Huh, so Juliette's expression on the last page was more suspicion than anger. Hmm.
I doubt Shell was sent to spy on them, doesn't mean she wasn't followed though...

That's enough, play niceIt's a fair point though, it would be exactly like the shadow men to sow misinformation and promote infighting among their enemies when people get suspicious IMO we don't know enough about shadow men to know what "exactly like" them is. They keep secrets (even from big allies like Jones), they work to help court against forest. The people in this discussion haven't been shown to be "enemies", but so far people that shadow men treat as "allies" and try to protect (and annie and friends have also in turn helped protect court and shadow men). The court may want to promote cooperation, rather than infighting among this group, they may like the results they are getting. It is very hard to imagine that shadow men or their bosses are not aware on top level of Kat and new people, because Annie and Kat have shown themselves to be people who are surrounded by very important events, and what is happening is very obvious/hard to hide and court likes to track/watch almost everyone. Court may be happy about it, this may fit in with their plans. We've already seen similar with Annie's dad, where he didn't realise court was watching him all along even when he went far away looking for way to bring back his wife. Coyote was always feared but in past (parents era) forest was mainly only doing minor attacks/invasions, was seen as only a potential big danger, childish godlike entities with nuclear weapons type powers. But "recently" things have changed... After Loups surprise attack, forest and "magic powers" are seen as active threat to courts existence.

Trust is earned. Usually it's earned over time with shared experiences and a degree of intimacy, like sharing secrets. Sometimes it can be bought with other people's intimate secrets though, particularly if the prospective truster is young, inexperienced, or not paying close attention. [edit] Also: Since this meeting has gone on for a while and no mention has been made of the guests that were supposed to be coming I think that's evidence that Aata and Shell were the expected guests. Aata not being here allows Shell to straightforwardly spill what she knows about the Court's plans. Since they didn't know about the robots and Juliette, they expected Kat and Antimony to be short on allies and perhaps panicked about the program and Antimony being left behind when the Court moves, which would make them want to know what Aata knows but Shell doesn't. In summary, build the appearance of trust while actually keeping your cards close to your vest, place the kids into a subordinate position where they're going to have to ask for another meeting or whatever, and get talked up by your biggest fan. Good power move, just not enough info about the target, and it reveals that Aata wants something that Kat and/or Antimony have that should require trust (or a decent imitation). I'd guess Kat in absence of any other info except we do know something that Antimony could do for Aata; she could blab about what she and Coyote have been talking about. I bet he wants to know that really badly though he may be disappointed with what it is.[/edit]

While I tend to agree with Juliette here, Shell is far from telling them "all his secrets". In fact, she doesn't seem to know much about anything.

" Some guests" plural were coming and Shell went on about how good it was Aata wasn't there a few pages back. I think that means Aata was coming but didn't, which (all things held equal) should mean that he knew about the meeting. If Antimony reached out first then I don't think the dialogue on this page would play out the way it did. Juliette asking Shell what she's doing there is possibly just a rhetorical question calling Shell out, but if invited Shell could simply reply that she was invited and therefore can talk however she wants. Juliette might not know Shell was invited if she was invited, though she didn't seem surprised to see Shell, but Shell should know. Instead Shell goes after Juliette's credibility in panels 3 and 5. Also in panel 5 Shell's sweating a bit, which I think shows she's got something at stake that's currently under threat. Shell doesn't want anything herself from Kat or Antimony that I'm aware of, so most likely she's worried about the trust she's trying to fudge build and the risk is that without it she's let Aata down. Luckily for Shell Antimony's stepping in to shut down the exchange, which (assuming they don't continue the line of inquiry later) proves that aggressing can be an effective tactic sometimes. Whoever reached out first, Aata not being there is still a power move. It's arguably more rude if he asked for the invite and then only sent Shell, but either way Shell just doesn't have the answers that Antimony and Kat want and probably can't agree to do anything herself that either Kat or Antimony wants. That postpones the meaningful discussion in a way that benefits Aata.

