite fascinating and should probably be studied more. [2]
