Tom has just tweeted about this: "Big news! I've been talking to Magnesium Film about a possible animated series based on Gunnerkrigg Court and I'm happy to be able to announce it publicly! It's still very early along, but you can read about it here:"magnesiumfilm.com/blog/f/meet-magnesiumAnd a response to someone's question: "They bought the rights to option a show, not the comic itself, so business will be as usual over at gunnerkrigg.com no matter what happens!"
Pretty crazy! I'm crossing my fingers that it happens. Congrats to Tom! Wanna talk about voice actors again, anyone?

The only thing that exists from them is that blog post.
I want this to be a thing but this is literally a group that buys the rights to stuff and flips/pitches it.
Who are these people?

I'm pretty psyched at the idea that this might happen, but I'm also skeptical. Not getting my hopes too high just yet.

Hmm, let's see: They're a totally green production house, seem to have only minor production experience, zero showrunning experience, very limited industry connections, and they're wildly pitching random projects including Gunnerkrigg. With those odds, I give it a 90% chance of being picked up by Netflix.

The only thing that exists from them is that blog post. I want this to be a thing but this is literally a group that buys the rights to stuff and flips/pitches it. Who are these people? They mention that it’s a brand new company and some of the people behind it in the blog post, and that Gunnerkrigg Court is their first project. “Based on a lifelong passion for these books and invaluable experiences working at Pixar & Blue Sky, I started Magnesium with friend and producer Matt Cushing to develop film & TV projects based on award winning sci-fi and fantasy literature. We are also very lucky to have advisors in our corner like producer Uri Singer, and RottenTomatoes founder Patrick Lee.” Of course it’s far from a done deal, but it’s still hella exciting in my opinion. I considered putting “potential” or something similar in the title, but that felt awfully pessimistic.

I looooved the concept art...but giggled at the description. It all sounded much faster paced and less episodic than the story, more action than mystery. Still, high hopes all around!
ETA: the description of the ether is accurate, if imho an unnecessary spoiler. If I were writing the description, I think I would have focused more on uncovering dark secrets and ancient lies, avoiding ensnarement in age-old rivalries, and her loyalties torn as war looms between the sinister machinations of the Court and the savage inhabitants of the forest. Something in that direction. Put war if you must, but it seems a lot more of a secrets and lies kind of story.

Also, SHE’S NOT ORPHANED. That’s kind of a big deal. It is, but I think the return of her father was such an upset to the whole trajectory of the comic that describing her as such leaves the viewer in a better mindset for that plot twist. That, or they didn't want a run-on-sentence.

Adell does have a bio on imdb. Assuming no funny business and everyone did their due diligence I think I will be cautiously optimistic. btw even if the option does get picked up that is not a guarantee that anything will happen.

If this does get off the ground, I’m psyched for Tom. But I do hope he has an ending in near enough sights, because, George R. R. Martin will tell you, these things catch up with you fast. It’s taken 15 years to get this far into the comic; I’m wondering if it’ll be 10 more before he nears a conclusion or if it’s so close (<5) that he feels safe making this option an actual consideration.

With those odds, I give it a 90% chance of being picked up by Netflix. Netflix does a good job sometimes with such material. "Hilda" is one example.

A pitch tells the basic premise and purpose of an idea for a TV show (or film) in order to attract producers to fund or develop a project. Loglines for the sake of pitching a project are similar to a TV guide description aimed at viewers, but more specific in describing the concept of the program, as it should be attractive enough for a person to know more (that is, to read the script) and informative enough to make it clear.

If this were to be a thing, I'd have 2 hopes: one is that Tom gets to maintain firm control over the story so that we don't end up in a situation where the adapted series departs hugely from the base material. I think GKC could do very well as an animated series... but I'd hope that they essentially use the existing comic as a story-board and don't screw with the plot and lore a bunch =/ The other thing is that they aren't lazy with the animation style.

:-P You 'avin' a giggle, mate? I'm also excited about this, but I wonder what kind of animation/art style would be used. For some reason I can't see the first few chapters translate to screen very well. But that's probably just me and my imagination that's lacking.

Among the obvious "I hope this happens because I've loved this comic for a long time", I selfishly want this to happen, if only for my voice agent to submit me for Coyote or Ysengrin...

Interesting news, although I am of the impression that Hollywood will option a ham sandwich. Just in case. I'm sorry, I've never formally introduced myself, my name is Mister Producer Man, and I represent Hollywoo Studios. Would you happen to know the agent of this Ham Sandwich person/object/story? I would love to talk to them about optioning it for a YA multimedia Universe. I'm just spitballing here, but we'd open with a trilogy, an anime and two live-action spinoffs in the same universe, with potential extra light novels and a comic book deal. But still... What animation style would you guys like to see this in? Gravity Falls? Steven Universe? Avatar: tla / tlok? Dragon Prince? FMA: Brotherhood? It's just so hard to imagine, with chapters just changing so much in tone! I hope Tom will do a small AMA or something once things are cleared out a bit more, I have so many questions! Will the story follow the webcomic closely? Because if it does, how long will episodes be? One chapter per episode? Won't we lose a lot of content in some chapters in that case? Or multiple episodes per chapter? in THIS case, will storylines become a bit more intersecting, because otherwise it might be too much of a change every few episodes. Aargh, okay, I have to stop myself. Even if this goes through, it'll take years before it goes live.

The first question that comes to mind is 'in what capacity?' - the next is, 'before or after Pixar turned from its initial platform of not sequel-izing its IP and got gobbled up?'
An option involving a green company with an unclear capacity to deliver is definitely a risky proposition, especially since apart from its founders, there are no other employees to turn to; until there's funding green light, they'll be running on an oily rag.

I'd describe it more as a School of Adventure that eventually morphs into a mystery. Though since the latter is a much more broadly applicable term and it describes something more akin to an emotion than a setting I don't disagree with you.

I mean, something like 2/3 of what happens in this comic is straight up just slice of life. Thread was a pretty big chapter despite the fact that not much happened in it besides Kat getting a girlfriend and some causing tension in her friendship with Annie. But there's a sense in which it is a little like a war story? I think of something like "Foil's War" here, where the war is very much the driving force of the narrative, despite the story being very pastoral and peaceful most of the time. Gunnerkrigg is fundamentally about "Those Two Weird Girls," but pretty much everything at some point goes back to the court and the forest and the tension between them.

Huh, interesting. This got me out of lurking for a bit.
I think that Gunnerkrigg would work best as a collection of more or less self-contained short series that made up a greater whole, like Infinity Train. There's an overarching plotline, but most chapters can still be made to make enough sense with only a basic introduction of the setting and characters. That way there wouldn't be as much sweat over whether the show will be cancelled after this or that season.

NOT ONLY DO WE GET TO SEE TOM'S STORYBOARDS FREAKING ANIMATED, OUR PRECIOUS WEBCOMIC ACTUALLY GETS TO REACH OUT TO THE WIDE AUDIENCES OF TV SERIES
I DON'T EVEN CARE THAT IT'S TOTALLY BRAND-NEW & UNCERTAIN PRODUCTION COMPANY, THIS IS HUGE YOU GUYS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *breath* AAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH (etc.)
