Long ago, the people of Gunnerkrigg Court lived in harmony, then one day, the Forest Nation attacked. Only Annie, master of the Ether, could stop them. But when the Court needed her most - she was replaced vanished.
100 days passed, and we discovered the real Annie. Though her fire skills are great, she has a long way to go to master the Ether. But I believe real!Annie can save the Court.
...
No, no one else saw the A:tLA reference with the finger-point skill?

Looking back at the comic a second time I think Court!Annie is supposed to be statuesque in the last panel as she confidently displays more skill with her powers than Forest!Annie. What I'm reading from that is that Court Annie is a lot LESS powerful than she should be and is using her power in a concentrated manner. As for why she's weak that could mean that she's the fake one, the split one made from a fragment of Annie's fire, that she didn't heal her emotional scars properly, or that her life force is decreasing for some reason. All current theories on her origin apply (I think) ...And I think that Forest Annie should step in and burn the thing to ashes while commanding the fire to not to burn anything else just to show off superior control of larger amounts of fire power (and then look back for a compliment from her dad just to find him shocked/disappointed, for drama reasons) It may well be the case that Court!Annie has less and/or diminishing mojo but I don't think that this page proves that, at least not yet. Like other people have posted, it would make sense that she would practice using the fire as efficiently as possible if her fire was waning but it could also be the result of training and practice over the last few months (especially if she's been training with her father). Where do you guys got so much information on Bound Dogs? I don't remember anything in the comic that sugested they were some kind of golem vehicle things The wiki could probably use a page on the Bound Dogs because the info's been dribbled out in tiny parcels in many places. Anja and Bob talk about them in the comic. There's also a little from the formspring archive, such as here, but the name wasn't known for most of that so use generic terms if you search.

My question about the Bound Dogs is: was the "bound" in this instance originally what the dogs did, or what had been done to them?
In the latter case, attacking the animated plants might kill the dogs - or just release them from the binding.

In the latter case, attacking the animated plants might kill the dogs - or just release them from the binding. I believe that was asked on formspring but never answered. It could refer to their construction as wood bound into the form of a dog, their jumping style of locomotion, how the Shadow Men are able and/or permitted to control them, something about Wood hierarchy or their area of operation, or something else entirely. It may just be a nickname that the Court adopted as a convenient label like the NATO designations for Russian vehicles, in which case it probably refers to how they move.

Annie! Even if you are Court!Annie, you should still feel like you're the Forest Medium! That means NO ZAPPING OF FOREST PUPPIES!! Maybe she resigned after Loup sent her back without an explanation? In any case, Annie has had no problem destroying animate objects she does not view as alive in the past. Did you forget This entire chapter?Zapping of forest creatures is the only way to show them who's boss! Never mind that it's not even a real animal in the first place. Although no-one present was also there when Anja found that out. I assume Donny told Tony all about their adventure later (by the way, I am still wondering which matters Tony had to attend to back then).

I am curious, i remember robot being controlled by shadow men when he came back from the forest, possibly through the tree arm. Would it be possible that bound dogs are piloted by shadow men too?
It should be noted that laser beams require probably more finesse and are likely more powerful due to concentration of energy than wild fire.

Would it be possible that bound dogs are piloted by shadow men too? Yeah. You can see them peeking out here and scattering after the dog is disabled here. It should be noted that laser beams require probably more finesse and are likely more powerful due to concentration of energy than wild fire. At more than four yards that beam either does a complete burn-through or causes a steam explosion at a point that should (going by what we've seen before) instantly disable it. We can't tell which without seeing if the other side of the hole is clean or not; we did see some probable shrapnel but there was no bang. Assuming the beam didn't do any damage to the maglev train on the far side of the target (which should be easy as the fire hasn't burned anything that Antimony didn't want it to in the past) that's pretty impressive compared to what Antimony's been capable of.

They're also super cool looking, though, so they kind of stuck in my mind.
I had totally forgotten they were made of roots, though! So I guess this is one threat that didn't come THROUGH Loup's roots...it's IS Loup's roots, just in a different form. And maybe piloted by some other creatures.

