I wonder, is this some kind of reverse psychopomp? Or maybe an arbiter who needs to decide who will psychopomp Arthur when he eventually dies?

The wikipedia entry for Rangda is really interesting, these lines in particular: Also check out Barong - the ears aren't really Rangda's. It could be the former, or even a composite The entry for him is more focused on the dance that tells their story but it does mention that he plays a similar role in their mythology to a guardian angel. A composite would be in keeping of the themes of duality though, Barong and Rangda being two forces that must be kept in balance sits nicely (as wildspec). The other thing that drew my attention was that he is described as 'king of the spirits'. Perhaps Kat et al are going through the etheric equivalent of being called to the principal's office?

Rangda... Rangda Bangda???The only thing I'm wondering is what this entity is going to behave like. All dramatic and big-voiced? Or maybe more like "HEY YOU DID YOU JUST MAKE A SOUL? NEAT!" Or maybe this is like the etheric version of Clippy. "It looks like you're trying to create a fully fledged living being..." OKAY THAT IS QUITE ENOUGH THANK YOU

I'm leaning towards this idea myself. Perhaps he wants to show his new co-worker the ropes? It'd be pretty interesting if Kat got pulled away from Annie's business finding the pieces of Coyote because apparently there's a mandatory orientation for spiritual reincarnation.

One thing: This manifestation looks less like an entity and more like an architectural element so I'm going to tentatively say that she/they/it is either the one in charge of Diego's golem witchcraft (and maybe he incorporated something into his tomb enabling him to briefly make an appearance when someone who could carry on his work appeared and met certain conditions) or one responsible for making/destroying unnatural offspring in general.

Nope, it's the Balinese Rangda. Rangda Ning Dirah - the widow-queen of witches, and my childhood nightmare. She leads an army of baby-eating shape-shifting witches. Or it could be her nemesis Barong, which visually gets conflated often. I looked up Rangda Ning Dirah on google images and found this:

So, I was sort of right... Not quite an elder god stepping through the doorway, but an inner god turning the doorway into a manifestation of himself... I have a feeling that Kat's going to be officially dubbed a god now, and Annie her associated psychopomp. And since there's two Annies now, one of the Annies can go do the Psychopomping while the other can get on with more pressing matters.

OK, I like where the forum is going with the mythology. Definitely some Asian motifs going on there. Of course, I also see GREAT FLAMING EYEBROWS!

I like the psychopomp theory so given the obvious indonesian/balinese motif I'm gonna just link this Javan statue of Batara Kala's head Or maybe this is like the etheric version of Clippy. "It looks like you're trying to create a fully fledged living being..." "Stop! You've violated etheric law! Pay the gods a fine or serve your sentence
Your souless goods are now forfeit"

Superficially, it reminds me of some musical where the characters who don't need to be there for the next number don't get a spotlight.
Kinda sucks to be Juliette right now.

While Katerina sees a simplified reality. The library of the dead seemed like a massive Archaic library with many books to Antimony, and Reynardine. while Katerina saw only a small simple room with a table and book shelf. I'm guessing that Katerina is seeing the humanoid form of Batara Kala just suddenly walk out of the wall or appear. while Antimony, Courtannie and Reynardine are getting to see the cinematic feature we get to see. Katerina isn't going to be impressed or scared of lesser gods butting into her business.

You mean, there are strict rules for bringing souls into the material world just like there are for bringing them back to the Ether? ...Makes sense. Kat has seen actual mythical beings just like they were. Remember, she was horrified by Ketrak's appearance, and genuinely scared by Ankou.

Nah, if Kat had known she would evoke some eldritch god, she surely would have worn trousers. The others look like they're frozen in time, I think. It looks a bit different than Coyote's time stop, but that seems most likely Prediction: now is the time for Kat and Annies to get their official designations as Angel/Creator and Psychopomp. Why Rey is there, though, is less clear, unless it was just 'cos he was in proximity to the Important Players. Maybe he is to be the Psychopomp's ride... He never should have volunteered.

Kat *sees* etheric things, she is just immune to the "smoke and mirrors" and interprets everything in an analytical way. So she can see through the etheric mise-en-scene.
That guy must be some kind of soul gatekeeper or the master of psychopomps, showing up to scold her b/c she made "soul juice" flow against the usual traffic. So cue next page where she's seeing some middle-aged technocrat asian guy (since you guys said that demon is balinese) in a paper mask shaking a thunder sheet and going "oooooooooh!!"
Or maybe he'll just float some pop-up saying "Achievement Unlocked: create life and become a god" and bounce

Good eye, everyone. Looking around the internet I found this stone cast of Barong that looks pretty close, and also this Wiki article on Bhoma which is/are used to decorate temples. In the stone mode, Batara Kala looks similar, too. Chances are because of the tusks and ears that it's meant to be a boar or ogre god, so my bet is on Barong or Batara Kala. I think the tusks may be too short and the brows too happy for the "evil" Rangda. I could be wrong though, Tom's version is stylized too.

Ooooh, also, check THIS out! A carving a little like Tom's that serves as an entrance to a spirit-cave. Cool beans.

Katerina isn't going to be impressed or scared of lesser gods butting into her business. We have already seen Kat reacting to some being walking out of that hole. She found it hilariously funny before noticing the severity of the situation. So she might be seeing someone dressed up like that walking out of that same hole and being not very impressive. She might even ask what are they doing there and how did they got in her lab, then tell them to scram!Edit: For reference, the scram! scene from Annie's perspective. Also I found this

There are clear differences, but he reminds me of this thing, found in Elgamore’s office. We’ve never delved info why exactly, or how, Diego and Sir Young developed a rivalry and how it played out. *wildspec* Rather than this being relating to Diego, it actually relates to Sir young and the role of the dragon slayer in the court. www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=149

We’ve never delved info why exactly, or how, Diego and Sir Young developed a rivalry and how it played out. I wonder if it's related to Diego's blaming his treatment of Jeanne on Sir Young (cf. his deathbed scene) - a sort of "What have I - what has *he* done to you?" tone. (Those who've seen the old animated series "Gargoyles" - which has been mentioned here a couple of times - will get the last part.) He might have developed that tone even before his final day.

I wonder if Diego managed to trap this entity and the "new contract" is the girls have to release it in exchange for allowing Arthur to have a soul?

I think that's a Maori-inspired sculpture, like a Tikki statue, depicting the haka. Really masculine Eglamore-ish thing to have, imo.
