Does that mean Aata is of Polynesian ethnicity? (or Melanesian or Micronesian or any of the other various ethnicities native to the Pacific Ocean's islands)
I never realized that, in that case.

Panel one takes me back to the second last panel on this page. She's channeling her father's authorative demeanour from her own experiences being interrogated. Edit: Authorative is probably the wrong word for it, cool, stern and/or detached feel a bit better.

As cool as their big temples were, present day Indonesia was the greatest significant eastward extent of Buddhism I'm aware of. Less Pacific, more East Asia.

"Don't trust" sirens at full whoop-whoop, folks. So, a god (or practically one) has been stomping around the shadows of the Court. We've all seen the visual send-up to Budai, right? I wonder if part of Aata's ax to grind is the "spinning world" status quo (to paraphrase the Moddey Dhoo) as a curse or abomination, like samsara. Because although Budai and Siddhartha Gautama are distinct entities (as an ascetic, Gautama was *thin*, for starters), Budai/Fat Buddha is also thought by some to be Maitreya, Gautama Buddha's successor - and usher of an utterly ego-less, unpossessing new age. Sounds right up everybody's alley, huh? Note: A bodhisattva, which falls right in line with the above (Maitreya being the bodhisattva of the future) I'll accept half a cookie now, and half a cookie when someone actually says his name.

I'm going to say I called this one because I definitely suggested a bodhisattva. On my phone so I can't search for it but if someone finds the thread (wasn't just me saying it) I'll give them my cookie!

"The Pacific Islands" is pretty vague, even by Gunnerkrigg standards.
I'm hoping that Tom doesn't pull a Cho Chang on us, because he generally seems to have done his mythological research.

I'm hoping that Tom doesn't pull a Cho Chang on us, because he generally seems to have done his mythological research. he wouldn't narrow it down until it'd actually be required by story From a story-telling POV, it makes sense to be vague. From an in-story viewpoint, it seems likely that Shell ought to know about her ex-boss. It's one of the first things you ask about a person. From a real-world perspective, "the Pacific Islands" would imply Micronesia or Polynesia, which doesn't match Aata's Buddhist background. A quick Google search claims that Aata is a Maori name, but I don't know enough about New Zealand culture to verify. Maori culture is related to Polynesia culturally, and isn't Buddhist. Of course, this is Gunnerkrigg Court, so all possibilities are open. If Aata is immortal, by birth or by obtaining enlightenment, there's a definite circa 500 BCE founding date for Buddhism; so that's the earliest an immortal Buddhist Aata could have begun his journey. TL;DR version: It just seems odd that Arizona would say "the Pacific Islands." Of course, Aata might have been vague whenever the subject came up. "So, where are you from?" "The Pacific Islands" But "Indonesia" "Polynesia" or "New Zealand" would be vague enough without raising extra questions. I dunno.

The Gautama Buddha founded Buddhism during that time but there were many previous bodhisattvas. Siddhattha Gotama met a previous Buddha on his path to enlightenment who had lived like 10^200 years ago

What I'm really looking forward to is the account of how Aata wound up becoming one of the Shadow Men working for the Court. I've a strong suspicion we're about to get a story about good intentions leading someone increasingly astray.

Other than Japan, the Philippines is the closest that Buddhism got to the 'Pacific Islands'. Of course, Annie might be jumping to conclusions about Aata being a boddhisatva. Arizona: Boddhisatva!? Hell no! Aata was a karaoke king."

I suppose Aata could be another Bodhisattva. The "shackles" line also reminds me of the buddhist idea of being trapped in the cycle of rebirth, suffering/desire and the material world. Hahaha I'll take my cookies now!

Siddhattha Gotama met a previous Buddha on his path to enlightenment who had lived like 10^200 years ago The Big Bang was, current estimate, a bit under 14*10^9 years ago. Rather less than 10^200.

Just because the country Aata comes from is not a predominantly Buddhist country doesn't mean there are no Buddhists living there, you'll find adherents to the major world religions in every corner of the world. And even if there were none where he lived, Shell says he traveled the world. He could have picked it up anywhere else.

Irrelevant. The one who would become Gautama met that previous Buddha during a previous kalpa or cosmic cycle, hence, before the current universe was born. But Aata probably is (was) a follower of Siddarta Gautama, the last Buddha. If he had survived the creation and destruction of the universe he would be a great deity...

I'd still like to know why Shell was walking around late at night in a dress and happened upon the place where all the NP and Annie and Kat were. Was she on her way to a date? Just out for a stroll, dressed up because she can't or doesn't want to wear the shadow man uniform now that she quit? I guess we don't really know where the NP area is versus the living areas, so no way to tell whether this had to be a long walk.
She seems fine talking to Annie and Kat and Arthur and Juliette, and isn't really as shocked by the whole "robots are now new people" thing as I would have expected, but she also seemed quite surprised to happen upon the whole setup initially. Much mellower than I would have expected, given that until now she has always been presented as being pretty high strung.
So... she was dressed up, and heading somewhere to do something, no? I have to guess that she was dressed either for a date or a club. Unless there's something deeper going on, like she was sent there to investigate. Or maybe she just likes to get dressed up and wander around aimlessly in the dark, with no cell phone or self defense stuff.
But if we take things at face value, then she's at loose ends and doesn't see any reason not to hang out with the Scooby gang and share information. Huh.
If that's the case, I'd still like to know why she was walking around in a dress, in an industrial area, alone, at night. If nothing else I'd think a typical single girl might be nervous about encountering weird forest creatures, like the Dover Demon! Or Loup, who she knows is hiding somewhere and has reason to not be pleased with her (due to her role in the attack). I mean, he specifically stabbed her, so I'd think she'd be a little nervous!

At this point I'm rather confident that Shell didn't happen upon this at all, she was in fact the visitor Annie mentioned expecting before the haircut. I don't know why she was invited and let in on everything but that seems to be what's happening. Also while its still relevant, I assume this is just how she casually dresses outside of work, a fun dress and top combo without any jewelry is a pretty casual, if quirky, outfit in my part of the world/soical experience. I've been writing the wildly different reactions everyone is having to this outfit off as one of those social/economic/geographic differences.

I was focused on the idea that Aata had to come from a predominately Buddhist island, or even a place with heavy influence. Although, it could be a moot point. Today's strip shows that Annie's interpretation of events might be wrong. The whole "Boddhisattva" thing came from her, not Shell or Aata. (Although Tom's art sure tries hard to make Aata resemble some sort of Hotai Lucky Buddha-esque figure.)
