Errrm ... my impressions. Well. Sure is black, isn't it? Yep. I mean, I could speculate about what it represents, as we've never seen a totally black bonus page before, not even to make a chapter's number of pages come out even. OK, it's not totally black; it has the antimony symbol, as is usual for bonus pages and end-of-chapter pages. I even downloaded the page and examined it with GIMP, and that's #000000 black, except for the symbol, and the antialiasing and JPEG artifacts around it.
So, anyway, black can symbolize death. It can mean emptiness, hollowness, or void. It can merely mean the absence of light. Sometimes it's said that in the beginning (alpha) all was darkness; perhaps in the end (omega) there will be darkness as well. Does this represent the Court making use of the Omega Device as a last-ditch defense? Or does it mean that we'll see the death of one or more of the characters that were involved in this chapter? Or could this blackness symbolize what others feel, not knowing the fate of the expedition? Kat has saved Annie's life more than once, but what if she's now worried that Annie is dead despite all her efforts? But the antimony symbol persists, meaning that we're not seeing the end of Annie – this is her story, after all; she more or less has plot armor. Now, by that I don't mean that she can't die; I mean that even if she does, we'll see what happens to her after that (becoming a spirit guide, for example, or otherwise having more adventures as a ghost). Alternatively, what if this has something to do with Zimmy? Suppose the Court has grabbed her and is using her for their next Omega Device experiment, with some very dark results?
Where will we go next chapter? Will we continue to follow whomever is still stuck in the surging Forest tide as they try to survive and escape? Will we go to the other characters in the Court who are now dealing with this unprecedented assault, in addition to the uncertainty about whether Annie, James, Parley, Cvet, Aata, Shell, etc. are still alive or not? Will Loup continue to batter at the Court with waves of earth and forest, or was one wave enough? This is a good page to put up on a Friday, assuming you like cliffhangers.