Who has the authority to fire the leader of the Shadow Men, and what are they up to? I was thinking about this, and the only thought I had was that he stepped down himself, because everyone saw him use magic and he isn't suppose to as leader, and Atta is aware of that, as is everyone else. More forced resignation then a boss firing him

That postpones the meaningful discussion in a way that benefits Aata. Partly agreed. The "some guests" implies Annie clearly thought Aata was coming, but in the end, he didn't. I don't see why Shell would set up the meeting, saying Aata would come and then he's a no show, which is kind of a dis right away, and gets the meeting she set up off to a bad start. Annie has reached out to Shell before, and her medium nature, just makes me feel she's the more likely initiator. It's also possibly interesting Annie calls them "guests", suggesting they were invited, rather than visitors, which she might have used if the ex-SM initiated the meeting. (Not so sure on that idea tho...) Annie knows Shell better than Aata, so I'm assuming she was the contact. If Annie gave the invite, I think it's still possible that Shell decided not to relay the invite to Aata as well, preferring to scout things out herself first, and now she's relieved she didn't. Maybe this scenario is less likely though, you're right. Or perhaps Aata has sent Shell out ahead to "scout out the terrain" (of what she finds is Kat's New Peeps Workshop, LLC.), preferring to remain non-committal for now. Or it could be a power play, as you suggest. Maybe Shell didn't even realize he wasn't coming ("I'll meet you there...")! Actually, it's pretty bold to allow Shell and certainly Aata to visit Kat's workshop at all! Frankly, I'm surprised that A&K felt confident enough in their read of the two that they wouldn't go back to the Court or SM and tell the Court/SM everything. According to Arthur, Juliette has been able to keep KNPW, LLC completely hidden so far; seems dangerous to let two of certainly mixed allegiance in on the secret. Juliette is more suspicious (maybe with good reason, being more intimate with the SM and their thinking and ways) and I think she is being rhetorical and calling Shell out. Shell could reply as you suggest, but if she's trying to build/fudge trust as you also suggest (and I agree, it seems like this meeting could be angling towards cooperation or at least info sharing), its not a very good strategy to seem so mysterious and non-forthcoming.

I don't see why Shell would set up the meeting, saying Aata would come and then he's a no show, which is kind of a dis right away, and gets the meeting she set up off to a bad start. Some people think that it isn't an insult if the people in question don't know they are being insulted. Neither of the girls is that well-known for social sophistication and though Antimony's a medium by heritage and training they're both pretty young. As long as they don't notice they're being looked down on it doesn't set the meeting up for a bad start at all, though like I said it does postpone the real negotiations for a later date. I think Aata thought he could rook Antimony and Kat like a couple of naïve school-girls. He had confidence in the Shadow Men organization's surveillance to keep tabs on everyone and thought he had a better handle on the situation then he did, but thanks to Juliette and probably also Bud their net's got some big holes in it. Good reminder to always work the fundamentals, trust but verify, always check 6, etc. Shell didn't even realize he wasn't coming ("I'll meet you there...")! Don't know if Shell knew in advance Aata wasn't coming... but if he doesn't tell her then she can honestly say she thought he was coming. Actually, it's pretty bold to allow Shell and certainly Aata to visit Kat's workshop at all! Frankly, I'm surprised that A&K felt confident enough in their read of the two that they wouldn't go back to the Court or SM and spill the story. Agreed, it's bold and a show of good faith on Antimony and Kat's side. I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't be afraid of Aata and Shell ratting them out to the Shadow Men or other people in the Court from a sense of duty (and that may be what Kat and Antimony are thinking) but you are absolutely correct when you write that from a strategic standpoint it is very dangerous. If Aata is willing to divulge what Shell knows of Court secrets to build some trust with some potential allies, and may be willing to bargain away more, you can rest assured that he'll at least consider bargaining Kat and Antimony's secrets if it gets him something. Juliette is more suspicious (maybe with good reason, being more intimate with the SM and their thinking and ways) Shell and Juliette are not only older but spooky. They've almost certainly had at least a little exposure to the basics of, if not training in, intelligence and counter-intelligence... and maybe even some field-work. Shell could reply as you suggest, but if she's trying to build/fudge trust as you also suggest (and I agree, it seems like this meeting could be angling towards cooperation or at least info sharing), its not a very good strategy to seem so mysterious and non-forthcoming. Aata and Shell didn't know about Juliette being there. If Juliette wasn't there Shell would seem very forthcoming. She comes off as passionate, loyal, and straightforward... she just doesn't appear to know much of the important details. Additionally, she's probably closer to the girls' age than most Shadow Men. There would be an excellent chance Shell could build a rapport with the girls if given a free hand to do so and guide them towards whatever decisions Aata would like. I think we saw it working, but then Juliette got suspicious at how freely Shell was blabbing secrets and decided to piss on her parade.

