This is what a nightmare looks like.

At this point I'm just going "what???" I hope it is a nightmare, because having things go boom this close to your spine and brain can't be good.

"what's the power level?"
"It's over 9,000!
*Bang* what? 9,000?"

Was it the chip or the activator that exploded? Kat isn't holding anything in her right hand anymore, which might suggest the latter.
If that's the case, the question of whether the chip actually was implanted is still open, even though given these events, it probably was.

Look at it tomorrow, Annie? You might want to make that sooner.

I hope Lindsey's willing to branch out into trauma therapy, because Annie and Paz are gonna need it after this scene...no matter how it turns out, really.

Practically speaking, I doubt this chip will, by itself, have a lot of influence on Kat. Requesting permission to eat my own words.

Jeemaneez, I was NOT expecting that! I'm really, REALLY hoping this is a dream or perhaps an illusion set up by Annie to show Kat how being reckless and how the consequences of not allowing anyone to set boundaries for her by saying 'no' can go horribly wrong.

I don't think it was supposed to do that. The eerie thing would that it WOULD! Like Kat was thinking: " Wow, sure this is going to be a BLAST!" and the chip/computer took it too literally...

You'd think for ANY scientist, putting something in their body that would intrinsically change it would have HUNDREDS of tests before the final product was put in. Either Kat's ego has gotten so big she thinks she can do no wrong or there's something else going on right now.

Hm, you know, looking at the page again, something about the way the boom speed lines are drawn is reminiscent of the astral bone shards that were spiritually stabbing Annie. Might just be a coincidence, but worth mentioning in case in case it gets me cookies later.

Sorry, pals, but This was it.
This is how Kat gets fatally injured and there is no other way to save her than uploading her mind into a NewPerson...
and voila, MechaKat Deification and Apotheosis.

Aw man I hate it when I get my regular computer chips and my exploding bomb chips mixed up mmmaybe she accidentally triggered a self-destruct she built in case of Court tampering? Or maybe it's like Star Trek consoles and you just can't get high performance without filling it with explodium.

I wonder if her technology could actually do that with human brain instead of a robot? Sounds like some sci-fi plot where people live forever by transferring their consciousness into new bodies from time to time. Still, the first thing i thought of is this guy:

We can't see her face, maybe she's still grinning. Next page she'll say, "All done! That went just as expected!"
(I don't think that will happen.)

Well, we knew something was about to go horribly wrong. You can’t have proper mad science without any explosions at all, it seems. I'm really, REALLY hoping this is a dream or perhaps an illusion set up by Annie to show Kat how being reckless and how the consequences of not allowing anyone to set boundaries for her by saying 'no' can go horribly wrong. Annie’s “illusion” would be soundless. She could do it for real without serious damage to Kat (only a few bruises/scratches/mild burns). While no one can see she is just a little bit spaced out (etherically active Paz could notice shenanigans, but… Annie rarely remembers to do it, without any extra distractions, and she was trained to “look around” as her very first exercise). Reach through the casing. A half-melted spot or small cut from the inside on its outer half, to direct the spray away from Kat. Then flash-boil a tiny part of the battery. BANG! A surgical strike, if you will. I don’t see how this would solve any of the problems involved, however. They may suggest to put big red OFF button on it the next time, or something, but Kat most likely will only be even more impatient. So Annie had method and opportunity, but no clear motive. We can't see her face, maybe she's still grinning. Next page she'll say, "All done! That went just as expected!" Psst. It’s « I meant to do that!»

Anyone else wondering whether the crack on the Mecha Angel's face is part of the chip that ran through Kat's brain and came out the other side?

So, Kat gets crippled and needs to emergency port her brain/soul over to an artificial body... becoming Mecha Kat.
