Huh? Indeed Renard. No cute outfit though? booo! Who would have thought that the character whose intoduction was him trying to kill Annie in the 3rd chapter would become the fans' favourite character 15 years later?

A cheap way to cop out of drawing Renard in a suit, Tom. Boo!

Well, if we count both Annies as one, single entinty, she won with 5837 votes. I'm happy with ol' Renard's victory ("They'll never outfox the Fox!" ), and I'm sure we all knew who the most probable top four would be since the beginning. I'm also glad (and relieved) that no joke votes and rallies resulted in unfair rigging, thus influencing and affecting the poll (or at least, not so much), which (potentially) would have ruined all the fun, as seen in other communities and sites (for example, with a Tetris' L-Block being declared "Best Character" or Undertale winning "Best Game Ever" on GameFAQs). Congratulations to all the Gunners, Spacemonauts and forest denizens out there!

I actually find this incredibly surprising if only because I can't remember the last time he actually did anything, though once Kat and Antimony turned up it was pretty clear where the wind was blowing.

I'll take solice that in a different timezone Renard wasn't in the toy so Kat was #1 in the poll There are enough different timeframes that Renard and Kat each got #1 an infinite number of times, and so did each of the other characters in the poll. Even Boxbot.

While Rey may not have done much in the narrative lately, he does still have The Tooth. As I'm sure many have said in WildSpec, that's a pretty big Chekhov's Gun(Chekhov's Tooth?) to be carrying around. Add the fact, that Coyote was adamant about its existence being a secret to the Forest, and we can only deduce it's part of Coyote's "plan". When Loup wants to see Rey, in order to get back Coyote's swapping power, who's to say what will happen.
Besides all that though, I like Rey. He makes horrific mistakes, out of stupidity, then owns up to them. Even if his humbling is in the dark, where no one else can see him do it.
There are interesting parallels between him and Tony. Rey tried to deliberately kill Annie in desperation, while Tony caused prolonged emotional abuse from sheer ignorance and brokenness. Few of us can empathize with attempted murder, but many can empathize with being emotionally abused. I'm betting that's why Tony is so disliked, while Rey is so well received.
That, and he's a sassy, cute stuffed toy. Let's be honest.

Congratulations to that guy! Not That Guy, the other one. I would like to see the complete rankings since none of my picks made the top 10.
It's been interesting to read why readers chose who they chose.

Congratulations to all the Gunners, Spacemonauts and forest denizens out there! I am also glad there was no joke candidates soaring to the top, since that would imply that people weren't sincere in their votes cast. Like others have said though, I don't think Undertale is a good example of a joke candidate. It's one of those titles that the people who like it REALLY like it, and there's a reason so many people fell in love with it. Granted I wouldn't consider it the best game ever but I don't think any game deserves that title. Also: for those that didn't know it, check out who designed the character Monster Kid from that game.

What this poll really tells us is that readers largely consider the essential characters to be Rey, the Annies, Kat, Zimmy, Jones, and Coyote. Which is surprising to me, 'cause arguably Jones and Zimmers are there for spice more than Ysengrin and Robot. But they do flesh out the world and make it mysterious and interesting, so in that way GC would be incredibly different without them.
I'm still sad Boxbot didn't make it. I'd love to see more numbers at some point, Tom!

Well, if we count both Annies as one, single entity, she won with 5837 votes. Yes and no. While the total vote count is higher than Rey's, it doesn't necessarily mean that a single "Antimony" character would have received this many votes. That's because we were each given three votes. While most voters probably used only one vote for Annie, choosing either F or C, it's certain that at least some used two of their votes on Annie. No other character had this advantage.
I think a better method would have been ranked choice voting, where we'd be able to select a first, second, and third choice with the votes weighted accordingly (three points for first, two for second, one for third or something similar). This may not have been possible in the particular polling app Tom used, however. And it still wouldn't prevent the double-Annie problem, though revealing the number of first-place votes might have clarified things somewhat.
I'm pretty sure my favorite would have won by a landslide if ranked choice had been used! And we all know who that is, right?
Anyhow, two of my selections made the top ten -- possibly three, except I can't remember whether I picked Jones or Anja as my third.

for the sake of it. For me, the real "WTF??" here is the huge step up between Parley and Coyote. Almost twice as many votes for the pooch than for anybody below him. That seems really freaky. The top six are just miles more popular than all the rest of the characters.

It's fitting for me that Renard is number 1 (even if he had nothing prepared) because he is the reason I discovered the amazing world of Gunnerkrigg Court. Some months back I came across a web page describing how Reynard the Fox was a major influence for the fox character of Robin Hood in Disney's 1973 movie of the same name. In the web page comments, someone asked if there were any modern interpretations of the medieval tales of Reynard and Ysengrimus. Gunnerkrigg Court was mentioned, I followed the link, and I've been captivated ever since. I am a bit disappointed that neither Donald Donlan nor Anja Donlan made it into the top 10 or were even mentioned in the countdown.

The top six are just miles more popular than all the rest of the characters. Yeah, it's strange. I was sort of expecting the number of votes to follow an exponential curve. But if you want to see something freaky, then compare it to election results. Like, actual political representations chosen by popular vote. Take the US Senate: 100 senators, a nice round number. Well, That Guy Party managed to get enough votes to take one of the seats. It came 17th. You need a coalition of top 6 parties to get a majority. If Zimmy Party does not find a way to get along with Kat Party, and they never really did get along at all, or Jones Party starts bickering with Coyote Party like they did on more than one occasion, then you may need to somehow cobble together a coalition of ten parties, or a dozen. Just to get a simple majority. I challenge our US readers to name six parties! (Or 17 if you think you're into politics... )

The top six are just miles more popular than all the rest of the characters. If we're looking at it from the perspective of story importance, it doesn't make a lot of sense since you have a lot of important story characters below the gap. If we're looking at it from the perspective of uniqueness, I think it makes a small amount of sense. There are not too many characters in fiction like Coyote, Jones, and Zimmy. As much as I love Ysengrin and Parley, they feel a bit more normal than the three right above them. Kat, Annie(s), and Renard are super main characters, they're always going to top the lists. Also, some of these polls would be different if they were taken at other points in the story. Mort would top the list if this was done during the ROTD arc, but it's been a long time since then.

I've read that Goscinny and Uderzo originally planned to do an adaptation of Reynard the Fox, but then learned that someone else was doing it, and so created Asterix the Gaul instead. I really like Asterix, but I've sometimes wondered (and I suspect everyone else who reads this will as well now) what Goscinny and Uderzo's take on Renard and Ysengrin would have been like.