Dunno if Arthur lives there at Kat's lab but if he lived with Juliette she might have to do some 'splainin. But if the expected guests were Juliette and Arthur, it was a big and fortuitous coincidence that Shell appeared when she did.

I'm thinking the guests were Juliette, Arthur, and Shell. I don't think Annie has a great amount of trust in Aata, after how he spoke to Coyote and what he did in the forest, but Shell had been forthcoming about information. So it makes sense to set up a meeting with Shell and the whole party (Annie, Kat, Renard) present, and include Juliette and Arthur (the Shadow Men that Annie and Kat do trust) in the meeting. J&A can tell the party what the Shadow Men have been hiding within their own ranks, and corroborate Shell's story if need be.

I'm a little confused by Juliette's stance here. A few pages ago she was exclaiming that she would leave the Shadow Men, but then she gets angry at Shell for spilling so much information. It's a little unclear what her stance on the Shadow Men is, exactly - does she still believe in what they do, but is thinking of leaving just because of her relationship with Arthur? Or does she want to leave because of her own misgivings about the group? And if so, why would she get angry at Shell? I suppose it is as others here have suggested, that she is suspicious of Shell suddenly being so forthcoming, more than anger about her revealing Shadow Men secrets. To two teenage girls, nontheless (albeit to extremely precocious teenage girls).

Until then she looks suspicious. I don't think that she's mad at Shell for spilling the Shadow Men's secrets, I think she's questioning what appears to be a fast 180 from Shell and then gets mad at Shell's words later. If you read Juliette's words carefully in panel 2 it sounds like Juliette might not have known Aata got booted from the Shadow Men, though it's clear in the comic Juliette was there when they were discussing it earlier. Two possible explanations for that I can come up with are 1. that Juliette is baiting Shell a little, suggesting to the girls that Shell's loyalty even to Aata should be open to question (because it was Aata's organization until very recently) or that 2. because this is a comic the dialogue was rewritten from something longer to fit the word bubble and came out a little awkward... or alternatively, the pages were reordered during editing and in a previous version Juliette called Shell out earlier in the conversation.

What secrets? The only thing that might be new to some in the room is the fact that the court plans to move, and most of them already knew that from the other day. I still don't trust Shell's motives, and won't until we get an innocent explanation for how she happened to be walking around alone in the dark dressed up and randomly found them, then stayed and talked instead of continuing on her way. Everything else she said is either common knowledge or pretty obvious... Oh, except for the nature of Aata, but that's hardly earthshaking when they already knew he could enter the ether and had powers. She hasn't disclosed WHY the court wants to move, what they need all that ether for, why they think it's unfair that some have it and others don't, why they think it's ok to rip it away from Coyote or Loup, etc. Surely she knows some of this! Heck, I'd even be relatively happy if she told what the point of the move is - do they want to move somewhere there is no ether somehow? Or maybe somewhere they can block the effects of "animals like Coyote"? The closest thing to real, new info she's shared is a bit of the attitude of the court - it appears they generally think that powers from the ether are "unfair". Or maybe that's just Aata that thinks that... Not clear. Either she is out of the loop and just doesn't know much, or she still works for the court. My cookies are on the latter. I think Juliette is suspicious for the same reasons I am really. Shell is acting very out of character, for her, and also is trying to act like she is being friendly and open while learning everything she can and disclosing nothing important. I read Juliette's mood progression in this scene like this: 1. Somewhat relieved that Shell didn't visibly lose it upon learning about Arthur 2. Suspicious 3. Frustrated and growing more so, because Shell is clearly probing and playing dumb about the stuff SHE should know 4. Starting to get a little angry because of frustration at the lack of real answers, and obviously suspicious behavior
Juliette is an adult working professional, and I'm thinking she will almost certainly calm down now that Annie broke up the cycle of escalation, and articulate her concerns more calmly. I think she's clearly the most mature and level-headed human in the room. Only Renard has more life experience, and he is clearly not human and thus has a different view of things.
Not that it matters, but I've always sort of thought Juliette (and Arthur) are probably in their 30s - older than the main characters but younger than Tony and Anja and that crew, and much younger than the headmaster. Shell seems younger, maybe in her 20s? Hard to be sure though, as we only see little episodes from their lives. I'm guessing here based on behavior and how they are drawn, so there are huge error bars.
On a related note, the headmaster is drawn sorta old and withered, which would make him NLT 60s/70s, maybe much older, but that really isn't possible when he has a daughter in the same class as Annie and Kat and company. Actually, wasn't he in the same class as Surma and Anja? I seem to remember an incident in the gym! So the art probably indicates attitude more than age in his case. I mean, that guy...

