It's possible, that Rey merely tried looking in the Ether mid-conversation, but it doesn't quite seem that way from the panels.
If Plenard(Rushie?) isn't even Rey, that would explain why he can't change. Or if Rey has been divided into different aspects of himself, that would allow fun dialogue between Gamma and... Ethard?