Unless you're not talking about lightning bending Things I learned today from Wikipedia: Scientists have been able to use fluorescent proteins derived from cells to create lasers. Here's the original study in Nature from 2011. I was wondering how Court Annie would ever have learned to focus her electromagnetic radiation / plasma (if that is what she produces) into lasers... (or how she produced it in the first place). When I found the article I squee'd. I remembered I was to be the boring one by pointing out that this isn't a laser but I totally forgot about it so here it is: This is not a laser! Lasers need to be phase aligned so they're single colors and certainly not white because white is a mix of multiple wavelengths (not until recently tho, material scientists breaking my argument by creating impossible lasers). Also Annie's "laser" is a mix of orangey fire and white so... maybe a very hot (white hot) blowtorch like thing but not a laser

Why do I think it is a laser and not, say, a 'fire shot' attack or a blowtorch? Because it goes ZAAA, which is a laser sound. Also, plenty of comics heroes who use lasers are portrayed will all color laser powers, which admittedly is not consistent with modern science, but then neither are tree dogs or talking shadows.

Since Annie's abilities come from her fire elemental ancestry, they'd belong to the magical/fantasy side rather than the science fictional side of "Gunnerkrigg Court". That would render "laser" (with its high-tech associations) less appropriate as a term for her powers.

On the contrary, from the focus on her gesture and the rather unusually surgical attacks, I'm assuming that Kat's been busy writing a few programs for Annie.

You're right! Silly me! Real world lasers would be really boring in comic world since you cannot see the actual beam, just the contact point (unless it's foggy) Edit: just seen the last page. So... not a laser

There's way too little info and way too many rabbit-holes starting with what the definition of a laser is and ending with a discussion of blooming and the notion that the beam/whip may just be visible because humans think something like that should be visible.

She's got access to the actual Giggleblade™ and she can just have Kat plug it in next to Diego's arrow. Then Kat can give all her friends and family Giggleblade™ powers just by giving them limited access to her system. [And then everybody can do magic tricks just like the Joker's.]

When Loup asked for the return of Coyote's gifts, he didn't ask for the Giggleblade. Which Coyote insisted that Annie not inform anyone in the forest about.
I don't think Loup knows of it. I suspect that Court!Annie doesn't have one.

I suspect that Court!Annie doesn't have one. And by that you're assuming that this is an entirely different timeline instead of just 6 months of difference. Otherwise why wouldn't she have it? Loup doesn't know because Coyote doesn't "remember" it. It's one of the memories that got sealed away in those gifts and it probably has the power to split a hybrid deity, and that's probably how Coyote and Ysengrin will make their comeback or ar least how Coyote intended it to go but it might go wrong and Loup might live on or they get killed off Anyway, I have just realized how resilient the shadow men are. Their only weakness is light, for not even the Giggling Blade could cut through Shadow2, instead lifting it (him?/her?) from the floor

Their only weakness is light, for not even the Giggling Blade could cut through Shadow2, instead lifting it (him?/her?) from the floor I've always thought of the CoyoteBlade as somewhat sentient with a mind of its own, kind of like Sauron's Ring--it fell the way it did and cut Shadow from the floor because it thought (having Coyote's sense of humor) that it would be funny, not necessarily because it couldn't cut a shadow man. I realize there's basically no evidence in-comic to support this view, though.

Their only weakness is light, for not even the Giggling Blade could cut through Shadow2, instead lifting it (him?/her?) from the floor I suggest that the Giggle-blade didn't cut Shadow 2 because either (1) it chose not to (having a small bit of sentience granted it by Coyote, since Coyote would not want to kill his own creations, the blade also chose not to) or (2) it is not a double edged knife and the side in contact with shadow 2 was the blunt edge. Probably (2).

Well, it really is hard to cut a shadow. Eglamore could do it with his vorpal blade: www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=118so I suspect the Giggle-blade could have cut it too, if it (1) wanted to, or (2) had landed differently. See above reply to nether dan.

Looking back at the page in question, it looks like the blade is cutty-side-up. It's also giggling though. Looking at it from a statistical standpoint the blade falling that exact way would be quite a freak accident (Mighty Eyebrows Boy is present though), so it isn't unreasonable to assume that the blade did whatever it thought would be the most amusing at the time (since it's Coyote's tooth, and that's what Coyote himself tends to do). Basically what Runningflame said. Probably also worth noting that the tooth came from the being that created the shadow people. If it could "cut the very earth," it could probably also un-create a living shadow if it was made to. (One more note, I think Eglamore's sword had only an indirect part in killing the shadow that possessed S13. In an environment already inundated with light, what's the difference of one more light source? The shadow was anchoring part of itself from the bridge's lights in the shadows cast by the robot's feet, and the impact from the sword lifted the robot off of the ground, leaving the shadow to dissolve away under the lights. Friendly Shadow needed something solid to escort him over the bridge for the same reason, sword or no sword)
