Everyone Springs Into Action.™ I wonder who it is informing Kat, and in turn Juliette and Arthur? Did Anthony bolt over there or did Parley stop off on the way? The urgency with which she's explaining everything to Andrew suggests she went straight to him. Jones probably got a phone call. And she's also still in the same office she had in chapter 9. Edit: The extent of the Forest tidal wave in that second last panel adds a bit of perspective to the first panel here. Annie, Eggs, Parley and Aata were behind the wavefront. There's no way many in front of it survived that. |

So far, the main take away I've got from this chapter is just how far away the safe zone actually is from the forest's edge. Like, damn, most of the Court didn't even notice that.

Rey said there was an alert happening, parley found smitty in the time it took annie to call rey. I think we are looking at the initial action after the shock. |

Looks like Renard's wasting no time. Today's page begins with a spreading-the-word montage. Tony is off like a shot – I usually try to react without reading anyone else's comments first, but I couldn't help reading arf 's, which directed my attention to Tony's socks: will he remember to put on shoes? I'm not sure how Kat and Jones got the word, but they're involved – Tony could have called Jones; Renard probably ran to tell Kat, if Parley didn't pop in to tell her. Parley's told Smitty, and probably either Kat or Tony has informed Arthur and Juliette. Who's in the background of Kat's frame; who's she beckoning to? I doubt those are her parents, unless one of them has started wearing cat-ear hats. Maybe those are some of the ancient robots, or the new androids? (I think imaginaryfriend has it – it's probably Shadow 2!) Amid the Dutch angles it appears that Jones' office has an oddly diagonal door. Finally we see an exterior shot of the inundated Court. How much of that is wood, and how much is dirt/rocks? From here it looks like mostly wood. Probably neither ironwood nor solid stone, though, or there'd be no digging through it. And then in the final frame Annie appears to be addressing the Forest creatures, perhaps suggesting or forming an escape plan. But how many of Annie's rescuers are going to see rescuing the Forest creatures as a primary objective next to rescuing Annie, who doesn't really need rescuing herself that badly? Without any dialogue on this page, it's hard to say whether Annie's friends are making plans to get the Forest creatures out or just to get Annie out. My vote, however, is that they're planning to get the Forest creatures out, because getting only Annie herself out would require only Parley and Smitty, and everyone else knows that. |

The fact that there are people running down the hall outside Jones' office probably shows that the Court is reacting to the general situation in its own way, but we're seeing people who have been informed of Annie's situation specifically. Probably. We'll see. |

Smitty! Surprised and at the ready from Parley's exposition!
Renard! Explaining the situation to Tony in great haste!
Tony! Rushing into action!
Juliette! Taking cover with Arthur from all of this action!
and Jones! Casually opening the door to walk over to the place of incident, ignoring all the commotion that the people rushing past her are causing.
It looks like Annie is pointing for the forest creatures in an instructive way, but I wonder if we'll see some finger-lasers soon.

Next to Eglamore’s office, the placard reads “Ms. Jones.” It makes sense their offices would be adjacent, I think. (Also, I think Arthur is supposed to come across as Really Tall.) |

It's oddly therapeutic to see Tony doing something quickly for a change. A bit more of the old Rainforest Bug Scientist Tony would be cool to see now. Maybe he can make his special coffee brew for everyone if the rescue operation takes longer.  |

Aw, dangit, I didn't even realize! We spent so long (almost THREE YEARS) with two Annies, that I very much got used to it and even started to enjoy it as a plot device. But I never considered how long it would take me to adjust to having one Annie again. |

There is really a lot going on on this page! Not all the same thing either - I really don't think everyone shown is springing into action to save Annie.
Panels 1 and 2 - Renard and Tony heading to help Annie. Let's hope Tony remembers shoes this time!
Panel 3 - I suspect this is Kat reacting to the breaking of the shield and the incursion of the forest. I believe she is in her lab, as I'm fairly sure that is Shadow 2 and Seraph 5 in the background. I imagine she'll be showing up with more than just them though! Hope she thinks first.
Panel 4 - Jones coming out of her office to see what all the fuss is about. The people running in the hall are probably reacting to the violence of the shield breaking and the forest overrunning the court.
Panel 5 - Parley coming to fill in Mighty Eyebrow Boy. Not sure about this one - she could be planning to get him to help Annie, but she also has obligations to the court. Since she said she was there to back up Annie, I think they'll be heading into the tunnels. Porting into the tunnels. It seems like it would be easy to justify taking the court medium to the forest to where the forest critters are, even if the court is again unhappy with Annie. I'm sure she'll get blamed for all of this, again, at least initially.
Panel 6 - Arthur and Juliette reacting to the shield/forest thing. Panels 4 and 6 seem to be inside buildings hit by the forest. They may even be underground at this point, who knows? Well, Tom, but not us.
Panel 7 - You got your Forest in my Court! You got your Court in my Forest! Nice picture. I have to say, I'm surprised that this is what happened when Loup let go of the forest. I'm not really sure he broke the shield on purpose at this point - it looks more like a forest wave (like a tidal wave, only with a forest). We know Coyote had set things up with sort of a network of randomness keeping the forest the way it was, but seeing this I don't think we really know enough to understand what that meant.
Panel 8 - Annie guiding the forest critters... somewhere. Through the tunnel? To where? Through a building? Again, to where? I have to think she's mainly trying to keep them calm and fix whatever level of panic has been going on. Seeming like you have a plan is better than joining in with the panic! Heck, she probably does have a plan, but I don't remember her having any sort of fancy radar sense or anything like that, so I'm not sure how she could know where to take them. Also, she's pretty much on her own at this point, with no way to talk to anyone in the court about her plan, whatever it is. You know, that's fine really - she's the forest medium, not the court stooge.
Can't wait for the next episode!

The only ones we regularly see in Kat's mad scientist lab are Shadow, Robot, and the revived robots from early court history. Now that I think about it, I don't think anyone in power in the court knows about THEM either, as Juliette and Arthur have been protecting Kat all along.
I imagine that's about to come to an end. Time to revive my "Questions about robots" thread!

If the old registration building is down here in the tunnel - we can see what appears to be the top of the building here (top of panel 6)... www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=2525and its likely more of it is buried below the tunnel floor... then it would seem more reasonable that this tunnel is not one of the old invasion tunnels under the Court (otherwise why would parts of the Court be now under it), but rather a new tunnel that was made as part of the Forest wave. If so, what is going on? These new(?) tunnels (like the old ones) would seem planned, not a random event. Some Coyote scheme behind the scenes? (Maybe Im getting to suspicious in my old age...) |
