i wouldn't dream of involving myself in the war over ysengrin's and annie's marital suitability but i just always thought of renardine as more of a father figure to her.

Anyone else think her words ring a little hollow? She talks as if she knows him, but what she doesn't know about him could fill novels, and what Loup does know about him puts Annie's knowledge to shame.

I understand the empathetic "he's a sweet lad if you just get to know him" is emotionally gratifying, but this is the same Ysengrin who went into a blood rage to assault and kill Annie, murdered his own god upon receiving his strength, and had his thoughts and memories pillaged and collected by Coyote for years.

Thoughtful and reserved? He unabashedly talks of how humans should worship Coyote, and sees them as inferior.

His own thoughts and nobody else's? What was left in his mind after Coyote stole and abused him for ages? He was a shambling beast on a leash, the only ideas that he was allowed to have were ones that placated Coyote's machinations.

Delicate pride is the only component that makes sense, but that only scratches the surface of Ysengrin from what we've seen alone, and there's so much more lore that Annie seems... far too idealistic to be realistic.

You only say that because of your limited human view.

Well, let's see... father-like figures in Annie's life:

Tony Carver: tried to do soul-surgery on his daughter, with unknown intent, nearly killing her in the process.
Reynardine: tried to steal Antimony's body, which presumably would have killed her.
Coyote: has repeatedly manipulated things to create dangerous situations that could easily have killed her.
Muut: manipulated her into the highly dangerous situation of dealing with Jeanne.
Ysengrin: literally attacked her himself, and also unnecessarily took her into a fight with opponents who intended to kill her.
James Eglamore: um... seems to conflate her with Surma. Which is bad in several different ways simultaneously. But he hasn't tried to kill her.

Less likely candidates:

Donald Donlan: careful not to tread on what should be Tony's turf.
Jones, Anja Donlan: I said father figures.
Headmaster, other teachers: nearly invisible
Robot, Shadow: too emotionally young
Other robots: not around enough
Other psychopomps: ditto
Mort: seriously, there's such a shortage of good candidates that I'm listing a ghost who's gone? Too emotionally young. Oh, and gone.

To be fair to Annie, she might be focusing so much on Ysengrin's nobler side at present in order to bring that element back to the surface and counter Loup's qualities - the last vestige, perhaps, of her original plan before she discovered that Ysengrin was now Loup rather than Ysengrin.
