Now that's a reliable open source brows— Oh wait it's gone. Well, it had FIRE in the name, so... should have been made of asbestos? Idk

Now that I think of it, at the beginning of this chapter he also created a quite tangible (we see its effects on the terrain) apparition of his standard Loup body while still being Jerrek as well. Obviously he must have tapped into the Ether here (and this time without any of Jerrek's body parts changing shape).
Loup isn't nearly as good as Coyote at controlling the ether nor at controlling bodies. When he was manifesting a Loup body at the same time as a Jerrek body, Jerrek turned into a pretty lame puppet show. Agree that he can clearly use the ether even when in Jerrek's form, just saying he isn't great at it. The involuntary body part shifting is more evidence of that.
If he just fried Renard's fox body, that's about the worst strategic move he could have made. Obviously, something like "demand the body jumping power or see your body fried" would have been better.
The only reason I think this might be a trick is that he wants revenge on Renard for tricking him. Or so he claims. That would be a lot more subtle than I'd normally give him credit for, but mean-spirited enough to make it possible. On the bright side, I would think Renard should be able to figure out whether that was real and really his body pretty quickly.

Giving the horrified Annie and Renard just enough time to realize what they're seeing, a grinning Loup then reduces Renard's original body to cinders. Of course, he just threw away a bargaining chip YES! I was wondering if I was the only one who thought of that! That was INCREDIBLY STUPID of Loup. With that body intact, he MIGHT have had some leverage over threatening to destroy it. By destroying it right in front of them, he loses that possible leverage - and greatly angers at least four of the leading lights of the etherCourt. In particular, he has just communicated "do it my way, or DIE" to the person who possesses a blade that can kill him. If destroying Renard's original body also effectively destroys Renard... the above only more so. (Also, if Loup doesn't have retractile claws - neither wolves nor coyotes do - then his hand is now bleeding. Or maybe leaking sap.)

In particular, he has just communicated "do it my way, or DIE" to the person who possesses a blade that can kill him. I kinda figure he just duplicated Renard's body the same way he did with Annie, especially since Renard's her familiar now and Loup's shown he can hack that link. So he might be communicating, "I probably have a spare Renard around around here somewhere, but of course only I know where and when it will reappear. Or how. Or if. Think about that before using your blade." Or at least he might be communicating that to the etherCourt. What Loup's communicating to Renard is probably more along the lines of, "Remember how Coyote and I offered you your old body back, and you always coyly refused with a lame excuse? No more of that. You can either surrender, try to kill me with a bodyjump, or explain to all your human friends exactly why you don't want or need it back. Serious enough for you?" And then the Ennio Morricone kicks in. Hence Jerrek's refusal to get a haircut, huh? Loup's finally mastered woodworking, and it happened exactly how Coyote said it would! Puppy's getting smarter.

Loup already offered to give the body back in trade for the power of possession. Instead, they tried to capture him after making no effort to trade. I think the part where Loup is willing to bargain with the group is over, and he really doesn't need or want to make peace. Loup wants to figure out what is going on and take back Reys power and the tooth. He knows they want to kill or capture him, not give that power back. I don't understand why the body would be a good bargaining chip when it's pretty clear negotiations are over. This was about making a statement and showing power and a willingness to act. It pretty clearly says "mess with me and there will be serious consequences". As far as how he plans to get it back if it's not from a trade, I'm guessing he plans to murdereat Renard eventually, which I assume would work.

Renard's never been particularly arsed about his old body anyway.
