I think it's meant to be a joke about Excel being overly complicated

In fairness, most MMOs and a couple of other genres are a fancy inteface for a spreadsheet...

Yep. People have programmed all sorts of software in Excel including games. I've played several of those.

Oh no! The comic's about to turn into a LibreOffice vs OpenOffice war, with the Forest/Court conflict taking a background. We should have known... Annie will take the Microsoft path, and make peace from an outsider POV.

Excel, really? Why not Lotus 1-2-3? If not SuperCalc?

In fairness, CRPGs are basically playable spreadsheets.
When I'm really into a game and playing it a lot, eventually I end up spreadsheeting it to find optimal decisions, do long-term planning, etc. That's my final boss, though. Once the spreadsheets are working, the game is basically won and there's nothing but the grind left.

I say this with respect for your craft, but people like you are why I stopped playing competitive strategy games (,:

I haven't written any games in Excel, but I've done some pretty complex stuff there.
(Like the SUMIFS function? Wish there were similar functions that did something other than sum up the data? I have 'em. And if I don't have the exact one you want, the way I wrote them makes it easy to add more.)

All video games are about manipulating data, it's just a matter of how much of it is presented in a way that makes it reminiscent of a spreadsheet application.

Of course, the ultimate test whether a piece of technology is useful will forever be "Can you run DOOM on it?"

I suppose moving from cell to cell and parsing the contents of each is the definition of a dungeon crawl.

The pratfalls in these give me flashbacks to every comic I've ever read that has to ring the "THIS JOKE IS FUNNY!" bell by showing a character reacting to a punchline dramatically, instead of actually making a funny punchline, like a sequential arts version of a laugh track. It makes me realize how glad I am Gunnerkrigg proper never resorts to that.
