In light of the character development in the current chapter, I think a discussion of Rey's relationship with Annie is called for.
What do you think that relationship is?
Is it father-daughter? Is it animal and trainer? Does he have feelings for her? Is he just dieing to escape? Is he trying to plant discord? What do you think?

Well, it appears this particular topic is a little taboo. 70 Views and no replies so far.
I hold the opinion that we don't know enough to cast a decision that doesn't depend on guesswork, but with that said...
Speaking of Reynardine's motivations, I don't believe there's a father-daughter relationship. The mechanics of their relationship would have to change a lot for me to believe Reynardine has paternal feelings towards Annie. Sure he has shown some concern, but we have also seen that he is ready to be rude and lewd to her in ways that don't fit the role of someone that sees the girl as a foster daughter figure. Besides that it would mess the aspect of Annie as an "orphan" in the court.
Anyway. Reynardine and Annie are still getting to know each other. As we have seen Reynardine is more than secretive about his past and in return Annie doesn't share much with Rey. At this point they don't look like close friends, even less like their relationship can be defined as something more.

Yeah, I agree there's nowhere near enough information to be certain of Annie and Rey's relationship.
My suspicion is that, while Rey's behavior has shaped up a bit and he has grown to respect Annie somewhat as the alpha wolf, he's still ultimately looking out for his own skin. I think if he genuinely cared for Annie, he would have apologized for trying to kill her.
Assuming that Annie's objection to handing Rey over to Eggers in Ch 7 was sincere, it seems that Annie does care somewhat for Rey's well-being. But I do wonder how much of her concern for Rey is due to her curiosity about his past with Surma.

There is also to take into consideration that he has done things for her that he didn't need to and she didn't order him to do. For instance their misadventures mostly dealing with robots, Rey didn't have to give her a ride back, but he did and she never asked or ordered him to. He also on different occasions has protected her and been openly concern for Antimony, though it's difficult whether he was sincere. Though it is could be because Annie looks so much like Surma, and he did seem genuinely griefed when he realized she was dead... It is possible, since Eglamore has done it too. ( annie seems to suffer mistaken identity alot ) See Chapter 7 page 23, www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=120Though Annie's affections or caring for Rey can be questioned, since she is curious about her mother's past and has learned more about her from other people than from her own parents.

Yeah, Reynardine was presented as affected by the idea that Surma had died but that didn't stop him from, shortly after that, trying to use Annie as an escape pod.
That raises the possibility that his current interest for Annie may be him projecting the feelings he had for Surma, whatever those may have been, but that he was too desperate at the time.
Still, I would rather believe that rather than think of Annie as Surma 2.0 our resident demon sees Annie as Annie. That his concern is more influenced by his short time of knowing her (and whatever plan he has) rather than just what happened over a decade ago. Even if the similarities between mother and daughter are a small factor.

I think Rey is lone-wolf (haha) that is puzzled because someone shows some concern for him, she wouldn't for example, let Eglamore took him away even when he tried to posses her; so he kinda of jumps from being someone grateful to be shown a helping and caring hand... and being a "Grade A jerkface"
[that might be true for Rey-Surma relationship as well]
Annie is actually more difficult... some childhood feelings associated with the toy? Still wanna know the link bewteen Rey and Surma? Some appreciation for what Rey has done for her?