Random thought:
I wonder how much ether capacity Aata has? Couldn't HE be the court's new source of ether? Based on the personality and motives Shell is claiming for him, I'd expect he'd be willing to do that... I mean, if they take his ether (siphon it off and put in their machine), wouldn't that also solve his problem with wanting to not use the ether, and maybe even make it so he's allowed to go along on the move?
I'm still not a huge fan of Aata, Shell, or the crappy parts of the court, but this seems like a very practical solution, that is even consistent with his stated desires (as claimed by Shell). Why not take the needed power from someone that doesn't want it any more, instead of stealing it from someone who loves it?

Maybe they need a genuine god-tier level power source and neither Zeta nor Aata by themselves or with others just won't do... ...or whatever the extraction process requires, it was something Aata didn't want to volunteer for at any point or subject anyone from the Court to. ...but they could justify using on "Loup" who was actively trying to kill people.

So I was right and wrong about what would happen next. Juliette doesn't seem to have had her life ruined by a bad Omega fortune cookie. But she does tell us the problem she's got with all of this.
Juliette immediately lights into Shell about what her agenda is, coming here and telling these specific people these specific secrets. In light of this, her and Arthur's expressions in the last two frames of the previous page now seem to mean that they're first taken aback when Shell says something, or anything in fact, about Omega, which is supposed to be super secret. Juliette then suspects that Shell has an agenda. And that leads smoothly into this page.
Shell counterattacks, accusing Juliette of keeping secrets about the robots/New People, but that's not really equivalent; Juliette's accusation is that Shell's revealing secrets with an agenda, not keeping secrets. Shell says an interesting thing: "I'm not even in the Shadow Men anymore, I don't gain anything by telling you all this." Does this imply that if she were still in the Shadow Men, she would gain something by revealing this secret? What would she gain?
It's going to dissolve into recriminations until Annie steps in to stop this. Obviously whatever issues exist between them aren't going to be resolved by continuing in this direction.
So what's Shell's agenda? Is she evil? That is, is she trying to separate Annie and Kat in revenge for upending Aata's plans, thinking that Annie and Kat will be torn apart by Court politics, while she and Aata will get to stay together? But wouldn't Annie and Kat have found out about this eventually anyway, and been blindsided by it to boot, and now they've got some warning? Or is she good – now that they're warned, maybe Annie and Kat can make plans.
I just thought about Don and Anya. Clearly Anya can use the Ether, so the Court isn't going to take her. But Don has no etheric talents, so they could take him, although he has pseudo-etheric abilities because of being a user on Anya's computer. They've got a decision to make, but I'm guessing Don's going to stay with Anya. That mirrors the decision Kat's going to have to make. The Court won't take the New People or Annie, and Juliette won't leave Arthur, so does Kat go with the Court and become very influential, or does she stay behind with Annie, Juliette, and the New People (and probably her parents)? I'm guessing that in the timeline where she lost Annie, Kat went with the Court, leaving everyone behind, but in this timeline, she probably won't.

Agree about the attitude, I've always thought that was what we were being shown, also that it is theoretically possible to have offspring when over 60. But still, he just reminds me of Lurch, only much less friendly. Almost... mummified?
Maybe someday we'll see Janet's mother. I'm really curious at this point.
Or maybe he looks like that because he's experienced severe stress? Or maybe time travel stuff? Just don't know enough.

Did Juliette know about Omega, and think it still needed to be kept secret for some reason, despite all the other tea she has spilled? Or was she shocked to hear that the activities of her org have been directed for years by something she didn't even know about?
Maybe it's supposed to be obvious but it still seems ambiguous to me at this point.
Personally, I thought the comment "It's all for the Omega device" to be rather ominous. Perhaps she did too. I could certainly see her being upset if she suddenly learned that she's been working for an AI or whatever it is, if she thought she was working for Aata or humans! Not sure how "It's all for the Omega device" fits with what Loup and Zimmy learned, and what Annie learned when eavesdropping.
Annie convinced Kat to ask her mom for help a while back, maybe Kat can convince Annie to ask Tony for help? Or at least info...
I'm also still not convinced that Shell is trying to be a good guy here. As opposed to a spy. Maybe this will be a Shell redemption arc?
