I have some doubts on Loup's interpretation of Annie's intentions. See Aata's smile in panel 4? AAAAAAA THIS IS WHEN THINGS GO BAD Aata is seeing with their own eyes that Loup is a childish tantrum thrower who has lost control of the forest, these kinds of people are much easier to manipulate than someone like Coyote. Also Loup seems much more agitated than last time we met him, is the lack of control starting to get to him? Bringing Ysengrin's paranoia and anger to the fore?

Oh my lord... are we going to get a bootysmack of Loup? I feel like he doesn't have the playful demeanor of Coyote and as such MAY react badly to that, but he does deserve a tap on the behind to remind him who's REALLY in charge here!

It might not be anything significant, but I note that Loup's view of 'all these people' in panel 3 does not include Aata and co. (who is definitely in panel 4) [addendum] Indeed, could the Shadow Men's little mechanical ritual prior to entering the forest be the source of Loup's agitation? (Aata looks even smugger than usual in panel 4) [further addendum] Ah. I see Aata signalled his entourage to keep well back.

Loup knows if Annie's back, it's because she has the lake water. And according to Coyote's plan, that means he's going to die. I wonder how much of that tantrum-throwing is nerves. Loup doesn't get to be alive for long. He behaves a bit like a toddler, but then, he was just born. It's almost sad how he won't get to grow, to understand his powers or the ether in the ways Coyote did. He's running out of time before finding out if he could be what he wants to be.

Annie, you didn't take matters in our own hands. It was purely accidental on your part.

I about 90 percent believe that Annie won't throw Zimmy under the bus here. It will be interesting (to say the least) if Loup is able to suss out what sort of influence caused the merge, though, and tries to go after Zimmy.

I think Annie's not correcting Loup on his presumption that she brought about the merge is in order to protect Zimmy and Gamma. And from the Court as well as Loup.

In panel 4, how is Aata able to look over Parley's shoulders? Did he climb on a tree or a floating cube?

In panel 4, how is Aata able to look over Parley's shoulders? Did he climb on a tree or a floating cube? I figured it was more a stylistic representation of an old cinematography trick: convey that someone is superior to someone else in a scene by having them appear larger and literally above their inferior. The framing seems to subtlety suggest that, for the time being, Aata and co. are 'above' Loupe. At least, that's what my old English 102 lessons make me think.

Would love to see some of Annie's extra fire power if she is forced to defend people, and it might even work if Loup can't concentrate enough to stop her.

In panel 4, how is Aata able to look over Parley's shoulders? Did he climb on a tree or a floating cube? other possibilities: 1) one of the shadow men brought in a step ladder 2) the background warping isn't just an illusion... the ground really is curved in Loup's vicinity! Aata is further back and on higher, warped ground.

Loup has registered a complaint that Annie undid ... whatever he did. (Are we going to get an explanation about what that was at some point?) So today, Annie simply states that Loup refused to help her, so she did what she had to. That's ... very helpful, Annie, thanks from all the readers, good work.
Loup, however, is also similarly unhelpful in understanding exactly what he or Annie did, but to be fair he's got a whole Forest to keep from unraveling. He considers it ... insulting, somehow? What, does he think he gave Annie a gift and she rejected it? Does he think that he promised her that he'd fix it (he didn't, as far as I can tell) and she didn't believe him? Loup's taking an aggressive wolf stance, and Annie's looking as if she's taking a defensive posture but standing her ground.
Now Loup's complaining about all these other people Annie's brought with her this time. They're looking kind of indistinct there in the background; I'm wondering whether this conversation is taking place at least partly in the Ether, so we're seeing them from that point of view. Or perhaps the time slowdown thing is happening, but if that were true, they'd be moving in fast motion. Unless Loup has time-stopped them, but that seems as if it would take more of his already taxed concentration.
And there, as Loup continues to rant, we see someone smirking in the foreground. I suspect that is Aata's smirk. More of his usual aplomb, or is this playing into the Shadow Men's hands? Is it part of their plan to get Loup all angry with the intrusion of all these people into the Forest? "Ahhhh good, our devices will record exactly the sort of readings that the Court needs." Or perhaps, "Ahhh good, his anger is making him even more distracted, and he's losing even more control over the Forest, ceding more etheric territory to us." Or even, "Ahhh good, soon he'll be completely distracted, so the next Omega Device activation will take him completely off guard."
And finally Loup turns back toward Annie, looking very fierce and angry, accusing her of bringing this distraction on purpose to ruin his concentration. He looks like a wolf not quite ready to spring, but certainly ready to fight. Annie is still standing her ground defensively. I'd be surprised if she hadn't considered the possibility of a hostile reaction from Loup and decided at least partially on what to do if it happened. Zapping him with fire hasn't worked in the past, but maybe she's got an escape or defense tactic worked out.
Loup isn't mentioning the lake water at all. My guess, and that's all it is, is that Annie's going to offer it to him to get the conversation back on track. "No, we came here to give you this. The Court didn't want me to come alone, because they think bad things happen when I do that."

