Eggs seems to be power-jumping at roughly right angles to this, across Ysote's line-of-sight. To attract/distract his attention? Is it Eglamore's time to die in battle, Parley's to take up the mantle of Court Protector, and Jones's to become Eglamore?

Whilst the court is being explored through the lens of the comic, has an e1 shown up? Who's up for an "Easter egg" hunt? I'm on the hunt. Okay, I've browsed through what feels like the entire comic. One of the abandoned warehouses is called S113. That's the only building we're seen given a code or address; the rest of them just have the Court "taurus" logo on the front and have general names like "the ether collection station", "the train station", etc. Even Kat's workshop doesn't have a number when seen from the outside. It has an address, but it's never seen.

Which could fit with the E1 as a chess metaphor as well because that original model could be considered the King like how S1 would have been called the Seraph.

I'm excited to hear what Rey thinks of this. He's spent a lot of time with Coyote and Ys and likely knows them better than anyone else in the court. It's somewhat of a relief to hear that he was expecting this to happen at some point.
And yeah the court's complacency for all this is . . . odd. They really don't think much of the forest. Either that, or they have some sort of secret, catastrophic weapon in the wings? It wouldn't surprise me either way.

Even Kat's workshop doesn't have a number when seen from the outside. It has an address, but it's never seen. This is interesting. I only just now noticed that Anja's voice seems to shake a little when she gives Kat the key. She starts out calmly enough, but then her voice catches a little on the "th... the address". No idea what it means, or whether it means anything at all, but... hmmmm.

Surprise, it's not a surprise. That's also when we have to remember how Renard politely refused all and any offers involving his return to the Wood. 2. ... ♞ e1

In an early appearance of the maglev there is a G on a sign. We do also see a standard-looking transit map on the next panel. Both things are probably irrelevant but that may mean "line G" or "stop G" but it could mean "ground level." "1" as a stop is typically the first stop on the route from center downtown so "E1" could be route E stop 1 where an important building or three would probably be. (shrug)

Is it Eglamore's time to die in battle, Parley's to take up the mantle of Court Protector, and Jones's to become Eglamore? Possibly, but I hope not! Parley is probably not fully trained yet. Jones is unlikely to become Eggs, since she "doesn't take sides" in the flow of human history. But I suppose its not out of the question: losing Eggs would not derail any major plot line, and he is setup as sort of a noble, flawed character... perfect for the (ulp!) chopping block of prose...

Rey is probably at least partially aware of Coyote's abuse of Ysengrin. He is also probably aware that Coyote has been experimenting with giving his powers to Ys, and he can probably guess (if he didn't already know) what power Ys would be most interested in. All in all, if you've known both Coyote and Ysengrin for centuries, as Reynard has, the events of this chapter probably aren't too surprising.

I think philman meant for Jones to take on Eglamore's name, like she took on Mr. Jones' name when he died.

I just realized something. Reynardine has been caught into a wolf plushie and since then, likes to present himself as a wolf, to the great displeasure of Ysengrin. Now Ysengrin present many of Coyote's body features after having eaten him.
Could that mean that, assuming Coyote's spirit/essence is still alive (and he has many horcruxes out there, at least two that we know of), he will take refuge into Rey's preserved body ?...
And if so, it will become really confusing... but maybe that's the true strength of Coyote : since he doesn't exist, he can't die, for it would have to mean that nobody believes in him anymore.
And another point here, brought to my attention by someone else's message above : if there are robot's classes named Seraph, and Kat is considered an angel of some sort, and the Court is playing to God, then we must have something along the line of guardian angels and other stuff like that. Well, pretty sure it has been mentioned before me. Sorry for the text block.

After making my earlier post about Coyote's promise to leave the Court alone, I reread the mention of that in "Fire Spike", and found on the page immediately afterwards: www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=793The first two panels seem much more ominous after the events of the last several pages.

Oh, and forgive me for this piece of silliness at such a serious moment in the story, but the talk about possible casualties in the coming confrontation did give me a vision for one possible scene.
"The Court's been saved from Ysengrin, and thankfully, without any losses."
"Actually, sir, Boxbot was smashed to pieces."
"As I said, without any losses."

On Renard:
I agree that Renard expected Ysengrim to do this, or he expected Coyote would give Y too much power and trigger it. But also, this is what Coyote planned, maybe not getting eaten, but he wanted Ysengrim to cross the water and attack the court. And all those memories of saying he would being carefully stored inside Coyote? I still think we are inside Coyote's plan. I don't think Renard knew all of it, but when Coyote gave Renard his power Renard went and messed up the court. This is what Coyote does, Renard is not surprised.
Also, Renard is not impressed. There is one reason he stayed at the court, and one thing he has shown he will fight for and risk his life for, and that is Annie. When Renard thinks Annie is in danger, he will act. He doesn't care about buildings or the court, so at this point Annie is not in danger in Renard's mind.
On Parley:
Yes, E1 is the White King, I assume that is the Headmaster because the code involves Eglamore. Which means this fight is going to the top. No way Parley sits this out. And I really hope Jean gets brought up. So much potential there. Also Smitty just went there, so Parely and Smitty and the Court are together.
And there's robots and Jonesy too. What programming do the robots have, and is Jones going to protect James? So much awesomeness awaits.

Is it the headmaster though? Things like the first 'panel' on this page give off a real 'wizard of oz' vibe, I can't help but wonder if there is anyone behind the curtain we haven't seen yet. Eggers himself implies they definitely don't show everyone everything, as does Jones.

Eggers himself implies they definitely don't show everyone everything, as does Jones. and that first panel says "Lord S of the Court" - plural! - implying some ruling body/committee... I think the Headmaster may well be a high officer of the court, maybe even one of the Lords, but there is a whole gaggle of them behind the curtain, apparently.

A thought I had, inspired by the mention in "Fire Spike" of Coyote's promise to leave the Court alone. Could Coyote have been an even bigger reason for why the forest-folk hadn't launched a full-out attack on the Court than Jeanne?
While Coyote apparently only promised for himself, he was thereby placing the Court under his protection, giving his approval of its being there. Consequently, in the forest-folk's eyes, any attempt to attack the Court could mean facing Coyote's disapproval - something definitely not to be taken lightly. We know they've made some attacks along the Annan Waters (judging from all the people Jeanne killed), but those could have been done in secret (or at least, that's what they thought - the evidence suggests that Coyote knew about those, even if the forest-folk who dared Jeanne assumed he didn't).
It would certainly explain why Ysengrin's army never tried to storm the bridge (which was in plain view, unlike the route across the Annan Waters that Jeanne was guarding, at the bottom of a deep ravine). They could have countered the lamps by simply giving the shadow-folk rides inside their shadows, as with Robot (both in Chapter One and when he was possessed in Chapter Seven); there's no indication that the lamps would have similarly kept Ysengrin's army out. (Of course, the idea might not have occurred to anyone in the forest-folk until Robot crossed the bridge). But if they interpreted Coyote's promise to the Court as a form of protection, they wouldn't have dared, knowing that they'd never be able to hide such an open assault from him, and could be facing a bapping. They could go on resenting the Court's presence, maybe make sneak attacks across the river, but that was the most they could do, as long as Coyote's word was in force.
