I can't view the comic. On any browser. And the mirror isn't updated until tomorrow. Is anyone else having this problem?

QC linked to gunnerkrigg today (questionablecontent.net). Maybe it increased traffic and caused the main site to exceed its bandwidth limits... if so, I hope it won't become a financial issue for Tom.

I've been having that problem too, and at first thought that my anti-spyware or anti-virus programs considered the site dangerous. I hope this problem gets cleared up soon.

Tom just reported that the host pulled the site because of "memory useage". He didn't say how long that would be, or if it would even be temporary or permanent.

What exactly does "memory useage" mean?

I don't know. Tom used that phrase, not me; he'll have to answer that question.

Memory usage you mean? In that case i can explain something. Okay, you know computer has several kind of memory? Like disk and RAM. Servers has memory which is shared by others users. I not sure about amount per user, but small as 2-4 mb is not impossible. So exceeding this limit is not always too hard. Understand?..

The way I understand it, bandwidth usage is calculated by the month and it's the end of the month, so...
I'm guessing the site will probably be back up on Monday, if not before then. It's not permanent.

The site most likely won't be back up on monday. It will probably take "a few weeks" according to the hosting guys. I used too much CPU ram on the shared server I was on, so it is down permanently until they enable the virtual private hosting I had to buy.

For those of us who don't know much about how computers work, could you explain more about "CPU ram", please? Did the amount of archived episodes reach the breaking point, or were too many people showing up after the link from Questionable Content that others mentioned?
And since the mirror site is updated a day after the original site, does that mean we'll have to wait until Tuesday for the next page, instead of Monday?

The site uses PHP which is a programming language designed for websites.
When you surf to gunnerkrigg.com/index2.php (the main page), your browser asks the webhost for index2.php. Normally, the host just reads the page from it's hard disk and sends it to your browser. This uses almost no resources except bandwith and very little time and ram=memory to load.
Things are a little different with php: When the host receives the request for a php-page, it reads the page from disk and then translates and executes the script/programm included in the page.
This translation and execution need ram.
I guess too many people from QC visited GC and so, at some point, there were too many scripts to be translated/executed that used too much ram.
But that's a pretty lame excuse for dreamhost. Killing the site permanently just because of a single peak in memory usage - that's not fair.

A shared web server is a machine that hosts several websites belonging to different people. This machine will use RAM like a normal desktop to perform tasks, such as rendering pages, getting files, doing stuff like that. The links I got from both Questionable Content and Diesel Sweeties on the same day meant my site was getting so many hits the web server had to use up a lot of ram to perform all the taks. The guys at the hosting place saw that my account was taking up a lot of memory and shut it down.
Right now I'm not sure if I'm going to bother scheduling updates to the mirror while the main site is down since only a small percentage of people will see them. I'll see how I feel about it. It sort of defeats the purpose of having a mirror, but then I actually like people seeing my comic.
If I do update the mirror then, yes, you will have to wait until Tuesday.

Would it be possible to let the domain gunnerkrigg.com point to the mirror? Or to a page hosted elsewhere that explains the situation and links to the mirror.

So we might have to wait a few weeks to get new material? Sigh. And just as the chapter was getting exciting.
I guess we'll need to keep the webcomic much more low-publicity for a while, at this rate.

Between this and the problems with the book release, it gives one the feeling that this is not a good time to be a Gunnerkrigg Court fan.

What bother me the most is that it's precisly because he was linked that he got 404'd ; I wonder how many potential readers he has lost just because the main site is unreachable.

I'm sorry if I upset you, Tom; I certainly didn't mean to do that. I was only expressing my disappointment that we might not get to see any updates for a long while.
The trouble that came from the link brings up a sad paradox: spreading the word about "Gunnerkrigg Court" may endanger it instead of helping it, because it increases the traffic at the site to a greater level than the site's mechanics can handle.

When the site comes back it will be able to handle the load. It's being moved to a non-shared hosting with its own ram. If I wasn't upgrading it then it would never come back.
