My opinion: it's both! Annie is in the middle of a difficult negotiation with a semi-god, it serves her interests to give Loup a half-truth. The shifting was a power play. By recombining without his help, she regained control. She has every reason to take advantage of that and let him believe she is more capable than she truly is.


On the actual recombination:
I'm convinced that Zimmy enabled something Annie did, just like in Torn Sea when Kat used the Zimmyspace to make a body for the ship. Zimmy gave Annie a nudge, a missing piece, and Annie had a realization about herself. Annie understood that all aspects of her where her. Between CourtAnnie and ForestAnnie we all thought one of them would have to disappear, somehow. But she was always a single person even when she couldn't make up her mind if she wanted to wear make-up or not. And because she had that realization inside Zimmyspace it became a physical truth. But Zimmy couldn't have "fixed" Annie on her own, Annie had to come to certain conclusions about herself to reunite. She had to fight with herself, listen to herself, and accept herself to make it happen. So Zimmy acted as catalyst.

That's my theory anyway!

Now, now, let's be fair...Tom has given us LOTS of explanations about Annie's whole "being two people" situation. Between "Dealing With HER", "New Contract", "Down That Road", and "The Mind Cage", we readers are practically up to our ears with the sheer number of "explanations" we've been given. I can't understand why each one seems to have just made everyone more upset! I mean, what more could people possibly want?! An actually SATISFYING explanation?! That would make for a boring story, don't you think?!

Is this just Annie tricking Loup, or did she plan/ask/purposely interact with Zimmy in order to unsplit herself? I kinda suspect the second, but I have nothing but to back that up at all.

Edit: I guess she knew Zimmy had experience with this sort of thing, and some people seem to think we didn't see Annie enter the Zimmyverse, but that she was already in it.

unless I'm completely off in left field, Aata looks a lot like Buddha,
and given that Gunnerkrigg is a world with actual myths and legends becoming Gods,
and people being able to gain power, and create new types of magic, and technology
I wonder if Aata, isn't coyote, could he be a different god hiding in the court?
providing power to the security team of the court, allowing them to actually handle
the various threats from both within and without.

I don't believe this theory is true, but I love it! And it would lbe amazing if Coyote was Aata all along!
