It's said, and is often true, that fear (and hope) can do that to you. Wouldn't be surprised if Anthony dinged his prosthetic hand (not to mention his real one) in trying to get to his daughter.

Well isn't this just a wonderful Eurotunnel-meeting-in-the-middle kind of moment!

That he does! I spent a while trying to figure out which young man from the Court could be looking at down the hole and why I didn't remember him. It was his shirt that finally made me realize it is Tony!

Whoa, Jesus christ...Tony?
...why the hell is he the only one digging? And with his hands no less? Would somebody please help him?

Whoa, Jesus christ...Tony? ...why the hell is he the only one digging? And with his hands no less? Would somebody please help him? Why assume this, rather than, say, that he insisted on being the first one down the hole when it met the one being dug from below?

I wonder if this will change parely's perspective on anthony. With very little info in the background it's hard to tell if there's an excavator up there that helped him dig or if he just picked a spot and started digging. Either way I can feel the parental panic in that last panel.

In the grand tradition of the internet of criticizing anything/everything incessantly, brought to you this morning by insomnia, here is the original panel 1 of today's comic and a bit of the surrounding panels for context. It's broken up by bars; that shows transition (skipped time) taking place (along with the color changes) from the last panel of the last comic. It's also a way of making a panel more visually interesting. It's broken up according to the rule of thirds in 1:2:3, which is conventional and sound, but the standard GC thick black borders between panels throws a monkeywrench into the works. I've done a fast/dirty reconstruction of the original panel and rebroken it taking the dark areas into account; so the broken pieces on the left (not including the first bar) roughly equal the remainder of the panel (1:2, more or less). I think this is a more visually-appealing application of the rule of thirds. What say you?

Tony: "We've been trying to reach you about your cars extended warranty." I answer the phones for my workplace and oh man I need to give this 1 million likes. Or at least one for every one of those bleepin calls I get in a day.🤣🤣

After a "Let's get to work" from Shell at the end of the previous page, probably indicating that some time has passed, here we have Parley returning to the cavern full of Forest creatures and looking for Annie. It looks as if it's probably the same cavern they were in before, approximately three times Parley's height here and expanding as you go back. There's a tunnel going upward at an angle, so evidently Annie and some Forest creatures have been doing some digging. Parley says they're not far, and in fact ... the surface team suddenly breaks through.
How did the surface team know where to dig? Well, we might see more later, but one possibility is that they were just digging a very big hole in phases (probably with earthmoving equipment), heard Annie and Parley's voices just beneath the surface during a pause between phases, and dug there. Another possibility is that they used some sort of ground-penetrating radar to find where the tunnels nearest the surface were.
And the first face Annie sees ... is Tony's. His face, arms, and clothes are dirty from all this digging work, and it makes sense that he'd be the first, consistent with what Parley told us about his spearheading the effort. There's a dark sky and light behind him – a floodlight, or the moon? Considering how blue it is (and how unlikely it would be for the tunnel to be dug in just the right angle to point toward the moon in the sky at the time of breakthrough), it's probably a floodlight.
We've got more Tony rehabilitation happening here, and I know a lot of people aren't going to be swayed, but I'm feeling more and more as if the horribleness of his reappearance in chapter 51 was manipulated by the Court in an attempt to rein Annie in by any means necessary.

It was his shirt that finally made me realize it is Tony! True story: I did not realize who it was and assumed it was Eglamore. And I know there's a kind of running joke in the commentaries of these pages that the author must specify whenever Eglamore appears, but this has nothing to do with it. I simply made a mistake. Then again, he does have a beard nowadays.

Couldn't have been Smitty, due to the lack of sufficiently mighty eyebrows.
