Looks like stealing Coyote's powers wasn't the final goal of the plan.

We're going to have to wait another dozen or more chapters to find out what the plan actually is aren't we?
'Grats on the award, Tom.

I couldn't find in myself even an inkling of sympathy for this POS until that last panel. Well done, Tom, and congrats.

It is highly telling that the fairies refer to him as Pretty Man given their uniquely alien perspective on things.

They're probably seeing the flowery Buddha image from when Coyote froze time, so it's not that weird to call him Pretty Man. Also, yay Tom, congradjulashions on your award! Does it come with a Reuben sandwich?

Am I the only one who is worried about "the next steps" given the track record of this dude so far

Hooray for Tom!! Congratulations on your well deserved award!
Also, yeah...next steps of the plan? Some kind of contingency plan that needs to be addressed? Curious what he thinks of the fairies.

Realizing that he's in for it now, Aata steps up. Parley's ready to take him to Eglamore for his well-deserved chewing-out. But Aata also thinks he's going to be allowed to advise on the next steps of the plan, whatever plan he means, and whatever those next steps may be. He asks Shell to stay and help with the rescue effort. Aata's "excised from the program," whatever that means, and yet he can still advise?
Aata's line, "If I fail at this, too, then everything will have been meaningless," is absolutely full of references to ... things we know nothing about. What did he fail at before, this "failed cousin" of Coyote's, this "beautiful failure?" What exactly is the "everything" that will have been meaningless? All this tantalizing vagueness!
The fairies have followed Annie through the hole! And they can see Aata in the Ether, because of course fairies see everything in the Ether. I'm assuming they're calling him "pretty man" because in the Ether he's constantly surrounded by flowers.

I assume the fairies are complimenting what he looks like in the ether, like with the flowers and stuff, rather than in meatspace.

Well, not to generalize, but the fairies we've seen so far have a tendency to call anyone and everyone fat. The first chubby person to be remarked on by the fairies gets called pretty. Seems pretty weird. He wasn't exactly slim in the ether either. [exhibit a][exhibit b][exhibit c][exhibit d][exhibit e][exhibit f]

Maybe his flower-bedecked appearance in the ether trumps his BMI (Body Mass Index)? Fairies are shallow!

Am I the only one who is worried about "the next steps" given the track record of this dude so far I'm with you. I'm very worried that there is still more plan. If nothing else, the latest step (Steal Coyote's Power) sure seems like a total fail, so I would have thought that would be the end, but here we are! Are we moving on to Plan B or whatever, or was the possibility of this failing just a branch within the actual plan? Eep!

If they've finished studying Zeta (and assuming their goal is to make humans into gods, god-like entities, or at least people who wield god-like powers) they should have at least a theory on how to avoid making the people they want to empower into "busted floodgate" Zimmies. The simplest way would be to maintain mechanical separation but there's inherent vulnerabilities in that, plus it would probably be emotionally unsatisfactory. Therefore what, mass production of android Gammas? Or something else?

Seems pretty weird. He wasn't exactly slim in the ether either. Hm, it could be a metaphor for spiritual aestheticism. Like, instead of 'indulging' in his desires, Aata has 'starved' himself in pursuit of this Plan. Or maybe I'm overthinking it, and Fairies only use made-up insults.

He's pretty fat

Really, he isn't that fat. It's just that the vast majority of Tom's characters are quite fit. Even the dean, who seems to be pretty sedentary (we only ever see him in his throne) lacks any sort of paunch. It makes sense for the kids, but really, who else in the comic is out of shape at all? Khelpi, I suppose, but she was pregnant and pretty far along, so that hardly counts. I guess the elves have a little more variety of body types but not so the humans.
Aata just looks... comfortable. I only really noticed because of his Buddha incarnation, which immediately made me think of what typical Buddha statues look like. They are not slender! Shell is a beanpole, and the shadow man red-shirts are pretty much average and interchangeable.
I really didn't take Coyote's "beautiful failure" as a physical description though, but then who am I to interpret the thoughts of a god?
