Jones has definitely noticed Paz with her back to the group, Panel 5 is a perfect way to kill the conversation and sidle over to begin the interrogation.
What is Paz feeling though? Anger or guilt? The non-expression is inscrutable and there's not enough body language to go on.

That is some intense face of Paz, right there.
And aww, those kids are so relatable, haha.

These kids all stuck with homeschooling and playing cards instead, that is some 2021 energy right there. At least they can be with each other.

There is no measure to how much I enjoy Jones's completely lack of expression in any and all circumstances.
Also, on the plus side, Tom is clearly not done with the Paz storyline, but I doubt it will be resolved this chapter. Laying the groundwork is Tom 101. Technically this conflict has been going on since chapter 70, which is a little surprising, but since it's Kat's girlfriend I think it's a good thing we are spending so much time with this.

Jones has definitely noticed Paz with her back to the group, Panel 5 is both a perfect reminder/insinuation of her authority and a way to kill the conversation and sidle over to begin the interrogation. Agree though I think the kids walked into that instead of it being a tactic; though Paz is clearly acting like she knows something she doesn't want to talk about I don't see a need to shut the conversation down at that moment. They might have had more to say regarding Antimony and/or Anthony. It's useful for moving the plot along, though. What is Paz feeling though? Anger or guilt? The non-expression is inscrutable and there's not enough body language to go on. As a convention in comics I've seen it on characters when they have an epiphany regarding something they don't like or otherwise come to a conclusion that they don't want or can't face (heh). For obvious reasons it sometimes precedes important dialogue or drastic action, sometimes violent action. Other times it's just a "fallen" face, so to speak, and that's what I'm going with at the moment. [sidenote] As a general rule, if I can't figure out how to draw something the way I want I figure out a way to draw it without drawing it. I've used a similar tactic with writing, with drawing I can't remember ever using this particular convention but I don't cartoon much at all. It might mean that the author/artist had trouble deciding which way to go with Paz's expression on that panel, or couldn't get the effect he wanted or enough impact with it, or alternatively wanted to leave it to the readers' imaginations so that different people could "fill in the blank" differently. [/sidenote]

[/sidenote] All of this sounds plausible, although I also think it may also be a reflection of Jones's point of view. She can clearly see the faces of the rest of them from where she is, and the last panel especially seems like it's directly from her point of view. Paz's facial expression wouldn't be visible from where Jones is.

Funny that her name means Peace when she's been so good at raising Cain. Or maybe she isn't as good at managing it as she thought she was?
That shadowed expression always portents some kind of sturm und drang - and Jones is just the placid authority figure to withstand it and pursue her line of questioning, unfettered.

Edit: Doing it this way avoids showing her hands too, which might be a giveaway. imaginaryfriend 's point about something a character doesn't want to face feels like it fits. That coupled with speculation posted elsewhere (reddit et al) is leading me to think that all the 'Annie this, Annie that' talk is hammering home to her that she'll never be a clear number one in Kat's life.

I didn't mean literally from her POV, but generally this chapter has shots from Jones's theoretical point of view. 2444's last panel seems to show the heights of Parley and Cvet as seen from Jones. And the current chapter's last panel has all of the couch characters angled a bit downward from Jones's perspective. I don't disagree with imaginaryfriend's general point about it being something Paz doesn't want to face. But another way to take it is that she is both literally and figuratively hiding it from Jones by turning away. The other characters are open to Jones by being in full display. This is also seen with Parley openly discussing her dislike of Anthony and Cvet openly gossiping.

No, I get what you meant, I just disagree that the panel composition is about Jones' current ignorance, and more about what Paz is feeling.

On further reflection Paz's head is angled in panel #5 like she's turning away. If she's making a break for a door we haven't (clearly) seen yet then that would give Jones a reason to shut the conversation down. Not that Paz has any chance of escaping Jones if Jones wants to talk to her, though. Doing it this way avoids showing her hands too, which might be a giveaway. Maybe. If you read comics and pay attention it's mind-blowing how many hands and feet wind up behind speech bubbles or other stuff, and get cut off by the edge of the panel. It's like they're hard/time-consuming to draw or something.

My impression here is that Paz is inwardly praying for Jones not to pay attention to her or ask her any questions about something she is desperate to hide. It does feel like a strong reaction, more so than I would expect from just having done some gossip. Maybe there is more going on there after all.

I just hope there's more to it than "Paz jealous of Kat's female friend" because that story has been told countless times. It's become a boring trope at best, and a terrible stereotype about girls at worst.

I wonder if this is a clever way to get Annie back into the same grade level as the others? Her continuing her studies properly while the other slack off, could lead to them all ending back at the same effective point in their studies.

Four very guilty faces in the last panel. Virtual truants, every one.
Maybe they don't have a Tony to crack the whip?
