It's only got one band holding the staves so I can't agree that it's a handsome bucket. More like it's designed for one use.

I do like the way flatbot's visual sensors change position.

I agree, Mr. Siddell is doing a good job drawing the expressions of and where the 2d POV robot is looking.
[edit] Also I wonder if this dialogue from the 'stallation bot is her version of or a windup to "keep your safety harness fastened, keep all arms and legs inside the bucket; enjoy your ride."[/edit]

Look around you. Look around you. Just -- look around you. Have you worked out what we're looking for? Correct. The answer is
buckets.
(Which is one way to ruin the title drop the Interface was going for.)

I've been hoping that the bucket and assumed onrushing flood of sensory inputs soon to appear will be more than just a visual metaphor, that somehow the bucket is actually some sort of temporary cushion for the shock of all that data that the robot won't be accustomed to processing.

"...to all robots who want it."
Looks like Kat is planning after this first attempt to truly give the other robots the choice to get a new body or not.

"...to all robots who want it." Looks like Kat is planning after this first attempt to truly give the other robots the choice to get a new body or not. Currently experimenting with how to ensure they want it? (There was a short story "Temptation" by David Brin about this. "Sure, what we're offering is irreversible, but it's really great and... Oh? You don't want it? OK, well we'll just wipe this little conversation from your memory, and perhaps try again later.")

If the not-angel is a representational guide, then perhaps this whole scene is not "real", but rather a mental image occuring in the mind of a robot transitioning into a new form (thanks to Kat). It is a "baby" new robot-thing, and hence it sees itself as limbless, with limited mobility, somewhat helpless, protected only by a bucket, from the vast sea of sensation and emotion which may soon rush into the scene.... (speculating a bit here!)
------ continuing along those lines...
next scene:
not-Angel: "Yes. Your bucket is a representation of the protective buffers, given to you by the Angel, to prepare you for the next, greatest gift: the ocean of sensation and emotions soon to be yours."
flatbot: "Oh my!"
not-Angel: "Indeed, it is an awesome experience. Soon you will touch, taste, and feel, just as any human does. It can be a bit frightening and disorienting at first, but your bucket will protect you, and the Angel and I are here to guide you. The Angel has gifted you an ocean, it is now yours to navigate and enjoy!"
ocean comes roaring in....

Swipe right on bucket? Hey, I'm not kink-shaming.
I'm sure some of the symbolism will never be explained to us. Some of it may specifically serve no real purpose(like Buffy and the Cheese Man), but I wonder why it's that style of bucket. I'd think the robot's would lean more toward a light metal bucket. Maybe, I'm just paying too much attention to the Cheese... or it's a clue to the nature of the <insert lore topic>!

So, anyway, again the figure is not the angel, but says "we hope". Getting more and more convinced S13 had a hand in programming this interface. Swipe right on bucket? Hey, I'm not kink-shaming. Has anyone else noticed that this Interface-person has yet to open her mouth? Neither do robots, when you think of it. ...okay, I admit I did not notice this until you pointed it out.

That was implicit right from page one of this chapter. By the way, I agree with the rest of your post. So, anyway, again the figure is not the angel, but says "we hope". Getting more and more convinced S13 had a hand in programming this interface. Agreed, especially considering that "the angel is working with your ancient ancestors". Very Robot-like indeed.

Somehow I get the feeling the robot is already in the ocean. The ocean is just very very still. The angel pulling The Copenhagen Little Mermaid pose is probably what’s making me think that.

Honestly, that bucket reminded me of the old silly pictures of people who were destitute wearing a barrel instead of clothing.

I can't take full credit for this, but: It's a Bit Bucket. Wikipedia: "In computing jargon, the bit bucket (or byte bucket) is where lost computerized data has gone, by any means; any data which does not end up where it is supposed to..." He was clearly supposed to be checking pipes, and now he's talking to some weird angel thing.

Am surprised that everyone avoided the temptation to/never noticed the opportunity to use the old-style bucket to make the obvious inference from the original definition of bit bucket... what was that it was used to contain chads.

I mean, I know it's a show about vampire slayers, but "Buffy and the Cheese Man" sounded more like some kind of silly meme than something that actually happened on that show. Regarding the Cheese Man in Buffy, he appeared in a dream sequence shared by many of the main characters. According to Joss Whedon in a DVD commentary: "...the Cheese Man — meaningless. Why? Because I needed something in the show that was meaningless, because there is always something in the dream that doesn’t make any sense at all. In this case it was the Cheese Man. He confounds everybody because of that, and people ascribe him meaning. This to me means that we’re being successful, because this means they’re not worried about everything else, which means they sort of did understand most other things."