It will be interesting (to say the least) if Loup is able to suss out what sort of influence caused the merge, though, and tries to go after Zimmy. I still suspect Zimmy just showed her how to do it herself (or even just how to discover how to do it), and it was Annie who actually did it. Of course, I also still suspect that her split was something Annie could have done herself, if she'd had the knowledge and inclination. So I'm with you; I think Annie won't say a word about Zimmy.

In panel 4, how is Aata able to look over Parley's shoulders? Did he climb on a tree or a floating cube? In recent panels we've seen that the edges of this area that Loup's in curve upward; he's in some sort of valley or depression, if not entirely on the inside of a sphere or cylinder. So, being farther away from the others, Aata and the other Shadow Men may actually be on higher ground. (Edit: saardvark already said basically this same thing.)

Loup's difficulties in controlling the forest reminds me of a major plot point from my favorite SF novel, M.A. Foster's The Gameplayers of Zan.
In that story, the eponymous gameplayers required enormous concentration and mental strength. We eventually find out that there's much more to the game than just entertainment, and the "true game" had very serious consequences indeed. One player is literally driven mad after playing the "true game" too long.
If Loup's "game" of forest control is like that, it raises a lot of questions about his sanity.

Also, Loup reads a bit like a malignant narcissist - 100% not being sensationalist - and that really doesn't bode well, unless his mood can be pivoted.

Aata's smirk really convinces me that we are about to see a huge trick of coyote's I think coyote cloning himself then stripping the clone of powers and hiding the clone in the court would be a great trick against Loup, and the rest of the court too. coyote promised not to interfere with the court, but he didn't agree not to assist them. being the head of security, would be a great way to assist the court, while not interfering.
unless I'm completely off in left field, Aata looks a lot like Buddha, and given that Gunnerkrigg is a world with actual myths and legends becoming Gods, and people being able to gain power, and create new types of magic, and technology I wonder if Aata, isn't coyote, could he be a different god hiding in the court? providing power to the security team of the court, allowing them to actually handle the various threats from both within and without.
And Loup still hasn't figured out that coyote's secret to controlling the forest was that coyote didn't have a mortal form, and could be any part of the forest he wanted. And when he wanted to be, he could create a physical form from his surroundings at any time. Loup created a time clone of Annie, pretty sure coyote could have done the same for himself or Ysengrin. And why was Ysengrin obsessed with keeping his body, as it got older and more frail? why did he never ask to take the body of a younger wolf? why did he never ask for eternal youth? why did he never make a body out of a tree, and put his soul into it? why did he never ask for Reynardine's body to replace his? why was Ysengrin obsessed with staying in his mortal body?

So, either Annie's lying, or Zimmy did not merge the two Annies, just gave them the ability and/or knowledge to recombine. BUT I don't think the latter is the case, because then why would Renard have thought he would have to "explain" to Annie what had happened? Like I said in another thread, I DO NOT TRUST AATA Does anyone?
