Dreamhost pulled the site down due to memory usage. A mirror can be found here: www.graphicsmash.com/comics/gunnerkrigg.phpUPDATE: Late sunday. The rain batters the window. The chair creaks. It looks like the site might be back. I seem to be getting some strange CPU load readings with the new setup so I turned the comments off for now to see if that will calm it down. There is a possibility that comments will have to go. In the meantime, treat the site as normal.

That's your problem. Dreamhost sucks. Try apisnetworks.com, you can even get a goon discount.

Hi - new reader (yes, I came at Jeph's behest - sorry if all we QC'ers flooded the site!) here, just reading through the archives to get caught up in the storyline, and a significant chunk seems to be missing from the mirror site -- www.graphicsmash.com/comics/gunnerkrigg.php?view=single&ID=16304 (posted 2008 July 29 according to the archive calendar) and www.graphicsmash.com/comics/gunnerkrigg.php?view=single&ID=16312 (posted 2008 July 31 according to the archive calendar) have no posts between them, and there seems to be a substantial gap in the storyline. Is this an intentional leaving out? Should I continue to read and simply assume all will be explained in due time? Or am I missing out on eight pages worth reading? Thanks! ps - LOVE the story so far. You are definitely Jeph's most worthy recommendation yet.

No, nothing is missing from the mirror site. The storyline of the chapter ends with the page from July 29 and the next page is a flashback as indicated by the rounded corners (remember chapter 2?). It caused a lot of confusion among most of the readers, so you are not alone on this one. ;D Also let me welcome you to the wonderful world of the GC-addicted.

Thanks! ps - LOVE the story so far. You are definitely Jeph's most worthy recommendation yet. New board member, long time lurker myself. The story line you refer to includes several flashbacks, which is why It can seem disjointed if you jump in halfway. Basically you can tell flashbacks by the curved panel corners. If they are curved at the top and bottom it is a single page flash-back, if just the 2 top corners are curved it is the start of a multi-page flashback, if the button 2 are curved it is the end of a multi-page flashback. So 31 July is a one page flashback, to Kat's first appearance in the comic. It is a retelling of www.graphicsmash.com//comics/gunnerkrigg.php?view=single&ID=14922and www.graphicsmash.com/comics/gunnerkrigg.php?view=single&ID=14923from Kat's point of view.

Nice to know I'm not the only one who took Jeph's advice, and I couldn't agree more, at least as far as webcomics go. I just wish I had noticed this thread earlier. I was going nuts for a couple days. Getting addicted then refused in the same day is not something I enjoy.

Hey, it's online again.
edit: Oh, didn't notice the Update! text Why would simple PHP produce a lot of CPU load? Odd..

I'm glad that it's back up again.
If the comments have to go in order to save the site, I'm fine with it. First, what matters the most is that the webcomic will be able to continue, instead of ending prematurely. And the forum probably makes the comments redundant (it certainly has the advantage that things posted in the forum are permanent, while the comments disappear into cyber-oblivion once a new page gets posted).
I suppose the lesson we've learned is not to let good publicity spread too quickly.

The lesson is especially not to have a crappy website...

No, the lesson is that lot of hosts are using every chance to make more money once you're one of their customers.
I don't think comments will have to go permanently - that'd be a more expensive hosting with less features. Also, now that GC is on a VServer, it has it's own ram/cpu so if one of the scripts needs too much resources it should just die and not take up someone else's resources and therefore not cause any problems - except for GC itself of course but at least there's no threat that they block GC due to memory consumption again.

I'm still curious why the comic ID#s jump from 16304 to 16312 though... odd. The main site doesn't jump numbers. Not that I didn't trust you all... I'm just curious like a cat. Thanks for explaining the flashback thing too -- I don't think I would have ever noticed the curving of the corners! Cool stuff

I don't think Tom's host was being greedy - just concerned over the strain on the site from so many visitors coming by all at once.
Tom prepared us for the curved flashbacks in Chapter Sixteen.

The lesson is especially not to have a crappy website... OR, the lesson is to not have a high traffic website get linked by another high traffic website on a shared hosting plan. Also have money.

May GC go down as the first historic victim of Jephdotting.
(Damn right we need to popularise the term.)

Tom, I'm sorry to hear about the hosting problems you had. Gunnerkrigg Court is an amazing comic, a stunning visual story with a great deal of originality - something that is seldom found in the world of creativity. Paradox, but a true one. (It's my personal frustration whenever an elf or an orc show up in a "fantasy" story. Can't they think of something new, something entirely invented, from scratch? "Oh, but my elves are DIFFERENT!" You don't say. Why call them elves then?) Your comic is a real precious jewel, and it would be a terrible shame if it went away somehow. You'd break a hundred people's hearts. I just wanted to say - thank you. Don't let the bad internet people ever make you feel bad. For every one of them, there's at least a dozen that feel otherwise. Thank you for making GC and for keeping it online for us to see.
